Putting Theory Into Practice

When a large swell accompanied by good winds is lining up somewhere around the country, I can't help but get excited visualising the numerous breaks that would be going off when I prepare the forecast notes. My excitement levels are amplified to another level when the forecast region is local! Last week was one of those week's where I couldn't wait until Friday afternoon to clock off from work, pack the car and head down the NSW South Coast. Prior commitments limited my trip to only half a day, but within those six hours I saw numerous waves going unridden on a weekend where everywhere was pumping.

Down South

Yesterday, the East Coast was hit by a long-period south swell that combined with bluebird conditions. Darryl 'Boogs' Vandepolder (on the green board) hit the open road and managed to score a pair of great barrels at a rarely surfed reef. Photos by Craig Brokensha.

One Of Those Days Pt. 1

Sydney is the sort of place that hardly ever gets perfect waves. Long stretches of time, with waves measuring in quality from good to grim, are endured by the sizeable surfing population in the hope that someday soon it'll get perfect again.

Surgical Strike Pt. 1

Friday looked the biggest, while Saturday would see better winds as the swell eased. Forecasts filed, car packed, and it was time to do a quick dash out of Adelaide. They were stepping off into 6ft bombs that were throwing as wide as they were tall onto a dangerously shallow sandbank. Not many were made, but the guys would have visions of perfect cylinders etched into the back of their minds.

No Place Like Home

My profession as a surf forecaster involves scouring weather maps day after day, keeping abreast of all the swells occurring across the country. Whilst looking at the weather maps last week I saw a pattern evolving over my home state of South Australia and it instantly got me excited.

Fully Sick

A funny thing happened on the way to the chemist... After putting up his East Coast notes last Friday Swellnet forecaster, Craig Brokensha, immediately developed a cough.

Battlefield Sydney

Beautiful, lined up swell from the south...check Crisp wind from the west...check On a sunny weekend with people walking poodles along the shoreline, And lycra-clad power walkers patrolling the back blocks...check and check There's some great waves out there, no doubt about that, but you'll have to battle a platoon of eager warriors for a slice of Battlefield Sydney.
