COVID-19 Health System Overload Forecaster
gsco wrote:It seems that the main cultish, braindead, zombie-like behaviour that is occurring right now (and there's a lot of it...) is when people are feeling unwell, instead of curling up nice and warm on the couch, watching their favourite movies and ordering their partner around to wait on them hand and foot, they are actually going out and standing in line for hrs or camping out in their cars for more than 24hrs, etc, in order to get a covid test.
I've seen cars line up for 10s of miles down the street around the corner from my house waiting to get into the drive-through testing clinic. What the hell are these people doing out there?
Isn't this is the absolute worst thing a person can do? Isn't this just going to spread the virus even more if you've got it, significantly increase the risk of getting it if you don't already have it, and make you even more sick if you're already sick from whatever, virus or not?
I must be really stupid but how did the population of Australia get brainwashed into this kind of behaviour? There seems to be something going very wrong here.
Isn't the wisest decision making process to stay indoors and rest up, if you start to feel really unwell go to hospital, if you are too unwell and don't have anyone to take you into hospital then call an ambulance?
yep, some pretty strange behaviour, totally nonsensical and counterproductive, dangerous even...

clowns like vicmoron, that's how...
We were sold a pathway out of a control model stuck in a lockdown only approach and a no win situation for leaders in the face of the public fear and risk aversion and reality of a health system that could be easily overloaded. Remember Italy in the early days?
We were sold an expensive VW beetle - not a Porshe, nor a lemon. But at least it got us out of the driveway and moving again.
It gave experts and politicians a plausible pathway that sort of works.

They did their job.
The vaccine didn't suppress it the draconian lockdowns did.

I’ll have to dispute that, there were the worlds longest lockdowns while this was happening. There is so much info on outbreaks in fully vaccinated people with Delta.
I even shared an article the other day with experts saying that the vaccine was never designed to stop transmission and we all know the vaccine was developed even before delta.
Lastly, we still have premiers saying get vaccinated to protect your loved ones and the NT premier locking down unvaccinated people right now.

What do you think is happening now Craig? Omicron is a vaccine escape variant or maybe the vaccines wane quite quickly?

We ain’t moving, look at the absolute cluster fuck happening right now. You’ve been given a car that only goes on direction and that’s straight to ER when you have a runny nose from all the fear surrounding this virus.
Most people are so fucking scared of a sneeze and it’s due to the government and media needing to sell you a lemon
A virus so deadly you have to be tested to see if you have it, a virus so deadly that the government are now saying stay home and get a thermometer with Panadols.

Seeing as the vaccines were created for the initial virus, they did well against the Delta variant but seem to be way less effective for Omicron. Add in the much greater transmissivity of the virus regardless of vaccines etc and that's why it's spreading like wild fire. IMO.
That is not opinion, Craig. That is fact.

I’m not saying I know whether or not that fella caught it at the cricket but both the timeframe and the double vaccinated giving it to the double vaccinated are entirely possible. 1 day incubation not unheard of.
From the article:
“According to the Australian Department of Health, the incubation period for COVID-19 can range between one and 14 days, with most cases displaying symptoms by day 5 or 6 after exposure.
However, research into the Omicron variant, which is still in its early stages, suggests people exposed to the new strain will develop symptoms or return a positive test sooner. “

what would be interesting to know is, if ol' mate got vaccinated the week or two before the test just so he could attend...
as tbb has convincingly shown, and is well known but not widely reported... that people are vulnerable to infection just after being vaccinated
the vaccines are actually only effective 2 or 3 weeks after getting them, and actually make people more susceptible to infection for that first couple of weeks
I've thought about this quite a bit, because all the advice tells crew to rush out and get vaccinated whenever there is an approaching event - be it recreational or a virus surge - and in some regards this is the dumbest thing to do...
it's a difficult one, as governments can only control so much messaging, but i think if some of the messaging was more honest people would possibly plan a bit more ahead... rather than getting vaxxed the week before the test, doing the mandatory rushed off your feet before a few days off work, lack of sleep, beers at the cricket, standing in baking sun... surrounded by thousands of people that have done the same... you may as well go and lick the urinal too...

We’re getting more and more reports of friends, neighbours and family getting infected with COVID. Many can’t be confirmed because there’s no PCR testing (people being turned away at 8am because centres are at capacity) or no RATs available. So they’re just waiting it out.
Someone above (syppo?) questioned the logic of being out and about to get tested if potentially infected. I agree with this. People need to take some personal and collective responsibility to prevent the spread by not going out if they think they’ve got it.
A close friend yesterday (from GC) said the family had mild ‘classic’ symptoms, no way to confirm, so just isolating at home for a week or until he can get some hands on RATs without driving all over town.

