Recently I went to an aeronautical museum down near narita and for a bit of extra cash got to have a 30 min training sesh and got to land a Boeing 737 Max in a real simulator. It's amazing how real it is. What's even more amazing is how much stuff you have to remember to get the plane down, even with all the additional computer aids.
I managed somehow to land safely- bit rough but I got her down.
It was an interesting and insightful experience.
Zen I did a father/son thing in Newcastle once for kids going that had gone off the rails (long story). Anyway it was run by a local fighter pilot from Williamtown RAF Base and involved a sit down and chat about life with the group, then we all had a crack at flying this single prop plane over the Hunter Valley.
You literally took over once you were up and handed control back at about 100 feet from the runway and once landed had to steer it back to the hanger. Most insane thing I've ever done in my life. Ended up in the grass though - steering a moving object with a tail rudder is no easy feat.
Ha ha! Awesome Gary.
Pilots are certainly a different breed I reckon.
I got to pilot/steer a seaplane once and I was drunk at the time.
Long story.
M&D bought us light aircraft flight, I get up there and in control, shown how to avoid a spiral downward etc and the pilot says "OK, I'm going to shut off the engine now," and I was like "No, no, don't do that, plane need motor." Anyway, I learned I could glide it. Bro, much like Zen, had been on the turps before his go and the pilots were seen swapping money on whether he would hurl. He looked destroyed afterward. First stop sign in car, driving home afterward, checked 6 directions including up/down.
Uncles flew everything from DC3 to 747-400s, one still flying into his 80s.
Tell us your inebriated seaplane story Zen!
And a link to some multi-millionare level surfing sex drug hedonism, RIP:

I got to fly an Auster light aircraft at Broken Hill when I was 15...The guy I was staying with was a pilot and let me fly for ages with some serious power dives etc over the desert...I remember it had canvas wings...Best fun ever.
I use to travel between Phillip Island and Tassie for holidays in a little cessna and once the pilot let this kid about ten years old steer...i guess the pilot really has control all the time with his steering wheel though...but at first i was like WTF?...(i was sitting in next seat behind them)
Also went for a job interview at Fraser island with the missus about 15 years ago where they flew us up from the Sunny Coast (landed on the beach on Fraser) anyway the pilot couldn't get the plane started (it was just us) and he kept trying, going fuck fuck, rang his boss asking how to start it etc, had to wait 10 minutes before trying again, he finally got it started, but it was a bit dodgy.
Like an old car that you cant start.
Haha gold stories. I can say I piloted the Manly fast ferry in towards the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Circular Quay. So touchy though with the controls, a little joystick that with the lag meant I was always over-correcting at first.
Nice Craig, the kids were allowed to drive the Acadia (iirc) a 100+yo Huon Pine ferry on the Pieman in Tassie, traditional wheel and all!
Indo here's a famous photo in the image link of a plane landed on Fraser with the wreck of the Maheno, circa 1935

It’s par for the course with me, every time I’ve taken friends or family up for a joy flight I’ll always hand over the controls
Schools are happy to give you a taster so you could book a 1hr lesson knowing you’ll be in charge of quite a few things, including the takeoff! Sickest fun

