Buggered if I know how we got through Covid without massive debt. I don't care who was in government.

My first home loan was when Keating was treasurer. 15.5% and I thought that was good! Oldies were in business, I worked for them. Business overdraft was 21%. Guys on building sites were going on strike for days because the wrong flavoured ice cream wasn`t available. Construction sites were downing tools all the time for petty things and walking off building sites. One high rise site in Scarborough where I lived at the time got bombed because the builder was arcing up against the unions for stopping work all the time. They went broke. I was in charge of quoting for jobs in the building industry. Union job..... Work out the normal price, then double it and add on another 15% and hoped like fuck if we got the job we still made money out of it. Builders labourer's were on an obscene amount of money with no qualifications.
The Hawke/Keating government did some good things but they were far from the pillars of parliamentarians. Would love to know how much money flowed through the unions then. Painters and dockers were beauties. Every year just before Christmas go on strike. Then the breweries would go on strike because they knew everyone wanted beers for Christmas. Held everyone to ransom for more coin.

Yep summed up pretty good

You are fighting a regard action there Indo but fact is the last 3 terms have been very ordinary policy wise and the corruption wont look great in front of a royal commission.

Oxrox the ice-cream rumour thing was a north west iron ore mine site which was actually some thing that came up during wage negotiations that got made into legend by the right propagandists nothing to do with construction not to mention it was BS.

As for unions men died on construction sites (worked on a couple deaths were budgeted for) before they (unions) forced governments to enforce better safety standards that's a fact not rumour.

Albo dodged most questions. Agree minimum wages should be lifted. Agree wage shafting by business should be illegal. That was it. Mentioned penalty rates. Bet the hospitality businesses who have been doing it so tough during covid are jumping for joy about a potential reintroduction of penalty rates. That's what I don't get. Small business just cant afford that.
That's why tax cuts make more sense to me. If you want to get ahead work more to earn more dollars but don't get slammed by tax. Look after the people at the lower end of the spectrum with higher minimum wage but also look after the people who want to get ahead by working more without being penalised. There's a lot of work out there.
I have Labour as state government in WA and think they've done a good job. Just cant come to grips with Federal Labour. In fact, I think it would be bad for WA. If they come up with some good policies between now and the election I may change my mind. Dont like Albo really but don't give a shit who leads it's all about what the party will do not who the front man is.

hate to disclose my boring life, but I just watched parliment question time, for the first time in a long time... at a time, from my perspective, when labor should have morrison and his corrupt government on the ropes...

what I saw was the absolute opposite, morrison and co. just tore strips off labor, time and time again, question after question... every time...

my immediate thoughts after... labor don't have a hope... they are totally impotent, with no purpose, and nothing to offer... an empty vessel of a party, topping out with bland career politicians, who have no clue of the real world and what is important to real people...

they desperately need to stock the ranks with some old school union officials who have actually done a days work, a few tough guys with fire in belly that can actually attempt to answer to scomo's taunts...

now I know that's the labor party of the past, and I may be over romanticising (hello guy), but that doesn't change the fact that this is what labor oh so desperately needs... so, I would settle for some quick witted nurse union dude/dudettes, or a smart arse doctor or two, who have all actually spent some time actually working amongst normal society...

I never ever use these terms, so excuse me, but contemporary labor are a bunch of pussies. pussies and b grade beta males who appear to have compromised the real self so much to fit into contemporary professional society there is literally nothing left, the tank is empty, the fire is gone, the 'ticker' has tocked...

there's some great women there though, but not one of them stepped up today... perhaps they're in damage control... but tbh, they don't really seem to have morrison's measure either...

morrison is a trainwreck, an aspergers ad guy idiot, that should have never made it past middle management. a shameless compulsive liar that doesn't really represent australia, even with his laughable manufactured contrived caricature...

his own troops have called him a hypocritical, lying sociopath... a horrible person ffs!!

yet labor just seem to get no traction against him and his party at all

his party has no vision, they squandered the biggest money print in history, they filled their mates pockets with money 'legitimately', and seem to be steeped in under the table corruption too. they are hands off morons, who just seem to go a minimalist damage control MO to a litany of disasters that should have been catalysts for real change

yet labor seems to offer no alternative whatsoever...

what the hell is going on??!!

