VL show me a GOP state that allows abortions up to and including when the woman is dilating at full term.

If a woman has reached 40 weeks pregnant how could it be of any benefit to her to mental health to kill the baby? Anyway the law allows it which is disgusting. The video is DNC delegate Tran answering questions about her amendments to the abortion laws of VA. And she admits that her bill would allow the termination of an otherwise viable baby at the point of the mother dilating.

You are not seriously defending this are you, you thinks it’s ok for ONE unspecialised doctor to determine that a viable child, about to be born, can be murdered because if for some reason the baby was born her mental health might suffer. Jesus Christ. Good luck, you might want to check those morals.

I’m not waffling about the stupid shit Orange man spews which can equally be matched by his counterpart. I’m talking about a party ideology that thinks that it’s ok MAKE IT LEGAL to kill a full term viable baby about to be born, for any reason. Who needs protecting more in that situation, the woman or the child. I can’t believe you are arguing about it.

Funny, I was a subscriber at one time. Then I got mysteriously 'disappeared', along with various relatively innocuous comments*, and so I cut it off.

I say 'mysteriously', because the biggest fucking idiot on here - the fucking sickly narcissistic bigotted gronk that is you, BLOWIN - 'mysteriously' remained unimpeded, despite whatever rubbish was spewed up by said biggest fucking idiot on here. Weird homosexual innuendo, stalking enquiries, ludicrous handbags-at-dawn threats of violence. Name it, and you crapped it out. And that's not even considering your usual boorish, bog standard bigotry, and general wilfully ignorant ultracrepidarianism.

Jeez, I even offered to rejoin one time when you spat your dummy and melodramatically threatened to cancel your subscription and mince off into the empty void from which you sprang. Actually, 'mysteriously', that comment of offer was 'disappeared' too.

So there you have it.

Protection racket? Sheltered workshop? Snowflake safespace? Take your pick, Blowie.

Who knows, maybe this actual comment will be 'disappeared' too?

Ho fucken hum.

What would it matter if I did go to church? I am not religious, the only time I have been to a church service besides wedding was once, to skate the old indoor ‘god park’ near Wanneroo for free when I was a broke student. It wasn’t for me, or my mates and we left early. But hey I am not going to judge anyone for going to church.

And no I would not be up for aborted baby adrenochrome.

Donald Trumps adrenochrome.... well that would be quite an undertaking. Like him or loath him or want him dead. You can’t deny the guy has energy, that would be turbo charged adrenochrome. Which is why I made the comment. Plus I was reading Hunter S Thompson. Only drugs I take these days are alcohol and ibuprofen, back in my twenties I partied with the best of them. Then I started a family and watched my bro’s life fall apart with drug induced psychosis.

Fun to think about but no chance I would be brave enough to try anyone’s adrenochrome.

Sickaz- that ibuprofen isn’t much better for you than the piss. Both make life a bit more enjoyable at times but I can say from experience that ibuprofen isn’t the best thing for your gut.

JQ you were right to be sceptical. Adrenochrome is real though and seems to have an effect similar to mescaline. So it’s a powerful upper with hallucinogenic effects. Hunter S Thompson did seem to get artistic with aspects of it including that it needs to be harvested from the adrenal gland of a living person, which it doesn’t, it can be synthesised. Might still be possible to harvest it from a living person but I’m not sure. I admit it was this that grabbed my attention. Wikipedia has a pretty brief page on it which is a decent 3 minute summary.

It has featured in the work of some epic writer’s, HST, Aldous Huxley and Anthony Burgess which no doubt added to it’s mythical character.

I know that you know it Sypkan... The DNC had a few excellent, truly respectable candidates with vision running to be the candidate in the primaries.

I’m not a Bernie Sanders fan, but I like him better than Biden. Remember after the primary debates when everything was Bernie, Bernie, Bernie. And then like magic Biden was endorsed. Same thing happened in 2016 with Bernie and Hillary. Their establishment shows nothing to their true supporters but arrogant contempt.

The ‘democratic’ party doesn’t stand for democracy anymore. They are an elitist establishment quickly becoming the antithesis of a democratic institution - an ideological authoritarian power. They don’t want to represent and lead the people, they want to control them.

