The Maldives: Best of 2013

The southern Indian Ocean storm track is easing and with it all the waves that depend on its seasonal burst. With the season over it's high time to check on the highlights from the Maldives.

Maldives Surf Report - September

There’s really not much that I can say about September that I didn’t say in August - it was a very good month. The first week set the pace. It started with the Maldivian staple: 2-4ft of clean S/SE swell and light off-shores that enabled us to surf all the waves in the area.

Maldives Report - July

The following report is by Richard Kotch / World Surfaris.

Many years ago I spent far too much time pondering the meaning of life and subsequently became quite interested in Buddhism. My meditation teacher at the time placed a great deal of emphasis on finding the middle path and eliminating the highs and lows from life. Mr. Lama would have been most unimpressed with July in the Maldives!

Maldives June Swell Report

By Richard Kotch / World Surfaris

Five weeks is a long time in surfing, so writing a monthly summary is quite a challenge but it helps that I shoot photos every day, and that very little actually changed out here this month!

Maldives April Swell Report

Report presented by World Surfaris.

This is possibly the easiest swell report I've ever had to write! We've been here at Hudhuranfushi in the Maldives for the last three weeks and can happily report there's been waves every day. As is typical for early season the waves have not been big but conditions have been incredible with sheet glass mornings, light offshore afternoons and golden, glassy evenings.

Maldives Swell Report

The day's are getting shorter and the water getting cooler, winter is drawing near. It's about now that surfers start thinking of warmer climes and for many that means the warm-water perfection of The Maldives.

First Strike

Two weeks ago a deep red smudge appeared on forecast charts of the Western Pacific. A low spinning off the Kamchatka Peninsula was set to rapidly deepen and send lines of swell to every exposed coastline from Papua New Guinea to the US mainland. The Eddie Aikau Invitational was put on alert, the Red Bull Jaws event too. Hawaiian big wave surfers were watching the storm intently, as were mainland counterparts and the organisers of the Nelscott Reef Big Wave Challenge and the Mavericks Invitational. Everyone was buzzing on the arrival of the swell.

P-Pass: December Report

December was been a good month here in Pohnpei. Looking back through my files I see that the first three weeks of the month had waves every day – ranging from excellent to average with very few surfers on the island. Then there was a week of not much surf but a whole lot of fish before the swell kicked in again to see out 2012 with an orgy of tube riding. Good times!
