Dale Staples has hitched a lift into the J'Bay Open, which starts tomorrow, by virtue of winning the JBU Supertrials contest last month. Fella has a lot of experience at J'Bay though he's only competed in one other CT event there - the 2010 J'Bay Pro where he was beaten by Bede Durbidge in Round 2.

This year he'll line up against JJF and Ian Gouveia in Round 1.

Here he is warming up last week.

AAHH JBAY, my fave of all time. back in the mid eighties it pumped and NO sharks. We surfed so many waves over there. Got JBay the best Ive ever seen it 8:10 ft from way out from MAGNAS. Remember seeing Shaun T absolutely tearing it apart from out the back all the way thru to and past Impossibles into TUBES and seeing him run back to do it all again. The only person I ve ever seen who can paddle out there no matter what size and make it look so easy and without loosing any position and then proceed to write his name in it freakin awesome. However, it was a pleasure watching Tony VDH surf out there as well, MR Cruise and Position ; RIP TVDH. definitely a bucket list wave !!!!! Kiff Long Lakka lines Eske bru !! Yoh Jordy, show em how bru !

Incredible waves and the bloke rips the shit out of them.

Fancy the thoughts going through your mind as you close your eyes , head on pillow , at the end of a days surfing like that.

The boy certainly knows the wave very well but for me that board just looked odd underneath his feet. Didn't allow him to fully commit to completing each turn and it seemed to get hung up the top of the wave more so than not.

Agree Don...but maybe the swell was slow weak. He's going to need some spark to take points off the big guns. At $7.00 to beat John John and Gouveia. About right.