second that!
Nuclear submarines fo Oz?! They have to be fkn kidding.
https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-09-15/allied-naval-united-states-biden-...
I can understand the defence benefits of a nuclear sub with range and whatever other features but they will underestimate public backlash.
Great decision as our previous Sub plan was Substandard .
Funny stuff Udo! One two miss a few!
RE the sub Subs, I wonder if the Feds have even told WA of their plan?
Nuclear Subs is a very smart move by the government !
It replaces a shit previous decision to buy/build substandard subs .
It places nuclear power on the next election agenda . Both Labor and Greens will be thinking it is a gift from heaven . They will be proved wrong again imo .
It introduces nuclear energy as a possible way to reduce CO2 emissions . The only way I can see Australia getting to Net Zero CO2 by 2050 .
I hope carbon credit trading is not part of this plan !!! I can guarantee that Wall Street has a plan to dominate this system and do what they always do - rape and pillage .
They will make trillions from it . I also know that if Wall Street make trillions EVERYBODY else will lose out . It is just how it works .
The mood in the US has changed dramatically . Have you seen the football games where the crowd is chanting F..k Joe Biden ? These polls prove it .
"But here in September 2021, both sides of the political spectrum are very angry. Just check out these stunning numbers from a brand new CNN poll…
A new CNN poll finds that 74% of U.S. adults now say they are “very or somewhat angry” about the way things are going in the U.S. today — that includes 88% of Republicans, 70% of independents and even 67% of Democrats. But wait, there’s more.
Another 69% of U.S. adults now say that things are going “pretty or very badly” in the country these days — that includes 91% of Republicans, 72% of independents and 49% of Democrats.
Those numbers are crazy. Just a few months ago, there was so much optimism, but now the mood of the nation has completely shifted.
Surprisingly, that same CNN poll asked a question about illegal immigration, and it found that even most Democrats are concerned about “the movement of undocumented immigrants”…
Seems like they regret their voting at the last election . Missing Trump !
I really really hope Trump runs again next election, even if he doesn't get in, just the entertainment factor of the election campaign will be top notch.
Nuclear subs, i heard the Greens are against the idea even though carbon free, apparently they believe solar powered subs are better despite the need to come up to recharge batteries on the surface every few hours.
"The mood in the US has changed dramatically . Have you seen the football games where the crowd is chanting F..k Joe Biden ? These polls prove it ."
whilst I agree the mood has changed significantly... those vids were quite a let down, being hyped big time by all the usual suspects... when you click on them, there was about 100 private school tools in blazers, trying to get a chant going, amidst granstands of thousands, didn't even make it to booze hill bogan 'davos a wanker' status...

how could you not be angry? ...the country is in the midst of a bloody shambles, with a president that needs constantly surrounding by carers and damage controllers rather than much needed advisors, and an agenda that is totally off the rails
the only people denying its a bloody shambles are the die hardest of die hard supporters, the still deranged ...still!!?... and his PR team, ...and even these 3 groups are appearing more and more demoralised by the day....
"Those numbers are crazy. Just a few months ago, there was so much optimism, but now the mood of the nation has completely shifted."
wait til winter hits... and another wave of the rona blues...
"Surprisingly, that same CNN poll asked a question about illegal immigration, and it found that even most Democrats are concerned about “the movement of undocumented immigrants”…"
again... how could you not be angry? ...over a million people have crossed the border under big joe's big invite... they're basically riddled with corona, which isn't a judgement, its just a reality... and they are caught and released into the wider community, with no vaccinations... ...what could possibly go wrong?
aside from the hypocrisy, recklessness, and ridiculousness being ever exposed by big joe's ever evolving authoritarianism on the matter, it's a disaster...
"Seems like they regret their voting at the last election . Missing Trump !"
I don't think there's that many that are actually missing trump...
but it does seem there's a hell of a lot that had no idea a biden / harris administration could be so bad...
"It places nuclear power on the next election agenda . Both Labor and Greens will be thinking it is a gift from heaven . They will be proved wrong again imo ."
you're dreaming there!
"It introduces nuclear energy as a possible way to reduce CO2 emissions . The only way I can see Australia getting to Net Zero CO2 by 2050 ."
I'll take carbon over nuclear and the cult of carbon zero anyday ...and I think a lot of aussies agree...

you're right there, it's s scam, coupled with the hollowness of the ever developing social media social credit system... it'll be the scammiest scam of the century...
Re: the sub decision, that's a big call. Aus - UK - US trilateral security partnership is huge: imagine the big new Brit carriers operating with Australian AWD in the Pacific (been done before). The subs are going to go from respectable (Collins class after problems ironed out were very stealthy, new French ones would be one of most capable diesel-electrics) to absolutely fearsome. They take time to build tho. Wonder what happens to ASC?
Article points out reasoning: "replace its existing Collins class subs with a boat more suitable to the deteriorating strategic environment." Last few paras point out the naval build up in the north which is something we have discussed before on these forums, at time of US election and policy not appearing to change drastically from the Trump admin. With US out of Afghanistan, the periphery of the global continent is more defined, and the oceanic powers are concentrating their naval depth.

