Maldives June Swell Report
By Richard Kotch / World Surfaris
Five weeks is a long time in surfing, so writing a monthly summary is quite a challenge but it helps that I shoot photos every day, and that very little actually changed out here this month!
Looking back at my thirty files of June, I see that the first day of the month had storms and torrential rain that flooded the island, then the second was one of the most beautiful days I've seen out here, with clear skies and fun little waves. From the third to the sixteenth we had consistent 3-5 foot waves from the S/SE every single day.
The seventeenth was almost totally flat, but by the eighteenth there was fun little waves again! The next two weeks were similar to the first in that we had OK, mid-sized waves every day but the wind persisted out of the W/SW with just too much S in it for optimum conditions. However, the rights at Jails and Sultans, while typically a bit 'wonky' on the outside, had some pristine walls through the more sheltered inside sections. On the days when the wind veered straight S or even SE we found sheltered little corners inside the lefts of Honkies and Chickens and if you found the cleaner second or third wave of the set it was surprisingly good.
So June was very consistent, but also consistently windy. Crowds were lighter than May and the vibe in the water has been really good. Like clockwork the wind switched to the W/NW on the first of July and we have enjoyed some really good days at Cokes and Chickens since then.
Cheers for now, Rich. Check the World Surfaris website for specials.
