Watch: Barron Mamiya // Mind

Swellnet Dispatch

Though he brings a freesurf approach to the wave, Barron Mamiya wants his performance affirmed by a CT spot. The young Hawaiian demands nothing less.

This seven minute clip mixes Mamiya's "go big" combustability - the Cloudbreak session being a standout - with a frank talk about expectation: the stress he places on himself to succeed. There's a bit of the tortured artist about Mamiya. He's blessed with potential, no doubt about it, but the seeds of doubt find fertile soil in his mind.

The backside double-handed stall at 1:38 is top shelf. Same move is shown at 2:13 but from the channel.

He's one to watch.

Fuck he’s good..
I mentioned during the pipe comp that he reminds me of Bruce Irons when he sets up then rides the tube. So casual

Dudes a shredlord for sure
I Like how he reminds himself to remind himself why he started surfing.
If ya ain't smiling after waves like he's getting there is something seriously wrong.
Good watch

I couldn’t do an air to save my life, and at first especially the air reverses really had my attention. There’s no doubt that they are both technical and spectacular, but something I heard Cristian Fletcher say recently on a Stab podcast about airs .

He mentioned airs in recent history hadn’t really progressed past just being a forward spin or air reverse, yes the surfers are grabbing and going to the air no hands so to speak a lot more often and going higher but essentially that’s taking the rider off the wave where quiet frankly the real surfing gets done.

That said Mamiya seems like the full package and let’s face it he does obviously have a good solid rail game and clearly knows how to thread a barrel. One other thing i notice in this clip is the lack of volume in is board? It could be just an optical illusion? But jeez it seems to be a bit chattery through the more drawn out bottom hand turns ?imagine the water this lad could displace with a slightly longer board. Think JJF on his win at Main Break.

That’s my 2 cents and coming from your average punter probably doesn’t say much . In all it was a great clip it just lost me after the second or third air.

JJF didn't ride a long board at Margaret's that year he killed it. He is 6'1, 79-80kg and rode a 6'2 x 18.75 x 2.5 at 29L.

Which is pretty standard. I'm the same weight and also ride 29L

Got his fringe flick claim down. Be good to see him surf bald, that extra second.

Yeah great stuff.

Solid waves too. Love that stuff compared to a thousand airs in cross shore shit.

Wow. How good is he? Pretty raw surfing, can only imagine what he’ll be like in a couple of years. Hopefully he doesn’t over think things. Certainly gets some sets at pipe too!
Reckon he’d pip Jack Robbo in the overall stakes on account of his rail game. Tubes and airs they tie.
Hawaiians starting to get real strong competitively (JJF, Zeke, Seebass, Seth Moniz).

A young surfer, surfing with such aggression....nice. I really enjoyed the determination and energy. Good luck fella.

Late take off under the lip to soul arch to being blown out standing upright at 5:29.
I'd trade a thousand backside airs for that skill level.
Thats art....

"seeds of doubt find fertile soil in his mind" This is due to a distinct lack of chest hair. While on that topic are any CTer's blessed with the joy growing into a full Mohair Chest Rug? Think even Pottz has done a bit of manscaping.

Fucken helll....how good are these young Hawaiians coming through over the last couple of years. This lad, the Moniz bro's, the Florence bro's, etc...etc. Best generation i've seen coming through from the islands in a very long time.

Thought "that barrel" at the Volcom Pro was extraordinary, but this clip didn't do much for me. Not even close to JJF level.

Expect much better from him.
