Would it even be legally possible to lock down the country? and prevent airlines from running all flights or people traveling to and from Australia?

What would be the legal implications from airlines etc, could they sue the government or something for loss of income/damages or whatever?

Many of you people bang on about freedoms like happy to let crazy people glue themselves to streets and prevent others from going about their business, or media to do whatever they like including breaking the laws in the name of freedom of the press or some BS.

IMHO every Australian should have the right to travel to and from Australia as long as they have a passport and visa and abide by set rules, I'm happy to go into quarantine for 14 days, but id be mighty pissed off if i couldn't go to or from Indo.

It would be a pointless anyway unless you could do it until they come up with a vaccine, that they are saying is min 6 to 12 months away.

Otherwise you close borders stop adding to the current wave, but once you open them up again you will get another wave.

You Blowin are probably my favourite poster here, i agree with you more than i disagree with you, i like it that you put yourself out there, but totally disagree with you on this issue.

Makes me angry just thinking of the possibility of this happening and would be truely draconian.

Government is doing fine, they were onto it early, we are not taking an approach like the UK, IMHO what we are doing is still a very radical approach but its trying to maintain a balance between economy, freedoms, health and controlling the wave of infection and its something that should be tinkered with and ever changing to adapt to rates of infection, to ensure the health system can cope..

The idea we can or should cut ourselves off from the world IMHO is crazy

And all that said, my old ladies immunity is pretty fucked up from years of arthritis and the drugs she has needed to take that have taken there toll on her body, if she gets it i doubt she would survive, so i do actually worry about her health, so i understand there is people that could be really affected badly, but people like my mother really need to take their own precautions which is basically self isolating and taking extra precautionary measures when go shopping or socialising etc

self isolating

it's a bit of a joke, but...

recently went through dps, I'm self isolating

I don't need to, I beat the deadline by 16 hours, and I feel fine, but this thing has been so understated for so long.... I feel I should

me self isolationg, jumped in my uber, back seat, had a great 20 min. convo with an indian (young) uber driver (who just returned from india), wasn't worried at all about being in the front uber line, everything is overstated, media beat up, trump' a liar etc.....

got home, brother and family drop round (old mother in law in tow). I explain sitution to them, whilst constantly taking backwards steps, them: general convo about media bullshit, hype, "stupid panic buyers", ....as I constantly walked away/outside/to other places...

paranoid? maybe, but I'd hate the old girl to get sick...

news ramping up, me: better get some food, supermarket choas, limited options, heavy vibe, hustle bustle, impossible to keep 1 5 metre distance despite my best efforts, as people saw it as opportunity to 'shelve' various items, couldn't get all I wanted, many alternative products purchased, people generally polite, a few clearly stressed, a trip to bunnings, more limited options, home for self imposed lock down

washing my hands all the way...

(and I'm a habitual non hand washer)

interesting convo between shop staff.... " I can't believe she's not isolating..."

yeh self isolating may be a joke, too little too late? definitely... but the alternative?

What leave arrangements Sypkahn? Or working from home?

Unless this government targets casual workers and others without any leave arrangements of any sort, this self-isolation strategy is kind of doomed from the get-go.

The curse of casualisation.

Unless...

Criminalisation comes into play. Fines and imprisonment.

And who'd be surprised by that?

tbb broke the internet...again (Not really difficult is it?)
1) If one Twin gets the virus does the other twin endeavour to be infected.
2) Can Dogs detect (sniff out ) Coronavirus, then this would be handy... right!
3) tbb has noticed predator birds & animals are fighting their way closer to towns.

World would benefit if someone could reboot the internet to solve these riddles.

Freeride, I’m taking Astragalus 8 immune health and recovery, COD liver oil, olive leaf extract, zinc, black elderberry, echinacea, vitamin c, tea tree oil inhalation’s, garlic, onions, curries, orange vegetables, chillies all to help strengthen my immune system, and to help keep symptoms where I want them.
The philosophy is preventitive medicine to fight it as it tries to enter your system as apposed to a visit to the doctor who will prescribe drugs to mask the symptoms once it’s in. Combine that with good hygiene that everyone is doing already, and social distancing. Sugar surpresses the immune system for several hours, so beer, unfortunately, is the enemy right now

Exercise and regular decent sleep is also important to a good immune system, so they say im sure drinking lots of water would also help and minimising caffeine and alcohol and obviously not smoking.

