Swellnet Analysis

Here we are again, another shortened week and another long weekend. It seems like we've hardly got a week under out belt before another public holiday pops up to reduce the working week. And who's complaining?

This coming long weekend there's a bit of swell about the East Coast but unfortunately things won't really kick into gear until early next week.

SE Qld and northern NSW: Building levels of easterly trade-swell should be seen across the Gold Coast and Northern NSW from Friday, a touch more north in direction initially and with less than ideal easterly winds, improving and swinging more east-southeast to south-east over the weekend as the swell strengthens.

So we'll initially see poor onshore surf, improving across the protected bays and points through the weekend, but most likely Sunday afternoon. Rough estimates have the surf building to 3-4ft Saturday afternoon and to a larger 4-5ft by Sunday afternoon. At this stage early next week is looking the pick with a peak in easterly trade-swell and great winds for the points.

Southern NSW: We'll see a delay in the arrival of the east-northeast trade-swell with just small amounts of north-east windswell from Friday through Sunday with persistent north-east winds, lighter and more northerly early each morning.

Tassie East Coast: Some small north-northeast windswell is expected to build Friday and hold Saturday, but into Sunday and more so Monday larger levels of north-northeast windswell should be seen. We're looking at the surf peaking Monday to 4-5ft across north-east facing beaches and an afternoon offshore change is likely due, creating great conditions.

South Australia and Victoria: Persistent onshore winds across South Australia and Victoria all week will finally relent into the weekend. Unfortunately the swell will be minimal and on the ease so swell magnets across both states are the pick Saturday and Sunday.

The Mornington Peninsula should be peaky and easing from 3-4ft, cleaner and down from 2-3ft Sunday. Middleton is only due to ease from 2ft Saturday morning, tiny Sunday and best at Waits and Parsons all weekend. Watch out for an afternoon change Sunday though.

Southern Tasmania: Similar to Victoria, well see fading surf from 1-2ft Friday morning but with a dicey onshore wind, cleaner Saturday and Sunday though becoming tiny to flat.

Western Australia Onshore winds across the South West and a lack of swell to the north will create average surfing conditions Friday and Saturday. A new mid-period south-west swell is expected to build Saturday afternoon and peak Sunday as winds swing offshore from the south-east.

We're looking at 4-5ft+ sets across the Margaret River swell magnets, with tiny 1-1.5ft waves in Mandurah, only 1ft around Perth.

Have a great long weekend and be careful on the roads.

The article mentions it could of been a thresher shark, no mention of a pointer

Usual dumb non surfing reporter stuff, my mate was in the water and saw it, big white matey.
Today big white at North wall and big Tiger shark at Tallows. Here we go again.

Just to clarify MP I am the "dumb" reporter. Firstly I interviewed Dave Sharp who was one of the 6 surfers in the water and a longtime surf instructor in the region. He led the crew out of the water after they saw the shark. There was NO positive ID on it, except the speculation it was a thresher came from its strange behaviour. Whites don't flap around like that with small prey. Secondly, I am a surfer.

Hamish you are pretty lame on the surf reporter index, IE you are a kook and you did not report on anyone except for Dave who has no Ballina Shire surf coach credentials as he is registered with a Byron Surf School who has no options in the Ballina Shire. You are a kook and have no reason to question me. I actually have some push so you should shut the fuck up and pull your head in. Enough said.

MP, I was simply pointing out that I spoke to someone who was in the water at the time and there is no evidence that it was a white shark, and your word is no better than Dave Sharp's on that. But your overblown reaction is hugely exposing of your fragile ego. The fact you make a personal attack on me, not only calling me a kook, which is a school yard taunt (BTW I'm no hotshot surfer but I know how to catch a decent wave) and then going on to mention something completely unrelated (which by the way is a huge media beat up) as a way to attack me personally just shows your true colours. You are a bully, MP.
