Hate Trump all you like, but the guy is very strategic, he didn't become president again just by chance, he has some plan or strategy in place.
Again im not saying whatever he is doing is going to work, nobody really knows.
But i am interested in trying to understand what it is and listening to those that are much smarter than any of us here explaining what his strategy might be.
There is quite a few decent videos giving their take's now.
If you dont want to watch the whole video watch from 7:50 onwards (before that it was mostly just looking at how the Tariffs are calculated)
Indo, Can you explain ….” economics, but i do know that shit you support like catching fish in one country and sending it to another to be processed only to be sent back to the country caught in to be sold, is just plain fucking stupid and could be prevented with basic targeted tariffs,”
What you mean/know? I can’t get my head around what you are saying you know? What could be prevented? It’s all a jumble that makes no sense.
Clarify it can you?

It may be stupid but it's also free market orthodoxy which you've voted for and argued for on here since you began commenting. Minimal regulation, no government intervention, market decides yada yada yada...but now without a hint of irony you're calling it stupid.

Dude we have been over this before.
In an ideal world you catch the fish in one country you process it in that country, and then you sell it in that country, if you have excess you then sell it to other countries.
But in a crazy fucked up world you have shit like this happening.
"Caught in New Zealand, crumbed in China and packed here in Australia:
'Ridiculous' journey of this Coles fish which travelled 20,000km to end up on supermarket shelf
This is the extravagant journey of a Coles crumbed dory fillet
It was caught by New Zealand fisherman
Then it was shipped to China to be crumbed
And finally, was packaged and sold in Australia
Coles says it tries to source fish locally"

To combat this you create disincentives with tariffs, and yes it means you dont get everything dirt cheap.
BTW. Tarrif's in this circumstance would be targeted, what Trump is doing and trying to achieve is much different and complex and about creating a major reset, it's a much different conversation.

But then again no surprise there.

You are using extremes now…not at all what I have said. You talk about others misquoting you yet here you are doing exactly the same to me. All to justify your lack of knowledge and as an excuse to not answer a question.
Lobsters, Maine, Canada, within a very short geographic location…but divided by a border. And your fix was the US should start their own processing plant.

Na indo, you think you know, that is the difference.....

….looks to be.
Is not a valid explanation of any sort of plan.

‘A giant reboot of the system’
Seems like something that would need to be planned, probably modelled and tested, etc etc. But you know that HASN’T happened at all. So, if this is what you think it is, and you’re happy with the objective, do you think the implementation might be a little…. Reckless?
The hilarious thing about this ‘reboot’ is that what the new system is supposed to look like hasn’t been explained to anyone.
I don’t think it’s going to look anything like what the new class of cheerleaders think it will.
Which I’m assuming is “kinda like the current one where I have shiny things like phones and big cars and TVs and go on holidays and can buy new fashionable clothes every year, but only better and I’m ‘richer’ and stuff, and there are won’t be any wars except the ones that we want in conveniently faraway shithole places full of different coloured people and we’ll just bomb them anyway”
But it won’t be anything like that and the dumb chucklefucks are too ideologically blinded to realise that putting the whole system (that the US created and largely benefits the US more than any other single country) into the blender is not something that has been planned out in any strategic sense and no one can actually predict what the end state is going to be - except that it is unlikely to deliver what the current system has.
But maybe eggs will be cheaper at some point?

You can’t just walk in and turn the power on and boom..you have a manufacturing facility.
Old redundant and unused machinery won’t just magically restart. Most aged machinery is past its use by date.
So, who do you think will have the skills to work in these facilities? Where do you think the required new machinery will come from? Where will the engineers that set up the factories come from? Where will the maintenance engineers that keep the factories running come from? Who has the required skills to train operators and where will they come from? What about material change of use laws? What about the raw product needed to keep the new facilities running, where will that come from? All this to basically supply a domestic market as Trump has fucked any relationships with export markets…no one will be buying Made in USA now.
It’s more complex than what you appear to acknowledge or even understand.
Would love your insight into the above question.

Agreed.
And you would think the ramifications of the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act would give the average wanna be economist a rough idea of what was likely to happen.