And here is the problem , when people get a cold or flu they still front up for work and spread it around the workplace. So if someone is feeling mild symptoms and can’t get a test , then many simply don’t give a fuck and a days pay is more important. Some people have had it really hard financially so it’s understandable . A surgical or cloth mask is going to do jack shit against omicron and if you have a N95 then make sure it’s fitted properly. Next few weeks is going to be hard on the elderly and vulnerable and hopefully it peaks and things get better from there .
Robo so what? The big numbers are clear:
Forbes Jan 6, 22:
KEY FACTS
The CDC study looked at more than 1.2 million fully vaccinated adults across hundreds of U.S. healthcare facilities between December 2020 and last October: Some 2,246 of them caught Covid-19 after getting vaccinated, and 189 faced a severe outcome like acute respiratory failure or ICU admission, including 36 who died.
Vaccinated people ages 65 and older are 3.22 times more likely to face a severe Covid-19 outcome than others, and the immunosuppressed and people with underlying health issues — including pulmonary disease, cardiac disease, chronic kidney disease, liver disease, neurologic disease or diabetes — also faced a higher risk.
All 189 patients with severe outcomes had at least one risk factor like age or an underlying health condition, and 78% of those who died had four or more risk factors.
Vaccinated people who previously caught Covid-19 were less likely to develop a severe outcome, and no one who took monoclonal antibodies faced severe cases.
The findings line up with a CDC study from September that found Covid-19 vaccines were 95% effective at stopping hospitalizations in adults 18 to 64 but just 80% effective for seniors, and a peer-reviewed December study that found vaccines waned in effectiveness for seniors after the coronavirus’ delta variant took root.

They did their job.
What do you think is happening now Craig? Omicron is a vaccine escape variant or maybe the vaccines wane quite quickly?
Matilda noticed no one had responded to this. Given how heavily mutated the omicron is compared to the original virus (and other variants) it is almost certainly that it is an escape variant as you called it.
There has been some evidence to show vaccine efficacy wanes over time (more rapidly compared to other vaccines, many of which last a lifetime or only require a booster every 10 years) but the situation keeps changing to really know by just how much.
Seems the vaccines do sweet FA to prevent transmission of omicron (could be wrong though) but time will tell how effective they are regarding hospitalisation and death. One would expect there to be quite a big reduction in severe illness Vax compared to unvax. Fortunate that it is less intense than the big D but.
Given the big 3 vaccines are proven safe and billions of doses have been administered, seems crazy to me why you wouldn't roll up your sleeves especially in a pre-omicron context where the reduction in severe illness was estimated to be 93% (perhaps less important with the latest variant).
Cousins fiancée back in the uk under 30 years old with no underlying health conditions ended up in hospital for 10 days in seriously bad shape with omicron. He was unvaccinated. Just anecdotal I understand and there have been records of severe cases in vaxxed too. Not sure whether or not his position has changed on vaccination since.

The clinical results of the vaccines claim exactly the same thing I do. They say that the vaccine may, in best case scenarios, reduce the chance of severe covid and death by < 90%. When you consider that healthy young Australians already have a 99.994%chance of avoiding serious illness and death then the vaccine only takes their chances to 99.998% .
That’s how it works Bloke. That’s the facts, that’s the science.
Of course not everyone under 60 is healthy and so they’re chances of avoiding severe illness might go from 98% to 99%. That’s why vaccines should be available for those who need and want them but mandated vaccination for everyone……get fucked.
And I’m called an anti-vaxxer for thinking this way. There’s your real FFS moment bloke.

It's ripping into QLD. No stopping it now.

Lucky Queensland had that border shut for 6 months! Think of all the hardship, heartbreak and tragedy those border closures managed to inflict upon innocent Australians in that time. The politicisation of covid ……it just gave us so much didn’t it!

100% tear the border down, it’s done absolutely nothing but cause heart ache and traffic jams in cooly.

So don’t you think it’s absolute madness that premiers and experts are still promoting to get vaccinated to protect the community?
RK glad you think the border should not be there to QLD it’s nothing more than a political stunt now and apparently not going until QLD reaches 90% for a vaccine that does now not work.
vaccines protect the individual and also the community. fact.
vaccines do work. fact. For a healthy person under 50 the vaccine reduces the absolute chance of severe illness from covid by < 0.005% and diminishes rapidly with youthfulness.
Fact.
For Australians younger than 60 the survival rate is 99.9% minimum.
Fact.
Where the fck do you pull these stats from Blowin? And your last statement can NEVER be proven correct because 90% of the population is now vaccinated so you will never know if your wonderfully referenced factual information above is ever correct. You enjoy Blowin smoke out of your arse don't you!!!
I know where blowin the bullshit artist pulls his figures from don weather.
I will give you a hint. The correct answer starts with A, has 4 letters in it and ends in E.

Of course it can. There’s several million Australians who aren’t vaccinated as your control group Don.
There must be hundreds of thousands of them getting severe covid now right? Lol. The only healthy young person to sadly pass away was double vaccinated. Though I wouldn’t be surprised if he was found by the coroner to have an unrecognised underlying condition such as a heart issue. Poor bugger.
Don….you should give thinking a go bloke. Blind panic doesn’t seem to be doing you any favours.

Cool story bro.
Too bad I just put up a graphic from the Australian Government which backed up my statement.
Hey bloke…..shouldn’t you be trying to incite panic so you can get your hands on more sweet taxpayer cash handout contributions from your fellow Australians?
Remember yesterday when you said the Surf Coast was a CATASTROPHE so you could hope for a state of emergency declaration and you could start to resume milking your fellow Australians dry to the tune of tens of thousands of dollars?
Grift on bloke. Grift on!
I've created a spreadsheet forecast which I'll update as we go..
