The Maldives: Best of 2013
The southern Indian Ocean storm track is easing and with it all the waves that depend upon its seasonal burst. Sure, you can still get waves in the Maldives, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka during the off season but don't expect the same intensity or consistency, or the same weather.
So with the season over it's high time to check on the highlights from the Maldives. Photographer Richard Kotch, working on behalf of World Surfaris, delivered a monthly report and gallery to Swellnet and we've selected the best of those photos.
If you're considering the Maldives for next season World Surfaris have been nominated ‘Official Surf Operations Managers’ for Hudhuranfushi Resort. The long lefts of Lohis break offshore from Hudhuranfushi and there's been disputes in recent times over surf crowding. A recently implemented Surfer Management Plan aims to cap surfer numbers and Hudhuranfushi guests have access to the limited number of surf passes to access Lohi's.
World Surfaris Founder and Managing Director, Shaun Levings, said, "Limiting surfer numbers staying on the island shows the resort’s dedication to ensuring guests catch plenty of waves and there is a good vibe."
Levings added that guests of Hudhuranfushi are also able to access those surrounding breaks. “There are six other world class waves in the region, including Cokes and Jails, both within twenty minutes of the resort, in a boat escorted by one of the four resident surf guides.”
Levings said the initiative is all about choice. “Do you want to go to a budget surf camp and fight for waves, or pay a little bit more and have luxury and harmony?”
