Hi Mark
Boards look great! Can you tell us why the pros are riding such short boards in big waves now?
In old days, 7ft plus boards would have been the go at Cloudbreak on final day. Can an ave surfer like me (53 yo young) expect to ride short boards in big waves ?
some guys are lovin the manouverability of the shorter boards in the bigger stuff, surfing has changed and guys sacrifice the length for the addition of responsiveness and manouverability...
Great boards as always Mark,
Glad to hear you are still stoked on the mini sims. I made one after reading your posts on swaylocks, 5ft neat, with twin glass on keels. Sure is different, but still fun.
Cheers
good stuff EVO, the minis are super fun...keys are to have the length and rocker just right, too much rocker and the donw wanna plane and give the speed ya need, and too short, they wont draw out a turn....fins gotta be big and right back too...actualy quite a bit to getting em just right.....super fun design and I want to make more and ride more versions.....been doin quite a few quad dim-SIMs lately too
How are those mini Simmons meant to be ridden? Are they very different to the twin wide swallow fishes or do you still ride them flat and low in 2-4ft pointbreaks- bent knees kind of. Are they meant for swooping turns or what? With fins further back does this make them tighter through turns or looser?
They look like a fun shape. Havent seen much of them though, anyone got any links for some footage?
Actually just found a vid of Dane at rincon on an Mini simmons. Looks real fun.
Whose is the MP stick, MP?
Groundswell, they ride surprisingly like a normal board, I surf mine similar to a shorty but with a bit more flow and rail use...the big fins ( if its a twin keel ) give a lot of hold and drive....I really enjoy them, more than the typical 80's style twinnies and more than traditional fish too....gotta get them at the right length though....have surfed mine in 1-5 ft, they like waves that run and you can get a bit of flow going and late drops aren't they favourite....but super fun, more people should try them....better than fish and look how popular fish were not that long ago...
the MP is owned by Carl Tanner Stu.....
I surf my mini simms (5ft neat)whenever the waves are fullish and have gone out in over head high days at Narrowneck. The volume helps you get into them early, kinda like a mal, but without the wind resistance of the extra 4ft of board in front of the pivot point.
My favourite is the cove at Burleigh. You can work up some speed and go through to the inner rockbreak.
I like em a lot, but I personally wouldn't say mine go anything like a mal mate...try to keep em super lively and manouverable, but still lotsa drive with flat rockers and big drivey keels...and the easy paddle with quite a bit of volume without going too thick.....
here's a recent B-52 I did for my grommy and with his artwork on it...5'5 1/2" x 18" x 2 7/16"...24 ltrs coz he needs a bit of extra foam coz he misses too many waves....
Hey Mark do you do repairs? Cheers, Reece
Love the spray on that one.

What's the deal with the FCS plugs on the rear fin? Looks like you've got a few there.
centre fin adjustment.
Yeah but shit, looks like there's 18 inches of adjustment there. Lotta room to play.
finbox would be better, adjustments as little as 5 mm can make a difference.
not sure what ya mean...the MP3's have the fin box and this Fat-Beaver has quad plugs only...???
just zoomed in on the pic,the one your holding looks like it has a series of plugs in line but is obviously a fin box, correct ?
Ha ha...that's exactly what I thought too, Udo. Early morning, pre-coffee vision had me seeing about 8 FCS plugs in a row.
Never mind MP. Carry on....
why are there pics missing from this page now ? the batch of MP3s seem to have vanished.??? new site stuff ???
Looks good Mark. Glad you are able to replicate MP's. they look pretty fun too.
some might say I am abusing the forums for self promo, I say its sharing what I love to do...