The damage to the world economy caused by Trumps ignorance and vanity in his first 75 days is worse than the covid pandemic. He has started a trade war that he may well lose.
If Kamala had won, we would have seen her a few times smiling and spreading upbeat optimistic views for the future, the world would be business as usual, and my hard earned retirement super would be going up instead of being down about 35k.

I have no strong opinion on either of these blokes, but there's some interesting discussion on the intent and possible outcomes of Trump's trade policies.

Just bringing this to the fore. Yet another example of how thin skinned our resident cretinous cunt is. Loves to give, it cries when he gets it. Hope you’re day is going absolutely shithouse Indo.
Indo also supports this sort of behaviour from Israel.

^^ True to form for these pseudo falsely self proclaimed (and serving) conservatives who are the fiercest defenders of the law, the courts, political conventions and societal and commercial norms right up to the second it doesn’t suit them politically, culturally or economically. Politically reactionary mixed with Christian (oxymoron) nationalism, forever loose with the truth, whatever it takes, what they said yesterday or will say tomorrow doesn’t matter. In Australia Morrison perfected it to an art form, in the UK we saw it with Brexit and now Trump. Yep, no surprise @info is and @opti are on board!

If Kamala had won, we would have seen her a few times smiling and spreading upbeat optimistic views for the future, the world would be business as usual, and my hard earned retirement super would be going up instead of being down about 35k.
I don't post much but have to comment on the fact that Trumps actions are contributing to the AUD tanking. Has hit a 5 year low now and could keep going down. Seeing that a LOT of goods are imported into Australia this will just cause prices to rise and add more pressure on cost of living and add pressure on small business. This will drive inflation and interest rates will stay put or could potentially rise again.
Ironically, the Trump lovers will be moaning about the cost of living and likely blaming the Aussie Govt.
I understand to some degree what Trump is trying to achieve but shifts in economic/financial policy need to be done incrementally to allow adjustments and management to not create major upheavals in markets(stockmarkets/Super funds) as is now happening. No wonder he's gone bust in his own businesses if this his MO.
As for the Trump lovers here, don't cry if and when the Aussie economy turns to custard.......

Jeez, wish I had more time on my hands to post here. This thread is a ripper ATM. Just had a read through, the Americans @esco and @Mick66, @etarip, @GuySmiley, @CMC, @andt mac, and Mr. @Stu himself, plenty more, some great commentary all you guys.
I've got a lot to say but no time to write it right now. Don't think I need to. You guys have it pretty covered. Happy to just read some great stuff.
Even @Roady, on fire mate.
Just wanted to say it's a great read.
I'll be back, soon I hope.
Donald Duck Trump is going well isn't he? Bibi the not a Hebrew Pole still killing kids and clearing land for real estate developers and settlers in the Levant..
Eh @Indo.?..you know Economics and tariffs too?... no end to your "expertise", Those podcasts you listen to are really doing it for you, PhD in podcasts too? Go hard mate.
Great thread.

Sprouts video was very interesting….did you watch it?…it explains a lot and makes very good sense.
There is method in the supposed madness…..take note Australia..
Trillions yes trillions already pledged into US manufacturing which by the way is a country that doesn't really need anyone…
…Watch in awe as companies move from China to the U.S.
Interesting times….pain at first but if it works….great gain.

All talk.

As i noted a few weeks ago and was rubbished by some, the protests, will grow, are growing and are going to be hard to ignore for too long without either listening and bending to the will of the protesters, or yep, shoot em down and lock em up. Not hard to imagine the latter, especially if he gets his MAGA mob into a salivating murderous mentality....which won't be hard as history has shown.
Great to see all walks of life turning out and being heard.

for now...

he sees it like me, trump tariffs are an 'art of the deal' shot at the moon...
that will likely land somewhere more reasonable
like all things trumpy, you have to read between the lines, edit the ridiculous, and make some assumptions...
or you will lose your shit
bessent was (overtly) handing out the clues yesterday, basically saying... 'calm down, let it sink in, ...don't instantly retaliate... then get on the phone...'
seems the smart players are doing just that
(whilst the media whip up a storm of people losing their shit...
again...)

