Interesting stuff
Optimist, it works hey, check the vid on fasting I linked on this thread about a week ago if your interested
Andy, "“We are likely to see multiple waves,” said Professor Catherine Bennett, chair in epidemiology at Deakin University.
In the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic, communities that dealt best with the first wave of deaths tended to see larger second waves.
Exactly, but we’ve got nothing left in the tank, either has half the world, unless you subscribe to throwing childrens futures under the bus to protect ourselves, again
We’ve started this marathon with a sprint
Wide ranging article on ABC today, gives cursory attention to many aspects of the currect crisis but still worth a read:
https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-04-06/is-capitalism-dying-or-just-in-isolation-coronavirus/12123874
Good read Stu, I still believe that Scott and Josh are the men for the hour. Its a hard look at ourselves all round and hopefully humility will prevail.
Optimist great thing to do with posting some health tips...but I got as far as no coffee...something inside me died, and the rest was just blah blah blah
Stu would like to hear your thoughts on that article, and what will happen post covid. Have been really interested watching how far left policies have had to go to manage this...economically speaking, not the behaviour control side.
I am naive but I don't think there is much of a genuine appetite for military war amongst world leaders...a ramping up of current methods of conflict definitely, but I wouldn't bet on a full scale military conflict
"Is capitalism dying or just in isolation during the coronavirus pandemic?"
Well you would want to hope not, because all this money being thrown around will have to be paid back one day, and if it continued as we know eventually runs out.
If anything the lesson from this taster of communism/socialism should be capitalism isn't that bad at all.
I don't see it that way Indo, respectfully, more the opposite...is fascinating how our own personal natural biases can completely change our perspective on most anything
Hells Bells, Pells free!
T'was a Lindy Chamberlain like witch hunt from the outset.
capitailsm definitely dying, but its a slow, suffering, miserable death... still got decades in it I reckon. and what a long, miserable, decades of undoing its gonna be...
I think scumo's been alright the last week or so, much more decisive, clear, and forthcoming. but I reckon he's totally fucked up this stimulus package. I find it kinda funny how easy the keynesians were all bought off with a big cash splash
everything scumo has done is big spending, overly generous, and temporary. he's made a point of this, everything is retractable. everything is withdrawable, a bunch of desperate efforts to get us through tough times, ...."a bridge to the other side'...
everything done is a massive lost opportunity to restructure our economy how it needs to be into the future. our current capitalism model was already on the ropes, the virus thingy just reinforced the bleeding obvious...
scumo has totally missed a true 'nation building' opportunity to restructure australia with the tools we'll require for the much more independent sparse future we're heading into
a brigde to nowhere from scumo
a wishful brigde to a status quo long gone
I got to agree with you there Syppo.
it is a bridge to nowhere.
I reckon Scummo will hit the afterburners as soon as he can too get us back on the track we were on before.
Well written sypkan, I would say I agree, but that kind of falsely implies that you said what I already thought. I'm not that intelligent
A lot probably depends on how long this not-a-lockdown-no-sir goes on for.
If we're taking the "sit tight and wait it out until there's a vaccine" approach, it could be a bloody long time. Might not be possible to go back to the old status quo by then, if the damage is bad enough.
"I reckon Scummo will hit the afterburners as soon as he can too get us back on the track we were on before."
yep, they've already hinted at it
got a few 'last blasts' to go yet... and, ... what a long, miserable, decades of undoing its gonna be...

and yep, there'll be nothing left by the time they change tact. I dunno if its denial, or the massive misinformation that is contenporary media, but a vaccine is 12-18 months away minimum by many accounts. but the optimists, the cornicipians, and the denialists are all taking about 3 months timeframes
not likely, this is the new normal for the forseeable future
That's if it a vaccine turns out to be possible, too.
Plenty of viruses that we've never been able to develop vaccines for. Hopefully that's not the case for this one, but you've surely got to be prepared for that eventuality.
The last lurch to the left we should hope for is resetting of royalty rates on iron gas etc and tightening up of tax laws on multinationals.
With a resetting of these it would be easy to claw back 50 billion a year over the next 10 years.
