Its quite a while since i read the article so i dont remember all the specifics but from memory places like Germany are ideal apparently.

Love the bit where she skips seamlessly from the ISI / Taliban relationship to the US southern border and the cartels. So convincing. Like you said, more questions than answers. So interesting.
Btw, Have you know anything about Afghan Pakistan border crossings like Spin Boldak? I reckon you could bomb them for a couple of weeks straight* and not make a dent in the Taliban’s ability to fight the Afghan government.

*which the US can’t, and won’t.

so, you know stuff and stuff...

tell me, why does the US avoid and even sponsor pakistan, when they harbour and hide people like osama bin laden?

is this purely about the bomb?

is it about the perpetuation of the IMC?
(as some put everything down to... but I try not to buy in to)

a house of cards of alliances?

genuinely interested, if we can avoid the hostility...

Fascinating video / slideshow supa. A couple of old close family friends went through Afghanistan in the early 70s, on the overland route from Europe to Australia. They said it was totally safe - but the ‘sophistication’ of Kabul was a huge contrast to the rest of the country. I think it still is.

Kandahar is central Pashtunistan. It was the Taliban capital form 1994 onwards. Kabul is something entirely different.

My Parents were there in the late 70s on an overland trip too. I think right before the soviets came in. Had a similar experience.

Thanks VJ got a good laugh from Wally.
The Gillian fishing charter out of Rosebud pier used to "pick-up" Nobby, 300kgs+ of bull seal from out near South Channel Fort (from memory). Nobby would swim up to the Gillian and clamber aboard, much to the shock of the passengers on the boat! He would sit on the engine housing and get fed tasty fishy morsels.

Here's another very common problem in ICU's.
So many ICU patients get delirium, for reasons mentioned in the article. The ICU cohort of patients are generally older, we pump them full of drugs, interrupt their circadian rhythm with constant interventions and have 'bells, alarms and assorted noises" constantly...it's a wonder that not all our patients are totally delirious.

Here's some quick, interesting, but rudimentary sums on the cost of coal power generation v PV...

All approx. values...

Coal cost today in AUD ~ $0.22/kg
Thermal energy of coal ~ 6.3kWh/kg
Efficiency of steam-electric power generator ~35%
So, electricity produced by a kg of coal = 6.3*0.35 = 2.2kWh/kg
Taking the inverse, we have 0.425kg/kWh

So, the current cost of electricity production using coal alone (that is without the cost to operate, maintain or BUILD the plant) is 0.22*0.425 = $0.1/kWh. Or 10c per kWh of electricity generated.

Looking at PV power generation.

Average PV install cost is approx. $1000/kW
A 1kW system will produce about 900kWh/year (depending on the location)
The expected life span of a PV system is 25 years.
So the current cost of electricity production using PV is $1000/(25*900) = $0.044/kWh. Or 4c.

So, when only considering the cost of the coal itself, PV is currently approximately 50% cheaper. The phase out of coal isn't happening because it's a horrible polluter, it's happening because it's horribly expensive.

Totally, that was what happened to Dad. Back in SARS time in 2002, Mum was working in an international studenty place and caught it, gave it to Dad, who went to hospital and got intubated. When he woke up he was hallucinating huge spiders coming out of the ceiling and frantically trying to mumble this to all who would hear.

Lovers of Jacinda might be able to answer the question on most reasonable people's lips - why wasn't the piece of shit deported back to Sri Lanka once he was released from jail? Imagine being a victim/family connection/friend and being told that 'we couldn't do anything about him' because 'legally he had to be released'? FFS. Bemused by the latest news that News Corp will now back Anthropogenic Global Warming.

On the face of it, that's great news, News Corp have done little more than play the contrarian for contrary's sake, muddying the waters along the way, providing a vehicle for the undecided or the dopey.

But if you need further proof that News Corp makes zero attempt at neutral, balanced reporting then surely this is it. A self-admission that News Corp journalists report simply what their masters tell them to report.

Yes, yes, you can be Noam Chomsky to my Joe Public and tell me ALL mainstream media has agenda, but none are as purely partisan as News, none have the reach, and none have editors all moving in lockstep.

Hey San guine, looking forward to this. The two hottest women on tv are Lily from Letters and Numbers, and the woman who does the same job on 8 out of 10 cats.

Lily did a special the other night on how our brain is easily fooled. Nothing I hadn’t seen before but loved it anyways. Alas, she’s married, I’m about 30 years too old for her and I’d fumble my words anyway if I ever met her. Oh, plus I’m already married, that could be a problem too.

Just started getting back into crosswords, just doing the quick one at the moment as part of a brain maintenance programme. Keeping the cryptic for later in life. Will have to buy a book on how to solve cryptic, it’s pretty similar to learning a new language, you have to know where they are dropping clues that us noobs as yet can’t interpret.