I still think there’s something suspect about this whole Coronavirus deal.

I can’t put my finger on what it is , but I feel like it’s a setup .

Denmark - less than 1000 cases ( 4 deaths ) just passed a law which makes it illegal to refuse the vaccine for the disease. A vaccine which is yet to be invented.

Suspect.

"A key measure used to track the growth rate of the virus is that rate at which the number of cases doubles. In Australia, it has taken four days for the number of cases to double."
{edit: quote from here... https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-03-17/coronavirus-data-reveals-how-covi... }

Some quick maths... If we've got 368 cases nationally now, then in a month that should rise to ~90,000 with ~900 deaths* and in two months ~12,000,000 cases with ~120,000 deaths*

TBB, hopefully those claims stack up and the drug gets approved quicksmart.

(*using an estimate of 1% mortality. Could well be higher).

Pops's picture
Pops's picture
Pops Tuesday, 17 Mar 2020 at 10:42am

Certainly is. You'd have to suspect that's largely due to a lack of testing over there (on which note, our actual infection rate is also likely much higher than the reported rate due to our own lack of avaible test kits). It'd be interesting to see how many of the USA links had contact with known cases.

And surely that's got to prompt an embargo against flights from the USA (citizens exempt)?

uncle_leroy Tuesday, 17 Mar 2020 at 11:14am

@ Distracted, Yes, but that infection from overseas will soon start turning into localised infections.
Time for Scotty from marketing to cut all flights coming into Australia, suspend domestic travel and enforced lockdown/isolate. Only way you're going to control the spread.
Would you rather lockdown for 1-2 months for guaranteed stop the spread, or continue on being complacent and still going rampant in 6-8-12 months time.....
We (Australia) are so far behind the 8 ball already. An island nation should have been more proactive. All other countries at least have temperature guns in operation at airports, outside shopping centres, single file, civil interactions etc.
Australia who gives a F attitude, people fighting for toilet paper, all rubbing shoulders together were probably already infected, maybe they knew they were already infected and didn't isolate due to them being selfish pricks. Now you've caught it and passed it on at work, friends, sports and kids, now it's 3rd, 4th, 5th contact of infection.
Only guarantee to stop the spread is isolation. Bush block, caravan, creek full of yabbies and shoot some deer doesn't sound so stupid.

uncle_leroy's picture
uncle_leroy's picture
uncle_leroy Tuesday, 17 Mar 2020 at 11:13am

I honestly don't think Australia culture is smart enough to isolate or partake in effective mitigation measures (wearing surgical masks on public transport or shopping centres etc)
We laugh at Japan/China/Asia when they wear masks on the streets or public transport, who will be laughing now or in 6 months time....

Pops's picture
Pops's picture
Pops Tuesday, 17 Mar 2020 at 11:15am

"still going rampant in 6-8-12 months time"
If things continue as they are, we'll all have it in just over *two* months (extrapolating to 64 days gives 24 mill cases - of course extrapolating that far from limited data is always error prone).
So yeah, it'd seem extreme measures will be needed sooner rather than later.
The balancing factor is crisis fatigue (if a crisis mentality extends too long people will start to get blase` and stop complying). So what's the optimum point to go into lockdown? A few hundred cases? A few thousand?

Pops's picture

"wearing surgical masks on public transport or shopping centres etc"
The problem with that is that we simply don't have enough masks. Surgical masks are effective for single use only - once you take it off or unhook it you need to throw it out. The advice to not use surgical masks has been based on protecting the supply for healthcare workers.
But you're right that we should be doing more to mitigate. The old "she'll be right" attitude is really gonna bite us on the arse I fear.
