Pearl Jam are playing at the end of next year. Wasn't really much of a fan back in the day, but certainly appreciate what they did.
However.. tickets are $500 for cheap seats and $600 for the 'premium' seats (this is at the Heritage Bank Stadium, on the Gold Coast).
Eh? Since when did concerts become this expensive?
A single day at Splendour in the Grass is $180, three days is $400.
What's the most anyone has paid for tickets to a single-headliner? Can't recall what mine is (I prefer smaller, more intimate shows over stadium gigs) but it'd be hard to justify paying much more than $80-100 for even my most favourite band.

The larger global artists have gone all in on completely fucking over their fans and trying to squeeze as much money out of them as possible. Don't tour here for 10 years, then when they do they charge through the nose. No doubt they'll squeal about the cost of putting on the show, but as someone who's seen PJ multiple times at far smaller venues than Marvel freaking stadium, I don't have any interest in getting ass-reamed by their current prices.

Wooo that's crazy, and stadium size gigs suck anyway, they are like Wave pools compared to Ocean surfing.
Id much much rather see a lesser known band at a pub like say the Tote or Corner hotel in Melbourne, the biggest size gigs i will go too are say the size of the Metro in Sydney or Forum in Melbourne or a festival.
Festivals are okay as just give you a chance to see bands you love but also check out bands that you wouldn't bother outside of a festival.
For instance i would never buy tickets to go see Pearl Jam even if only $50, but id be quite happy to go to a festival where they were the headliner and check out their set.
Far out $500 is insane for a stadium gig of sleep inducing folk rock.
$120 ish for Chilli Peppers. I wouldn't normally go to a stadium gig either but made an exception as a long time fan. Should have gone to Qotsa in Torquay but it was a festival and my old bones can't handle a long day in the sun like I used to.
the kids and I payed $200 ea for Fleet Foxes & the National at ICC Sydney Theatre earlier this month. Steep as, but undeniably civilised and the sound was absolutely perfect.

Double digits is the max I’ll pay. I just don’t want to spend more than that on anyone. I have other financial priorities. Pearl jam would be awesome, I love them. I went to a concert in Eastern Europe in 2006, I don’t know how I survived, it was nuts.

Yeah, I was contemplating this but I’m not a huge fan of The Nationals. They’ve got some great songs but can be slow going at times.
yeh @flollo, I've never understood the National attraction either, I mean, they're fine..
the kids and I just have meaningful fleet foxes family memories..
but as we all know, plenty of unreal overseas bands under $50. Local stuff usually cheap as, and your money goes to good. Gotta keep an eye on it though if you go to a few each month.
A mate made a good point about cost-of-living for 'the youth': how could they possibly afford going to gigs like we used to? (I am hoping the answer is a wicked grass-roots scene, venue-accessibility willing, or backyard parties, neighbours willing).
My only other expensive one coming up is Peter Hook and the Light at the Forum, $85. Seems reasonable.
Yeah, I agree. Prices are out of control. I tend to attend the theatre gigs. Intimate settings, great sound systems and lots of alternative options. Festivals are overrated and overly expensive. Shame on Pear Jam though, I would love to see them but I can’t justify the cost. This unplugged Porch is a classic, always brings great memories.

I was being metaphorical. I don't think we would get arrested although, burning flares indoors would be controversial. My point was that I had some great concerts in different parts of the world and crowds are nuts in some places. Different from here.

yeh, and kylie not the puller they were hoping maybe ... festival wisdom is that tickets will be down if the first week doesn't sell strong, a few festivals have canned it after a poor first week. heard a good interview on RN yesterday, a guy making the point that festivals are often the 'gateway drug' to a lifetime of being engaged in the live arts, and important beyond just the event.
Tough musical times for the kids.
Seems they're not interested in "legacy" acts and good for them if they really have moved on from the bland porridge that is Lime Cordial/Spacey Jane/Jungle Giants/Ocean Alley etc etc.

