Western Australia Surf Forecast by Steve Shearer (issued Fri March 24th)

Features of the Forecast (tl;dr)

  • ESE-SE winds most of this week with another pulse Fri
  • Moderate reinforcing SW swells this weekend with more ESE- SE’ly winds
  • Pattern looks to continue into next week- small/mod SW pulses and ESE-SE winds
  • Long range WSW swell Wed with more mod SW swells Thurs/Fri

Recap

Size dropped yesterday with 3ft surf between the Capes under fresh offshore winds, with a few 1-2ft waves in Perth and Mandurah. Surf has been smaller through the morning with 2ft surf in the Margarets region, tiny in Perth and a new swell just starting to fill in after lunch. Offshore ESE-SE winds have been fresh again through the morning, tending more E/NE-E in Perth.

New swell just starting to fill in Fri

This weekend and next week (Mar 25 - 31)

No great change to the weekend f/cast with a strong high ridging in from the South and inland trough maintaining a strong SE-ESE flow across the SW land division. Those winds will stay ESE-SE Sat but tend more SE-SSE Sun as the trough retreats northwards.

Surf-wise this a’noons pulse extends into Sat with 3-4ft surf  (bigger 4-5ft at swell magnets) between the Capes and 1-2ft surf at Mandurah/Perth.

A slight reinforcement holds similar size Sun with winds less favourable as they tend more SE-SSE and add chop and S’ly drift to exposed breaks.

Into next week and the slow moving pattern remains entrenched through most of next week with a “stuck” high pressure to the SW of WA maintaining an ESE-SE flow- depending on the positioning of an inland trough. So no change to winds- offshore at fresh and gusty levels through the morning for most of next week.

Surf holds in the 3-4ft range through Mon, easing a notch into Tues, as the suppressed storm track well to the south of 55S maintains background energy.

A low flaring up on the Madagascar side of Heard Island Sun adds some small WSW energy to the mix Wed with 3ft sets through the a’noon, smaller 1-1.5ft in Perth/Mandurah.

The flat storm track angles a bit more favourably Tues/Wed as it passes 100E, suggesting a stronger pulse into Thurs, building further Fri. At this stage expect surf to build into the 3-4ft range Thurs, stronger 4-5ft on Fri with offshore winds likely to continue.

We’ll see how that is shaping up on Mon so check back then and have a great weekend.
