Winter Swells Ignite Across Southern States
But there is good news ahead. The much discussed Long Wave Trough (info here) is about to enter a strengthening phase in the Southern Ocean, and we're looking at two to three weeks of heavy swell activity for the southern states.

Luxury Holiday
The last few times that Swellnet forecaster, Craig Brokensha, has taken annual leave it's coincided with great surf on the East Coast. 'Good timing,' you might say and you'd be kind've right. Rather than spending his holidays here on the East Coast however, Craig's been spending it a few thousand k's away where he's also getting good waves minus the East Coast crowds.

Tsunami: Approaching the Speed of Sound
So while a tsunami with a height of one metre doesn't sound threatening, its forward speed of 220 metres per second can cause catastrophic damage as the surge moves inland for many minutes behind the initial impact.
Early Bells forecast: Fine but not all time
There'll be plenty of swell, but not from Bells' ideal direction.
Long Wave Trough - The Second Coming
Victorian surfers have just come off the back of one of the worst summers in recent history, thanks to persistent south-easterly winds and small swells. But now with the change of seasons the Southern Ocean has fired up in a big way; an oversized south-westerly groundswell is expected to make landfall this Friday and Saturday.

East meets South
Yesterday in Sydney surfers woke to a mid-size east swell breaking under flawless offshore conditions. Within an hour of sunrise, however, a gusty southerly change shut down many of the options and sent surfers scurrying. There are a few spots in Sydney that respond to a straight east swell and southerly wind, Manly being one of them. From Queenscliff in the north to Winki in the south the swell/wind combo proved a good mix for locals and travellers alike.
Swellnet forecaster and part-time photographer, Craig Brokensha, caught some of the action.