JJJ as far as I know is continuing its slide into irrelevance, losing touch with its target audience and consequently losing even more market share.
Maybe terrestrial radio just can't compete with the algorithms of Spotify, it just can't be everything to everyone.
In any case I hope that a creative live music scene (as distinct from JJJ's embarrassing Like A Version) not only hangs in there but flourishes.
Thankfully there're still a few low key places around here that are willing to host up and comers.

None of her peers were even remotely interested in Splendour (they used to froth on it).
Lame line-up and too expensive.
I could be wrong but I'm feeling a slight resurgence of grass roots live original music around here.
Some unrenovated dingy pubs with low ceilings are still willing to host, in contrast to the big buck places.
The expense would have to be the major barrier.
To spend hundreds just to get in, then paying $15 and upwards for a drink isn't sustainable for me, let alone the kids. Then there's food, transport, accom etc.
The lineup was also very soft, not sure where they can go from here..
Reducing ticket prices and the cost of food/beverage but then the artists apparently cost a lot to book in. Tricky situation.
I'm stoked I got to live and experience the growth of the festival scene from Falls back in Lorne, through to Laneway and Splendour. It seems to have all peaked around or just before 2019 and then declined from there.

Radio can certainly compete. I was a massive Triple J follower, I wouldn't even consider listening to any other stations. I only stopped in the last 2-3 years as it became completely unbearable (and even then, it was barely digestible for years before that). I purely stopped listening due to crappy content and childish, immature hosts. It wasn't the algorithms that stopped me from listening.

I'm 100% Spotify except for The Minefield's weekly episode which I never miss.
So what's changed culturally that people will go to mainstream acts in a stadium in preference to a festival?

Torquay "Here comes the sun" festival this weekend. $130 is pretty steep for "bland porridge." Looks like it will run though with only 90 odd tickets left.....probably spill over punters going to Bells. I'm a fan of Ball Park, but I don't know much about Ruby Fields and ambivalent about Ocean Alley.... I only really listen to radio for talkback now. Every now and then I let Spotify DJ try and push new music on me.

Go and see these guys next time they play in your area. The shows they did in '22 at the Tote were loose as...saw some lights get ripped from the ceiling.
Did a nostalgia trip up in Brisbane a few weeks ago with The Church aka Steve Kilbey and friends.
Saw them at Bluesfest a few years ago and they were unreal but the Brisbane show at The Triffid was lacklustre.
Kilbey concentrated on his slower, later stuff which didn't get the crowd moving at all.
Still think he's one of Australia's best ever songwriters.
I always check what's on at the Crown and Anchor, Metro, Lion Arts when in Adelaide.
Barwon Club, Old Bar, Evelyn, etc in Melbs.. how's Perth going for a live scene? ..you guys don't have pokies over there do you?

Good to see that those stage divers dragged themselves away from playing Fortnight.
When in Melbourne try the Last Chance Rock Rock and Roll Bar. As trad a pub as you can find, lots of gigs by small up and comers. For about the price of a pint you can see 3 bands. Some great, some not so. Can't go too far wrong. As for radio, 3RRR or PBS streaming are good at times. Lots of variety, so easy to find your thing in there somewhere.

Maybe just my age, tastes..., but for mine, early 2000s was the peak. mid-late 90s and early 2000s was the best of times - zzz Market Days (the original festivals - cheap, wild, fun...), early Livids, Big Day Outs, early Homebakes, that Summersault festival... all more affordable, great lineups, looser atmosphere... it all went to shit not long after that

Mid 90s for sure.
Zed market days were classic, no kids in cute festival outfits there, they were grungy and loose and maybe a little dark. Went to a few, one at Kangaroo Point with the Story Bridge looming over head, one down by the river at Davies Park and one in Musgrave Park complete with arson, general anarchy and mounted police horse charges.
Who the fuck needs tv with entertainment like that.
I don't remember much about the one up at Wickham Terrace, the acid was pretty strong.

Currently loving The Drones' album "Havilah".. incredible songwriting and some of the best recorded guitars and drum I've heard in a long time. I'm a little late to the party with this album but it's on high rotation at the moment and will probably stay there a while. I've seen these guys live once (Fowlers, Adelaide) and fortunately they're incredible on stage too. Can't wait to see them again.
