Because the world would be a better place if leaders only listened to Swellnet commenters, we've created a forum that makes it easy for them to gather our thoughts.

Today's shit talk is tomorrow's policy.

Seems it is a very few chip-on-shoulder types, that come on here, who think their opinion matters (or worse, is the TRUTH, and makes them 'part of something big', bahahaha)

Sometimes, they are bewildered when everyone thinks they're a bit of a wanker. You know the sort? Preachy and sanctimonious.. not interested in others.. judgey arseholes under the misapprehension they are being edgy and cool..

but an even smaller few do it in full awareness of what they are doing, in a tragic attempt to convince themselves that they are interesting.

I hate war and agree you shouldn’t leave your turf so if you trained 1 million Australian volunteer tradesmen and women or anyone with practical skills to operate a rifle properly with training every 6 months or so and put 1 million guns in highly secure bunkers around the country controlled by the army, no one would ever bother invading us and our defence would be secure and on standby.
Secure as America but no one can take the guns home to shoot the wrong folks.
China may have a lot of troops but you still have to move them around the world …but if they keep buying countries like the Solomon’s and today Nauru I suppose they can get a bit closer by stealth.
We need to be self reliant like Israel. I’m not convinced subs are a good idea. Missiles are the go and small fast Australian made planes. We actually used to make them. ….And a swarm of little fast Aussie ones would be better than a few big expensive American ones….we need to grow up and be self dependant.

The logistics with invading Australia make it really non-starter in my uniformed opinion.
But yeah, self-reliance would be a start, and maybe not having our emergency fuel reserves stored in USA.
Anyway getting off topic.

"We need to be self reliant like Israel. '
Dunno about that one Opti.
Seems like they've needed a lot of US weapons/support just to fight a terrorist org. in one enclave.
But anyway, reckon Keating was on the money at the NPC last year. Just ring the joint with Collins Class so they all know, I think his words were "They'd get a big bonk on the head".
And China couldn't control our cities and fight a Pacific War at the same time, even with their resources.
I'm sure the hawks at ASPI sit around war gaming this shit every day.
My thoughts are if they beat the US Fleet in the Pacific, they wouldn't need to invade. Some / a fair bit of surgical striking and when the TV comes back on we'd be looking at some quisling like Twiggy telling us it's all gonna be ok and to carry on.
Dunno about the Bogan Army idea either. They'd just have to blow up the armouries to invalidate that option.
Who knows, if that fkn orange deranged clown gets back in over there in 'merica. I for one might be inclined to maybe welcome our new Chinese overlords (not really).

There’s one benefactor in this transaction and it won’t be Australia. It further solidify’s our status as chief bitch to the US. An extension of AUKUS. The rule of strength and power, same as its been since the dawn of time same as it will always be.

Even if you dont use that power you need to have it so others think twice, or be aligned with others that have it, like Australia is aligned with the USA.

Your thinking is naive and idealistic, if you ran a country that others had interest in you would just get walked over and destroyed.

Other countries and leaders dont care about your ideals, they would just see you and weak and a fool and say, cheers thank-you very much

yeh, I know we used up narau, but there's a heap of them we invested in and sent aid to, for decades.... a bigger wallet walks into town... and they sell their souls...

no loyalty whatsoever, just resentment...

The Solomon Islands corruptly sold themselves to China.

Fiji have allowed themselves to be done by China except they are regretting it now and have made moves back to closer Fiji/NZ ties.

PNG and China

However, the Chinese always overplay their hands and start to bully the locals. Most islanders would prefer island/NZ/Aus ties as they see the reality.

In the early 90's, the company I worked for was buying metal out of PNG , the Solomons etc.
My predecessor had been advancing $US20K per container to a guy in PNG (who shall remain nameless). From memory I 'inherited' a $200K loss (10 containers worth) for metal that was never shipped.
Guy in PNG gets away with the money and a few years later gets elected Prime Minister...no joke

My mad 2c, Trump will win the primaries, Trump will go into the election and have rallies with 10s of thousands of people attending, the election day will come, polls will close, counting will get stopped late in the evening, it will restart in the early hours of the morning, and the other guy will win.

In a way it's a good thing as at this point in time the US can't afford to oscillate in its geopolitical strategy. Playing for all the marbles has begun and the US swing from isolationism/being active in global affairs that's characterised it's reign as hegemon can't continue. Neither side will allow itself to fail at this point. And for us, who wins the marbles is very important as it dictates how our lives will look, how our children's lives will look. Interesting article from a little while ago about Fiji.
Covid really hammered these sth pac islands financially with loss of tourism.
Ripe for the picking it would seem.
A couple of other points to add...maybe Fijians and other island nations don't hold our western culture in such high esteem..., and also Fiji has the Indian influence already there, which has had a strong impact on local politics and culture both good and bad. While they love our rugby sides, they have also seen us and other western nations take take taking from them, without giving an awful lot back. I've seen it first hand.
That's just my 2cents worth.

No VJ, fully understand that, even just looking at home we have had increases in our military in the north, Cocos island runway extensions, military exercises held for the 1st time with PHP etc

It's great power competition once more and power is all that matters now. One thing I've noticed about Trump/Biden - Biden continued Trumps trade policies, and then some. The US is reindustrialising at an astounding speed (and we are...um...??) The Inflation Reduction Act lit a fire under tech accumulation, they are actually rebuilding steel mills, I've even read in the UK they are just putting up factories without red/green tape... The US fleet is being upgraded with weapons systems that seem pure fantasy to me. I suspect no matter who wins the US will continue this path so in a way it doesn't matter.

In the meantime, China/Russia/Iran are trying to push and extend the Western militaries and munitions supplies, and are showing up strains and shortfalls. One really interesting take I got on this whole Houthi missiles/warship strikes escalation was that the US is withdrawing from it's role of global maritime police (can I say World Police?) and this doesn't mean they won't police, they will just police for their friends, and the rest is fair game. Almost like 'unleash project mayhem'. We really should have sent a ship.

^^^ posts regarding the Pacific all brought to you by decades of foreign aide cuts/ neglect with our (and the US’) eyes off our backyard and participation in illegal wars in the Middle East and Afghanistan.

A complete and utter foreign policy failure started by Howard but continued by successive governments
