Vale...and thanks! “When the moon is shining the cripple becomes hungry for a walk” ― Chinua Achebe, Things Fall Apart
Just read this, Martin Phillipps of the Chills, died over the weekend. One if NZ's finest. Too young.
https://www.theage.com.au/culture/music/a-true-original-music-industry-m...
My personal favorite.
And the hits.
blackers swellnet Martin Phillipps tribute continues...
Can hear The Pixies in yer fav track Pink Frost...agree it's a very cool alt prog pop groove!
Considering were continuing a tribute to Alt NZ artist ~
Also that blackers send off with The Chills is exceptional
Reckon crew can go the yards to dig out a respectful parallel alternate homage to Martin.
Considering these pioneering NZ artists play a lead role in Oz indie set...least we can do!
Mostly coz Martin does actually have an alt / alt timeline...so that's pretty cool.
Plus reckon it would be cool to unearth his Alt Sounds...All say Aye...then let's Rock.
1980 First Band The Same : Frantic Drift (Martin on Guitar / Vocals with sister Rachel on Bass)
Song was later 'rerecorded' by The Chills
https://www.facebook.com/thechills/videos/the-same-frantic-drift-1980/22...
Click more & Read : The Same (Double Bill mates) Toy Love (tbb scored their LP back in the day! )
2 Insane Toy Love Trax ya just gotta hear...cue it tbb...OMG! Really!....can we do that...
Well it is his Stage Buddies + in keeping with his love of NZ local alt bands upbringing...so hell yeah!
Ok! Crew just scored a free upgrade to Deluxe NZ band mates Tribute Gig...far out...you won't regret that!
&list=OLAK5uy_moIYxJBuWr63Oo87Z-jujzna0uPMJMRrI&index=14
1980/81 : Yeah! This is exactly wot tbb is after...another Local band that inspired The Chills
The Chills / Martin played 'Iconic Keyboard' on The Clean's Tally Ho + also toured with them!
See also 1994...
1982 Can hear The Clean's similar groove in The Chills first & still epic track Rolling Moon
Crew will be surprised how cool this track is...let it run right thru as it gets better as rolls on...clever!
1993/94 The Chills contract expired & Martin rejoined The Clean Kilgour on Pop Art Toasters
Pop Art Toasters / Mini LP is a tribute to '60's Underground Purist Pop.
All trax are really professional & Uber cool...hard to pick 2/5 tracks ~ Just play the Whole Record
tbb gets doped out by Cure sounding forerunner TWCPAEB (I won't hurt you)...and this band aces it.
Play this tribute first to better understand why yer madly hunting down the original masterpiece.

Nice TBB, a fine tribute to an amazingly diverse musician. One more from me. Gives me the chills every time.
Tim Bowden, This Day Tonight producer, Backchat presenter, bloody good author, too, passed away on the weekend. https://www.abc.net.au/listen/programs/latenightlive/tim-bowden-a-life/1...
basesix tribute to Tim Bowden continues...
Tim gets a little bit naughty & has a bit of fun with The Late Show Special.
Tim's extraordinary retelling of a 1966 US Marines Search'n'Destroy Mission...
Might need a USB Stick for that one Tim...Strewth mate...Salute the Oz Legend!
Tells it as it is...will be missed & need more like him!
^ shit, TBB, usb indeed, that's amazing. noddys and all.
'not a camera man, JUST a marine, a colonel' that died. telling of tim's loyalties.
his love for neil davis' maniac-journo-ism comes through in his book about neil.
(the above interview reinforces the question, 'given his love for that combat adrenalin,
would neil have been a soldier, if there weren't soldiers to document?')
R.I.P Sergio Mendes was renowned for reworking tunes into hip swinging groovy mood enhancers.
Thought we could tribute a few sweet originals with respect.
Crew salute a beautiful Surf Song "Wave" (English Lyrics / Vocals) Includes Party Wave...*Sandpipers!
https://secondhandsongs.com/performance/23107
The Frog sounds cool in it's native habitat
First Mystery Cover...song is so cool...tributes Brazilian Samba songstress Elis Regina
Beatles ~ Day Tripper goes all the way with Eartha Kitt...that certainly saves a trip out.
Brasil'66 was Sergio's coolest era & this track was the first true Intercontinental Groove.
Hey everybody! Just stop what yer doing...Let's Conga...(Oldschool drunken lazy Exotic Flashdance!)
Most likely illegal nowadays!
Most would be happy with that but Sergio was after cred from the original composer...how did that go...
This 1979 Jam is very special as Sergio tributes original composer Jorge Ben Jor on Vocals / Guitar.
Definition of Pure Joy...Vibes man, soaring high into the sky with Sergio's Dream Team!

A particularly Melbourne kind of character. His career couldn't have had the same longevity in Sydney, where there's a little too much sun to sustain the nihilism. Just a theory anyway.
Saw him in Sydney with NO at the Phoenician Club around the time of 'Once we were scum, now we are gods'. Was kinda surprised when he paired off with Michael Hutchence for MaxQ. Had the same reaction when another famous dark Melbournian paired off with Kylie.
"too much sun to sustain the nihilism". Hah, yes, I heard Dave Warner talking about that early period. Sydney bands and the like would come down to gig, all uniforms and hard substances, while the locals were like hobos, buzzing on cough syrup. Simple times.
BTW the sun does shine here. Nihilism is just a state of mind. Chris Bailey and Ed K were amongst the most negative and morose people I have ever seen live.
RIP Phil Lesh....