So while this crazy consumption driven world carries on post this time we can pay off the debt.
Havent quite worked out who the debt is going to be too but thats a whole other rabbit hole.
I hope we can swing to simpler lives where we can learn to enjoy less and we help people get into their own homes without it creating this slave like relationship where your stuck paying it off for the best years of your life.
More community based living instead of living in a box, driving in a box to another box to work to then return and live our lives through other people watching on another box.
"And with the US and the UK gunning for confrontation, Australia will be forced to take sides. Thankfully we will side with our traditional Western cousins and the wheels will fall off the Sinofication of the Great South Land.
I see the world wakening from the spell of globalism. The scales are falling from people’s eyes and serious questions regarding each nation’s self reliance will be asked."
yep, and hopefully JIT, just in time...
the irony continues...
we're kind of probably a bit fucked either way tbh, but the current trajectory is well beyond untenable, anything but that angle
Blowin
I see as much evil in the Apples, Amazons, Google, gas companies etc and through things like Singapore and Irish marketing hubs we get little or no tax on who you describe as our cousins owned companies.
I have children who if this goes completely fucked and we have to choose sides will be likely conscripted to go and fight. This terrifies me and that's why we cant support and back up this language of hate.
Old men and their love of fucking power never put themselves or their family in danger.
If Chinese or anyone else want to buy shit off us make sure we collectively get our taxes and royalties.
Want to invest here be like other countries either get a local partner of they can buy apartments but not land.
As to the ponzi scheme you describe while I agree with what you say how do you reset it.
If it collapses banks collapse, building industry collapses. Savings destroyed. If you think what you saw with the toilet paper was crazy you would have seen nothing yet with a complete collapse of society.
Then to finish it what happens when we are pushed to a cashless society and the power gets shut down or internet disrupted.
Just watched 4 corners story on Amazon...James Bondish evil guys...sheesh.
Blowin
I understand what you are saying but how far can they stretch themselves.
China is becoming a super power with India following not far behind with Thailand Vietnam Malaysia etc also becoming major powers in their own right.
USA will need to accept that they are no longer the defacto ruler of the world.
The right or wrong of this is pointless debating it's just what's unfolding so I hope for an economic approach not military.
On the other subject I am curious about how you think you can dismantle the ponzi scheme without a complete collapse of our economy.
can someone let me know, again, how to post photos & videos, cheers
thanks I've saved it this time
I think you're off track Blowin, there're plenty of corporations which pay no tax and they're from all over the place - it's just the way the government in Australia runs, or maybe more to the point, it's the influence these companies have over the government no matter where the company is from.
I don't see it necessarily equalling U.S. protection at all.
Amazing viewing just then on Foreign Correspondent.
Atom Hunters in Antarctica, highly recommend it.. https://www.abc.net.au/foreign/atom-hunters/12110288
A bit of a laugh...
The Chinese government calling an avian flu "Olympic Fever" back in 2008,,
They probably didn't realise that animals spread disease , as revealed in "Our Horrifying Planet Ep 7"
And who can forget the Chinese space program ,,
Sloppy 2ft and full at the local this morning. Ordinarily it might see the usual morning crew, maybe five or so out, low key, bit of shit talk, few waves then get a long one in and disappear.
Started the same way this morning, usual faces just discernible in the dark, then more and more people started making their way across the rock shelf - could they not see how shit the surf was?
People milling about on the headland and in the carpark. Lots of faces I've never seen before. Perplexing considering what's going on. Drove out of the carpark, which, on a day like today might see the end row filled, but there were around 50 cars.
What the fuck is wrong with people?
Letting off a flare might attract more attention but under the circumstances it isn't necessary.
I feel for people who can't surf at their local, but for the love of god, don't drive down here and fuck it up for others. Stay away. And if you can surf, then get a few, and fuck off before the sun comes over the horizon or a Mercury photographer captures the scene and shuts it all down.
In discussions so far about this issue the fear has been that surfing will be shut down. Personally, given that the virus can be spread as easily in the water as out, and car parks provide no protection, I would be more concerned about catching the virus. I think anyone who paddles out in a situation where they cannot be sure of maintaining a couple of metres separation is extremely foolish.......as well as inconsiderate and irresponsible.