Compare that to the GOP primaries in 2016. They also had at
East one excellent candidate in Ted Cruz and the GOP establishment were panicked by the thoughtful of Trump leading them. But the republican voters wanted Trump, so the establishment sucked it up, let democracy make the decision and started get on with their job and got behind their new leader.

From Crikey:

Chaos as democracy: here’s what’s going on behind the scenes as America decides.

On paper the US electoral system seems complicated. In practice it's even more chaotic.

The oddest thing about US elections you need to know before watching today’s results is: no one’s in charge! US voting is decentralised right down to the county with rules that vary from state to state and town to town.

In Australia, we’re used to elections run and reported by independent election commissions. In the US, it’s a battleground of competing party, state and local boards and players. The ballot itself is supervised by politicians, perhaps themselves candidates in the election they’re overseeing.

So look behind the curtain. Here are the seven things you need to know:

Who counts the votes?

Lots and lots of counties. Texas has 254 counties. Even Wyoming has 23. Houston’s Harris County covers 4 million people. Loving in far western Texas has a population of less than 200.

In most states people vote in their local precinct. The numbers are reported to the county where they’re tallied with pre-poll and mail votes. (This pandemic year, early votes could be two-thirds of all votes. Some states are almost entirely vote-by-mail.)

Where are the figures?

Most counties put their numbers online, some don’t. Some states tally their counties. Some don’t.

Some report early votes on the night. Some, like Florida, North Carolina and Arizona pre-count and announce them when polls close.

Some count them in the weeks after. In Alaska they start counting them a week later. Some count post-marked votes that arrive after election day. Some don’t.

Voting is voluntary, so turnout is a guesstimate. The county vote percentage reported through the night is the percentage of finalised precincts, not votes. Big precincts come in late.

Into this mish-mash steps the media.

Historically, the broadcast figures came through Associated Press. Since 2018, the major networks (including CNN) have been using Edison Research, while Fox has its own data unit.

The data is drawn from county websites with added research. AP, for example, has 50 journalists around the country tracking the smaller counties as well as its local journalists in the larger county tally-rooms.

There’s competitive and professional pressure to get the numbers right. Famously Fox had its own reality TV moment in 2012: when Republican commentator Karl Rove disputed the figures, presenter Megyn Kelly walked the cameras into the data room so lead analyst Arnon Mishkin could explain why they were right and Rove was wrong.

How is the winner announced?

Here’s the norm: the networks and aggregators have a “decision desk” of data scientists, academics and journalists. They assess the data, together with exit polls, pre-election polls, estimated turn-out, demographics and previous elections.

Once the desk is confident of a state outcome, the network (or AP) will “award” the state’s electoral college votes to one candidate or another. Once one candidate has been awarded 270 electoral college votes, the election is called.

It’s a thoughtful process — yes, including by Fox. It’s rarely wrong, despite Fox’s notorious call-and-take-back of Florida votes in the 2000 Bush-Gore election. Public acceptance, professional caution and television’s love of building tension pressures the desk to wait until they’re sure.

So that’s that?

Of course not. This is television. It’s entertainment. The official count goes on in the counties for days, before votes are tallied and certified at the state level and the official winners declared. In most states, this won’t happen until late November.

It’s just a norm.

Enter the norm-breaker.

Donald Trump understands that television makes reality. Australia’s own Jonathan Swan reported in Axios on the weekend that Trump is prepared to bypass the network’s caution and declare himself the winner if media counting shows he’s ahead. He’s said he’ll send in “the lawyers” to stop counting.

The networks have said they’ll be cautious about broadcasting claims, and both Facebook and Twitter have said they’ll label them as unsubstantiated. There’s plenty of nervousness about whether the Fox commentariat will be equally reticent.

So, would that be a coup?

Certainly a gulp! But Trump needs: the election to be close, Republican states to go along and courts to waive him through.

To be close, he needs to be ahead in all the swing states with Republican legislatures where polls say he’s behind. So watch Florida, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Arizona and Georgia (plus too-close-to-call Texas, Iowa and Ohio). His campaign is working to block mail-in votes (with mixed responses from the courts) and right-wing activists are looking to disrupt election-day voting in Democrat-leaning precincts.