Hard when any questions asked by Labor are ignored and the speaker allows Morrison etc go on rants not related to question. If they spark up as you suggest and get a bit of mongrel in them they are expelled from chamber.
Parliament needs a speaker who is party neutral, a judge or someone similar who holds members from both sides to account.
Question time as is really is a waste of time. Dorothy Dixers asked by backbenchers allowing govt members to give their rehearsed answer, and questions from opposition never being answered or ignored.

Last election they went in with costed, detailed and in the most cases good policies. Scomo had daggy dad and how good is it. With help from Palmer who still hasn't paid his Qld workers, but can find $80 million to help LNP attack Shorten and Labor. Although I agree with your sentiments, from a strategic point of view, maybe and I mean maybe (not convinced) that Labor and Albo going into the election as small a target as possible may be best strategy. Murdoch and msm would just be looking for anything to attack them, so give them nothing.
Hopefully if (big if) they get in they can go hard and bring in policies that help Australians and turn around some of the crap the LNP have done. Aged Care reform would be good start.
Also hopefully a proper ICAC that nails some of the blatant corruption taking place with LNP and their mates. If some Labor members go down also, so he it. Maybe this will need to be forced upon them by cross bench. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
If Morrison wins another term, I think the Australia which was meant to be fair and egalitarian I grew up in will definitely be lost forever.

Independents are rocking the boat. An exciting time in politics if we can look ahead. Ruffling a few feathers is good for change. Independents aren't the whole anserw, but we have only just started to look at representation differently in Australia. Big parties have had to take note. Not perfect but it's a start. Forcing them to address whats outside their political bubble. The only way to influence the two major parties dominance and change action. Take a risk. Look a little deeper at those eligible of representation if you can. Exciting times amongst the turmoil of uncertainty.

I actually liked watching last nights budget response from Albo . He may not have given all the details but I’m sure more will be revealed in the coming weeks. What I loved was watching smirko having to sit there and not be able to shout, scream, point and pull faces , he just had to be silent and cop it . The beetroot kept looking over his shoulder when the gallery applauded, as if to say shut the fuck up , or was he looking for a waiter to bring him a drink ? Friedburger looked as if his head was going to pop at any minute and was giving the full death stare . Overall the LNP were squirming in their seats and know the gig is up and ICAC is coming. Going to be a nasty 6-7 weeks and more scandals to be exposed is my prediction.

In summary, last time Labor went in as Labor with Labor policies and lost.

This time they are going in as Liberal lite, with policy very similar to LNP and will most likely win doing so

I guess Liberal lite is better than Labor though.

but labor is in no better position, who the hell would they replace uncle elmer with?

...i can think of a few who would be vast improvements, but all still incredibly mediocre and uninspiring at the same time...

I honestly don't undrstand what's the problem with contemporay politics and finding good leaders, the US and oz have been an exercise in the unbelievsble to the underwhelming for about ten years or more

you'd think some good talent would choose itself... quite often it seems to be more like everyone takes a step back, leaving some poor unaware sucker as the nominee

"...but boy it’s gunna be one massive shit fight after the expected landslide loss - all ALP/DLP like.

Get your popcorn early!"

boy there's gonna be some devastated, deranged loonies screaming at sky if this doesn't come to fruition...

very unlikely from my petspective, but there's a little bit of me that hopes roadkill is actually correct, it'll be hilarious...

Fraudenberg and Dutton have to re-elected yet. Both at serious risk of getting the electoral boot.

Riddle me who will lead the libs in that case? Cash? Wilson? ??????

So the LNP claim to be good money managers https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-04-01/cancelled-french-submarine-progra... aged care could have used some of that money.

@ Sypkan

Scomo is easily the LNP's current best bet, and if you look at the last 6 months prefer PM polls even when Labor caught up to LNP on the polls and overtook them as preferred party, Scomo still retained his position as preferred PM for some time, obviously not the case anymore but really its probably got as much to do with good marketing by Albo of himself in the last few months as much as Scomo's popularity dropping.

If it had happened the other way and Scomo fell behind in preferred PM polls first and then Labor caught up in preferred party polls, then yeah you might have a point.

BTW. Dont get too excited Guy not long Labor looked totally unelectable and without any realistic leader, LNP have plenty of time to reset, and with inflation and rising interest rates, by the time next election comes around things wont be looking good for Labor, it could even be a one term government.