It was like some weird manifestation of bog roll panic.
It wasn't a point day, the surf would've been equal to or better on any of the surrounding beaches, but crew had, I assume, driven from Sydney and were now determined to surf the point irrespective of how irrational it was paddling out in such shit surf with so many people already in the water.
Ordinarily I'd agree, but the issue right now is that some councils are shutting beaches causing bottlenecks at surrounding beaches, which fill beyond nomal capacity, then those councils react, shut their beaches, and the bottleneck moves on again.
I think there will be major police operations in NSW over coming days. Cars with out of area rego will be stopped, sent home and probably fined.
"Professor Collignon, from the Australian National University, said he did not think it was a good idea to lock down everybody to the degree that was being experienced in Victoria or NSW."
Hey knuckleheads- sooner or later you actually want to catch this virus to develop immunity.
Just hope it doesn't kill ya.
Good luck to most of us ;-)
As a micro-biologist the professor’s views are worth considering but as he is not an expert in the specific area, epidemiology of viral diseases, they should not be allowed to undermine the unanimous views of the experts in that area which is that the lockdowns are necessary to avoid over-whelming the hospitals. Once that phase passes you will probably be able to put yourself at whatever level of risk you are most comfortable with, though it will be wise to minimise travel and contacts for a long time yet.

"With major blows to Chinese student numbers since the outbreak of COVID-19, peak body Universities Australia has warned the sector faces losses of between $3 billion and $4.6 billion and government support is critical to protect institutions' viability."
blame game begins:
"Professor Schmidt said the boom in international education had been pushed by Labor and Coalition governments under an "unwritten pact" and it was therefore a shared responsibility."
"What do we want our domestic course offerings to look like? What is the research that we need done for the short- and long-term? And how do we ensure this system – which had grown a fairly large dependency on international student income, which is going to be less in the future – what does that system need to look like?"
My 2c - a system where the Aussie student in the tute, who has decent English comprehension, doesn't act as translator and take the lion's share of doing the assignment given that grading is done on 'group work'.
Heavy police presence in the Margs region now, almost welcomed for the first time in history. No more breathaliser or drug tests, they are doing license checks on everybody and if your an out of towner you have to explain why you are there and if your from the city or out of town the warning is you have to be at home in 2 days , a police unit will visit your home to make sure you are back there and $1600 fine will be delivered if you are not. George Orwell eat your hear out!
Still packed line ups and carparks everywhere with locals who cant just have a quick surf and go home. Selfishness abides, prado driving surf mums , foilers, holidays lovin euros -you name it and will be the nail in the coffin eventually that gets us locked out. Surprisingly the surfers point crowd has come together and is doing a pretty good job of doing the right thing - mostly.
Easter friday looks hot and bit of good surf too, could be the end is nigh ....
Call the fuckers out people , its for your/ our own good.
It is always the back room deals done away from public scrutiny that show a governments true character. While the PM and the Treasurer are putting on a road show of compassion, in the back ground, once again Aussies are being dudded.
Most Australians have a big stake in our companies via superannuation funds.
Just over a week ago the government said they would be scrutinising all company takeovers to protect distressed Australian companies from foreign takeovers, but just a few days later they have opened the gates to sell out Australian equity to foreign investors by relaxing the rules on share placements that benefit mostly overseas investment banks and managed funds.
Earlier in the year Frydenburg berated company directors for paying out too much revenue in dividends to shareholders and instead should be keeping it to grow their companies which in turn would help grow the economy. That is now even less likely because for companies making share placements that same amount of money has to be divvied up between even more shareholders. So 1, shareholders ie superannuation funds, ie Australians, will individually receive less dividends, you just took a pay cut and your superannuation nest egg has just been reduced and 2, the companies still won’t be retaining earnings for growth because they now have to keep even more shareholders happy. So after telling companies that they have to do the heavy lifting to help grow the economy he has just made it even less likely that they will be able do that.

Also in the article it shows that Doug Warbick and Brian Singer might just be the luckiest guys in surfing.
