Limited options, opening up once the low shifts S
South-east Queensland and Northern NSW Surf Forecast by James Casey (issued Friday 2nd April)
Best Days: Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday (depending on your location) once the low moves off the coast and S/SW winds clean things up a bit
Outlook:
- Strong SE winds for most the weekend limiting options to protected southern corners
- Solid E swell to peak on Sunday/Monday/Tuesday (depending on your location)
- Conditions to clean up after the peak in the swell as the low moves south of your region
- Another peak later in the week from the western flank of the low, looking to be around Friday
Recap
Yesterday wasn’t great across the region. Clean enough early but becoming windy out of the S/SE.
Today it’s 2-3ft for Mid N Coast and Sunshine Coast, a bit bigger for N NSW up around the 3ft mark and smaller for the Gold Coast, a sloppy 2ft. Offshore winds for the Mid N Coast, everywhere else onshore with fresh SE winds making it bumpy.
The long weekend
Well the main feature for the long weekend is the tropical low forming in the Coral Sea over the coming days.
Already we are seeing a SE swell fill in for the Sunshine Coast, as a region of low pressure squeezes a ridge of high pressure over the coast directing strong SE winds towards the coastline.
Unfortunately winds will continue to be strong and out of the SE until the low moves south of the region. When this happens is dependent on what the low does which are temperamental at the best of times.
For SE QLD, it isn’t looking like clearing anytime this weekend with strong E/SE winds limiting you to protected southern corners. There’ll be plenty of swell though peaking up around the 6ft mark for the Sunshine Coast for Sunday late into Monday and a similar size for the Gold Coast but peaking 24 hours later, Monday late into Tuesday.
So while there’ll be waves there’ll be limited options so anywhere with decent quality waves I’d expect to be crowded.
Further south, N NSW will be onshore with an onshore flow shifting between the E and E/SE for most of the weekend. It’s not looking great for much of the weekend. It'll be 3-4ft wave for in the lead up with the low strnebthening off the coast creating a 6ft peak around Tuesday morning.
The Mid N Coast will see smaller waves around the 2-3ft mark for most of the weekend, peaking on Tuesday around the 3-5ft mark. Onshore winds will prevail shifting between the E/SE and the E/NE.
The new week
Once the low shifts south, becoming a Tasman Low, expect a window of clean conditions as winds turn S/SW. At the same time as this happens there’ll also be an easing trend in the swell.
At this stage it looks like it’ll begin to clean up on Tuesday for the Sunshine Coast with S/SW winds opening up the points and southern ends of beaches. The same will happen late on Tuesday into Wednesday for the Gold Coast, Wednesday for N NSW and on Thursday for the Mid N Coast.
There is still plenty of uncertainty regarding the movement of the low though, especially for the Mid N Coast, with easterly component winds a chance of remaining until next weekend.
Later in the week there is plenty of model disagreement but there’ll be another spike in the swell from the SE around Friday from the western flank of the low, followed by a strong S change to move up the coast. We’ll dissect that more on Monday.
Comments
Cheers. Pity bout the winds.
Just a heads up, the link in the email is broken.
On the Noosa cam there is a swarm of ants running each other over in ankle snappers on Sat morning. Oi Vey!
Yeah, been watching that intermittently today. For a good few minutes nobody was making a drop and big board’s going every which way. Chaotic scenes.
I am away in cairns for the swell. Focusing on trail running and sailing.. kinda nice to avoid the madness for once..
Sometimes I wonder if it’s worth these days ( post 40’s reflection)....
Walsh's Pyramid?
Ohh that’s a good one, brutal... That’s in august.. bartle frere tomorrow!!

Interested to hear how you go, I've always wondered if you can do it in a day or if you have to camp out at the upper camp.
Walsh's Pyramid is a great little walk, I do it every time I'm up that way.
When is the swell peaking on the Sunshine Coast ?
MSW has it peaking tomorrow morning
Pretty mixed bag for the opening stanza of Autumn.
Handful of good days but some of the ugliest looking days I've ever seen in there too, and plenty of them.
I feel like the past couple of months have just been wind-ragged swells. Looking forward to autumn proper to kick in.
Noosa was epic today despite 2000 plus people. Got my injection that's for sure, better than cocaine and hookers!
Head high waves at Agnes this morning.
how crowded is it...and fat as fk
Noosa cam is entertaining. Bank between Johnson's and first point is about as good as I've ever seen it. Kookery is next level though! The little waist high reelers are proving difficult for 95% of the punters in attendance.
Is there a replay on the Noosa cam? 12:29pm 5/4/21 one slightly nastier, bowlier wave went through the inside of 1st point, munched 6 separate guys trying to takeoff on it as it went through lol
First Point is bowling out. Looks sick, besides the crowd. Yep replay to come in next hour or so.
Let us know where the replay is - you'll be selling rights to the footage of that wave, funniest thing I've seen in a while. Maybe a minute either side of 12:29 so have a look for it.
9:15! Haha

Hehe! The bank does look excellent. Cat-like reflexes are the go
Thanks VJ..
Really interesting to see the clip has 500+ likes and nearly 40 comments shortly after posting, that's the power of Insta I guess....
And, I'm going to be controversial and say if you gave that wave to the crew who surf Scarborough/Contacio/South Trigg/Trigg Pt, most of them would make the wave, as they deal with a very abrupt bowly elevator drop of a takeoff every day, but perhaps not get to enjoy the quality of a point wave like that! A beauty.
The bank on the bigger wide sets between nationals and first point was amazing, was a case of get the best wave of your life, walk back get the best wave of your life, repeat. The barrels at first point we're as perfect as supersuck. Not a drop of water out of place
Yeah righto mate....
Your a fuckin kook Richard.
Your very welcome to give me your details and come and say that to my face.
Go home mate.
I left mate, don't worry. But it's not like it's a secret there were 2000 people out and you had to be seriously skilled to get a wave. The vibe was great though despite the crowd, none of the Lennox head bullshit. Which I thank you dannon for. I even got dropped in on today by a young kid and didn't shout him off, just let him have the wave of his life while I sat in the pocket. Best weekend of waves for me ever in Australia, as good as an indo session just trying to share the stoke. I'll shut the fuck up next time it gets that good maybe in a couple of years.
