As I understand it, some (but not all) vaccines are produced using cell cultures that originated from abortion materials some decades ago. They don't produce any demand for ongoing abortions, and the abortion material in any dose would be measured in the nanograms. So as far as I'm aware most church organizations support vaccines
(weighing up those issues with the moral imperative to protect others). Interesting also that scomo speaks as a (what some would call) fundementalist Christian.

Maybe rather than being compulsory, there should be some societal penalty for those who refuse on grounds of conscience, e.g. having to quarantine whenever you travel etc?

If you want voluntary vaccination you have to accept that the community has a right to protect itself from infection by placing limits on the freedoms of those who choose not to be vaccinated. Once the vaccine starts to be widely available, for example, it is near certain that many countries will insist on it as a condition of entry. It may also be obligatory in certain professions such as health care workers. I don't think it needs to be mandatory to be effective but you know in the grand scheme of things it is hardly a major human rights abuse. If it is mandatory there will be exemptions for medical reasons....and why you wouldn't want it for any other reason, beyond pie eyed stupidity, is hard to imagine.

In regard to your other post, no refugee has been locked up for 7 years, all are free to go at any time, all have turned down offers of resettlement in PNG or Cambodia, and no refugee on Manus or Nauru is locked up all have been free to come and go from centres at will for years, all even have the choice to live in the community, most on Nauru have chosen this option, those on Nauru can even apply to travel in the South Pacific region and those on Manus can also apply to travel within PNG.

I think the deal is that if there's no hiccups in the remaining trials, we'll get a license to manufacture the vaccine locally, and the government will cover the cost.

VL, it's a little more than nothing given some of the speculations (which, sure might just be fear-mongering) that certain nations would hoover up vaccine supplies and that IP might not be released.
