Eastern Tasmania Surf Forecast by Guy Dixon (issued Monday 8th February)

Best Days: No great days until next week.

Recap:

The morning sessions were easily the pick of the bunch under light offshore breezes, before a northeasterly seabreeze came in from mid morning on Saturday and Sunday. As for surf, most beaches picked up options in the 1-2ft range on Saturday, slightly larger on Sunday in the 2ft range, easing once again today to the 1-2ft range.

This week (Tuesday 9th - Friday 12th):

Small amounts of easterly energy are expected to fill in off the back of a Tasman low on Tuesday, with open beaches picking up options in the 1ft+ range. A modest easterly fetch off eastern quadrants of a slight intensification should maintain hints of swell in the 1ft range throughout Wednesday, fading into Thursday.

Meanwhile, frontal progressions have been working on the Southern Ocean over the past few days, although the alignment of their fetches have been less than ideal. A southerly groundswell is expected to move up the coast on Tuesday afternoon, although the westerly element of this swell means that only the most exposed south swell magnets should see energy off this system with options in the 1-2ft range.

Light variable breezes are in order fro the early session on Tuesday, before increasing from the north later. Wednesday looks to be under light variable breezes for a good part of the morning, tending light southeasterly from the afternoon.

Similarly, Wednesday is looking at light winds early, before a southerly breeze increases and tend southeasterly.

The remaining swell windows otherwise looks to remain fairly quiet, or at least not favourable for Tasmania until the end of the week, with the exception of a local easterly fetch, tending northerly into the end of the week and weekend.

This weekend (Saturday 13th - Sunday 14th):

The aforementioned windswell is only looking modest due to the moderate wind strengths, short fetch length and duration.

As a result, Saturday should build to the 1-2ft, with a secondary pulse coming in the days after as the fetch increases and extends northward towards the South Coast of NSW.

Open beaches should see fun peaks in the 1-2ft+ range on Sunday, timed well with a northwesterly breeze dominating the coast on both days.

Next week (Monday 15th onward):

Next week holds much better opportunities for a wave with long range east/northeasterly energy filling in from a developing tropical low/cyclone. Monday is expected to see the very long period fore runners, but without much size. The bulk of the size is due to fill in throughout Tuesday where open beaches have the potential to pick up very inconsistent sets in the 3-4ft range.