Like an old car that you cant start.
I used to fly regularly from Bridport to Flinders Island with this old bloke. I remember the first time I went we had to put our lifejackets on before boarding. Then he pulls out his calculator and asks each one of us what we weighed. I think I had white knuckles before boarding. Used to do the Wynyard - King Island trip as well and taking off from Wynyard one day you couldn't see out the front windscreen because of the hail. I thought we were going to die landing at King Island. Worst experience ever.
I love making big calls Jonno . I turned the swear jar at work ($135 ) into $1500ish betting on Brexit and Trump . Made a charity very happy .
Going to really enjoy Labor and the Greens come a cropper on this issue . They make a habit of getting blindsided .
It will be the Nuclear Election and it will be great seeing them go Nuclear when the unexpectedly loose again . Two Bradbury's !

Yeah that's where i use to fly into or out of Wynyard and it also use to go from Phillip Island to king Island, i remember we use to get standby flights, so just go to the airport and get a cheap seat if there was room.
Do you know Macca from Flinders Island? (believe he is the only surfer living there these days, good surfer too)
I was wrong ( again ) ! The Labor party were briefed beforehand and have supported the idea .
Keating is furious and Carr is just waiting for his speech to come from China .
Well done Dutton and Scomo for finally not listening to the Canberra bureaucrats .
Back in the day flew plenty of hours in a Piper Cherokee.
One highlight was buzzing camels in the desert and low flying around Ayers Rock (as it was known) before landing at the strip just next to it and climbing the rock.

People gave that away years ago when they first bought a smart phone. Health apps track every single detail of your life.
Location tracking etc etc.
Surveillance capitalism has been endemic for a decade.
":Initial evidence points to various issues related to adopting such schemes in liberal democracies such as in Europe and the United States—where data privacy, trust and ethical issues strongly limited participation in contact-tracing efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic46."
Denmark ditched their Covid Passport.
I think we will follow suit.
Thats if we ever get one.
Probably need some kind of cert to get OS.
I could be wrong, we'll see.
Hope its not designed by the same mob who developed the Aust COVIDSafe App
"If you’d read the link that I provided, you realise that the Digital ID will be used to not just track but also control everything we do."
I read the article.
It's speculation about what might happen but as in the excerpt I highlighted above they make clear that as in Covid tracking apps there may be " where data privacy, trust and ethical issues strongly limited participation in contact-tracing efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic46."
But, you may be right.
Just wondering if anyone here is still rocking a dumbphone (and thus signing in manually)? These text-based forums are apparently the Triassic nowadays (but they work) - any luddites in the SN community? Any moonshiners powering their cars on devil's liquid of one form or another?

you can have a smart phone without buying into the whole surveillance capitalism thing
don't get a health app
turn off location services
fixed
and if you're a serious conscientious objector...
use a different email for every new device you get
don't sync your devices
and use a vpn
people constantly complain of targeted marketing, stalky ads, and algorithm news and video bubbles that develope...
I don't have any of these problems
it seems my phone doesn't even know who I am!
and what a pleasure it has become to use... since we became like tinder sluts passing in the night...

I have a smart phone, but dont use it to check in at shops etc, i dont care about surveillance or whatever, it just didnt work first time i tried, cant be bothered downloading anything to make it work, i only sign in if i really have to, just over it all.
Similar here with the phone, didn't work and don't use the phone much tbh.

That's unreal Patrick
The powers to be want to eliminate cash . Everything needs to be digital . That way they can monitor everything that happens .
They want to limit surfers from travelling to international waves as well .
"This has all been enabled to further the elimination of paper money and thereby the failing governments believe they will be able to grab whatever taxes they demand and nobody will be able to avoid taxes ever again. On top of that, they also want to eliminate international travel as much as possible to “save the planet” but also to prevent people from fleeing their jurisdiction for taxation. The end goal is a hybrid of the old Soviet Union whereby we will not be able to freely travel and ensure we will be the future economic slaves.
This is why Twitter banned Trump. Whatever excuse BigTech can use to shut down Trump and ensure Biden would win the election was all done to further this agenda where they were promised that traditional banks will become obsolete. Branches will no longer be needed. You can already deposit a check by scanning it into your phone so you need not visit a bank office. Once cash is eliminated, then all that would be left is a safe deposit box which they envision is loaded with valuables you need to pay taxes on."
These are someone else's views that I agree with . Deliberately not named .