Right now the polls say Trump won’t have the numbers. But if he is ahead, keep your eye on what the Republican commentariat — especially on Fox — start saying.

Close is terrible, irrespective of who wins and loses.

The American system is so ad hoc - see Crikey explainer article above - that it leaves lots of wriggle room for legitimate gripes and for sour grapes.

The only chance for calm after the election is a decisive win by one party or the other so the vanquished pull their heads in and the winners can speak with the unequivocal voice of the majority.

Got to admit, the US slide into shit show dictatorship looks like it's going to continue. Trump looks like he is going to win this one, even though he will lose the popular vote again, and rely on voter suppression to get across the line. One of the first things this bum will do is pardon all his ex-administration criminal mates who are currently in jail.
It looks like another four more years of corruption, thuggery, and idiocy. This is how democracies die.

There's this recurring line from right wing folk that Obama let everyone down with his 'hope' campaign. Aside from everything else, using hope was false advertising or something. 'How did that hope work out for you?'

I wonder if the same people reflect on how 'great' America is now? (Ironic quote marks in full effect).

Perhaps they say, 'it's left wing folk who've stopped America achieving greatness these last four years'.

As if right wing folk didn't block Obama at every turn.

Not really going anywhere with this, just curious how blind partisan politics can be.

Blowin Wednesday, 4 Nov 2020 at 5:07pm

Not much chance of that I guess.

But then again he might be the sort of bloke who just digs his feet in and spites the enemy when they never back off. We have literally not seen a single day of Trump presidency when he wasn’t under spurious attack of some description. I’m not talking about bemoaning his policies , I’m talking about the relentless four years of Russia dribble , the impeachment double dribble etc etc .

This sounded counterintuitive and astounding to many but I reckon if he was shown a bit of respect he’d become way more respectful . I’m sure there’ll be an emotional outcry about my proposition but that’s how some people operate. In a combative environment they’ll remain steadfastly combative and act in ways they never would if they had a modicum of support around them.

If he wins four more years he deserves to be allowed to serve his final term without the perennial distraction of petty partisan politics. Constant antagonism brings out the best in no one

It’s not even about Trump it’s about bringing America together and trying to strive for the best the nation can achieve.

"...spites the enemy.."

Who we talking about here?

The people he's presiding over, or a rising foreign superpower?

Judging from some of the absolute clowns who have been elected / re-elected on the GOP side, there's very little hope for sensible governance over in the USA.
They voted in a fuckwit who did a Hitler history tour which was on "his bucket list" and another full on Qanon nutter.
How do you negotiate with that type of idiocy.

Yeah VL, that shit beggars belief. For me, all optimism for America righting the ship was lost when I heard that. It's only gonna get worse.

False equivalence Stu.

Obama never experienced a single moment of the type of antagonism that Trump has faced for his entire term.

Public declarations of resistance, attempts to delegitimise and impeach and obstruct at every turn.

The whole sorry Russia bullshit . Protests at the inauguration. Staged civil insurrection. Virtually an entire legacy media and Big Tech colluding against him . It’s been a relentless shit show .

Obama was - and still is - treated like a golden god because he appeared statesmen like and because he was black . Apart from those two factors he was a very , very ordinary President who was lifted above his station by a fawning media.

Come on Stu . Are you being disingenuous on purpose ?

The media , big tech and all the TDS sufferers who rejected democracy by not respecting the result of an election and persecuted the president from day one of his term. They were literally his enemy....self declared.

You didn't read it correctly.

Obama said hope, he didn't deliver.

Trump said great, he didn't deliver.

So if the critics diss Obama, then they have to diss Trump too.

(But if you want some reading about "obstructions at every turn" check senate leader Mitch McConnell's resume. Makes Tony Abbott look like a Miss Congenial)

Not disengenuous, Trump has many media backers in America, including Fox of course, who I think are the biggest in America.

Hardly like he's on his own.

Part of his schtick, adopted from Bannon, was to create the villain, stir it up, because he (they) know their followers like that stuff. And it worked wonders - the media bought it, the populace split - to the point he's now verging on cult status with all the rubbish QAnon theories entering the fray.

It's transparent as cellophane, or at least I thought it was.
