Watch: The Occ-cast with Billy Kemper
I've found that more than anything, enjoyment of the Occ-Casts, of which there's now been 39 episodes, depends on your mood.
Take this latest one with Billy Kemper for example: I was prepared to dismiss it, give it short shrift, mainly due to my only prior exposure with Billy being filled with macho cliches. Could I stand an hour of that?
But instead the two sit down on rickety camp stools, and after a brief bout of mutual pocket-pissing, settle into an engaged but not animated discussion about big waves. And they dragged me with them. No hilarious tales nor over the top chest-beating, but plenty of authenticity from a guy that appears very comfortable in his skin.
Maybe you'll be in the mood for it, maybe not, but I'm gonna call it one of the better Occ-Casts yet.

Yes, great podcast.
That was awesome, Kemper is inspirational, eloquent and a great role model, best occ cast yet in my opinion.
Quite enjoyed it as well.
Ok billy really came off sounding pretty respectful.
Loved occ's waimea story also.
way the best one in my view. apart from "life lessons" (which is significant) - the idea of him and his peer group going rail-grab for rail grab at a code red swell in tahiti is very exciting to me. also, no disrespect to anyone - clearly for people like him Peahi' is in a whole different league to riding the biggest face wave at Nazare - which is a matter of fact as to whats going to happen due to Nazare's unique bathymetrics.
Billy Kemper. Keeping it real. RESPECT!! Great work Occ.
Occ is just a classic isn’t he
Occy just let him talk with few interruptions which was great.
Nazarre is interesting in competition more to see the whole scene dealing with a chaotic huge beachbreak - survival, timing, caught inside. The wave riding is less so and over time Nazarre needs to be 80ft to raise much interest as a watcher (sad in a way but we are over-exposed to surf these days).
Billy is right though that huge Jaws, Cloudbreak or even huge Uluwatu would be far more of a spectacle for the Big Wave tour. Fifteen to twenty foot Cloudbreak would be far more interesting than 60 foot peaks at Nazarre.
better waves.
Although paddling into Nazare was a whole lot more entertaining to watch than I thought it would be.