That type of talk by southern is only counter productive and inciting violence.
The people voted for change….let the change happen and ignore the negative divisive talk by troublemakers.
Why would the dems etc want to stir people up and start a civil war between people when the people protesting may possibly be a lot better off in a years time……the reason is they were hopeless in govt and still are.
They lost the vote….big spending cuts made to bring in money to support the U.S. during the radical changes. They need it now for the transition.
Nearly 4 trillion dollars already committed to the new manufacturing America and they have just got started….
Money pouring in from all over the world.
Jobs lost now in public service etc will be new jobs in the future.
The people have to be patient…..too many experts … not enough patience.

oh, wow. so is this what the orange glamour dust is about.. rankled bemoaners and indignant curmudgeons get some time in the sun, reborn as patient, calm-speak finger wagglers.. haha, awesome.

Come on now Opti.
That's a bit extreme even by your stringent religous based views.
Are you saying protests should be banned now?
The pinnacle of democracy is having a voice.
And you're calling that divisive and inciting violence....incidentally the thing Trumps MAGA mob did.
That sounds pretty fucken delusional to me mate.....and the same sort of gaslighting that lets Trump get away with the shit he gets away with...with fools like yourself.

for the record, I think etarip's summary is probably spot on
but we have a choice...
the US had a choice...
you want more of the same?
more reckless printing of money to prop the old creaking lemon?
...printing of money that directly transfers (more) wealth to the top, whilst normies just get their wealth diluted?
you want to keep enriching china?
whilst white-anting all the wealth at home?
and perhaps the most important question...
you really want xi and friends as your ruler and overlords?
...or you want to back, and take a bet on, some domestic bad billionaire bros at home?
...being possibly (definitely) a bit more benevolent in your overlording......
thats 'definitely' for any one who's been paying attention
whether it works?
who wins the long game?
is anyone's guess...
but the choice is simple really
whichever one you choose...

People voted for change, but that change should be through the constraints of the US constitution, which Trump and his minions are pissing on.

The wildest hypocrisy is all the lefties are now out here pushin' for free trade and zero tariffs. LMAO. ClownWorld.

Oh
The kind of clown world where weirdos pretend they’re from america, imitate a floridian dude drawl and harp on as though they are some yankee fella when they’re not…
Hmmm.

"Trillions of dollars" and "money poring in from all over the world" can you elaborate on that??
For what it's worth I don't consider myself an expert in anything but I do have 50 years of design and manufacturing experience and the last 25 of those running my own show.
Have dealt with manufacturing firms in UK, Germany and China after Australia lost it ability to remain competitive in the global market.
My experience tells me even if the US has plenty of money, if you don't have all the required raw materials and good partners to deliver those then it will be a monumental task and if you think it will all happen in 5 mins....good luck with that.
Considering the US is probably on the nose of many other countries at the moment they will struggle if they don't have raw materials and expertise.
I think Roadkill touched upon it earlier but there are many stages to get through before you have a proven finished product. This guy has less than 4 years (unless he appoints himself lifetime ruler like his mate Vlad) not a lot of time. That's reality mate but you seem to like to wave that USA flag and believe what you read and hear to suit your perspective.

haha, yep. nice we've got a couple of real USA citizens. Hope the new ones are dinkum ; )
'Lefties' I know are finding it hilarious but concerning. And as is the 'lefty' way
they are concerned that there's vulnerable people playing grist to the maga mill.
Can't believe Aus is divided as to whether Trump's a wanker or not, and there's clowns
championing an 'anything is better than what was happening' Joker manifesto.

Obviously you will have facts and real evidence of this “trillions yes trillions”?
note…Trump saying it is not evidence.
Ps, I don’t expect a reply as facts are not a strong point of yours.

Yep it's what people voted for, suggesting a government should "bend to the will of protestors" over the wishes of voters is very silly.
Protest are fine if they keep peaceful, the problem is in the USA as we know they can turn violent, looting, burning shit down etc
