Tomo explains the theory underpinning the Sci-Fi - video
"As a designer I've really looked to different areas to inspire myself to look deeper," says Tomo about the esoteric theories that inspire him, including those incorporated in his Sci-Fi, the board Stu Kennedy road to success at Snapper Rocks.

Lateralus (also mirrors Fibonacci sequence):
"As below, so above and beyond, I imagine
Drawn beyond the lines of reason.
Push the envelope. Watch it bend.
Over thinking, over analyzing separates the body from the mind.
Withering my intuition, missing opportunities and I must
Feed my will to feel my moment drawing way outside the lines.
...And following our will and wind we may just go where no one's been.
We'll ride the spiral to the end and may just go where no one's been.
Spiral out. Keep going"
Kind of apt for this situation?
Pardon me for the indulgence...
No no no mate just a pie and sauce........ Giddyup !!
notice the interview was done at Bells , but all the footage was at 2' Snapper , Board didn't look so good at Bells , but at least Tomo has questioned the current surfboard designs.
Agree sharkey they didn't cut through Bells at all. The width in the tail would be a problem with the extra push. The waves for snapper were gutless by all accounts.
About time someone is questioning the status quo in board designs. Tomo's MPH boards feel completely different - kind of like levitating - and they go so fking quick! Really interesting how he packs so much volume into such a small space. I'm 100kg, and am very comfortably riding a Tomo Evo 5'10 in most conditions.
Great to see him using some of natures magic numbers - around us every where. There is no reason variations of this design cannot be adjusted for places , like Bells or whatever. And for that matter the surfer himself, his weight and where he predominately surfs - his quiver. Great stuff.
Beagle what model Tomo are you riding ?
It's the shovel-nosed little Evo model. Haven't surfed it in waves with real juice yet, but it surfs like a board that's a hell of a lot longer. Although at my weight, anything that floats that doesn't turn like the Queen Mary counts as a good board! As I said, the 'levitating' feel is really quite unique - not sure if that's a consequence of the firewire construction, or the unusual shape (or both).
Read again udo , evo he says
Yep I shouldn't speed read....anyone on your stretch of coast surf Tomo boards Caml ?
Tomo if you read this I had a lot of success when I put my peak volume and apex of rocker back 61.8% from the nose rather than the 50% most boards seem to have. Worked for me with an area tail and vee before concaving, but I'm pretty back foot anyway, might not work for someone who surfs off the front foot. Golden ratio works in nature, aesthetics, investment markets, histories of pricing etc etc. Love how the Sci Fi looked under the feet of Stu at Snapper, very satisfying to see something with flyers win in the pro setting
I like the look of that probably more than anything put out under the Tomo label.
But have not yet ridden one of his weird creations.
For a short board for summer/ most Sydney conditions that looks like a lot of fun.
But yeah, no idea how I would go on it.
Not the Sci-Fi but the Omi.
Surfs damn good for a shaper.

jarrodwhite9 insta - couple of pics riding a Omni at cloudbreak.
here ya go indo
Nice install of the quad plugs on the channel line.
Like to own a Sci - Fi ?
as new 6ft Sci-Fi Byron Bay Gumtree $785 with tailpad ....save yourself $200 or more !
Stuart Darcy has made an intersting li'l observation on IG. No accusation of impropriety, but check these photos of boards from Cole Surfboards. Specifically the tails and channels.

They sold quite a few of these in Japan. I always wanted to give this one a go. I do have an Aviso (hollow carbon fibre) Lost Round Nose Fish and am sad they (Aviso) didn't make it as a company. I rode it for 4 years straight and no dings, not even a compression. It then sat in storage and got flown around the world, i then buried the nose in the sand at a tiny beach break and cracked it. I suspect because i had exposed it to extreme air temp and pressure changes with out releasing the plug. the carbon fibre weave is thing of beauty and despite everyone worrying i never had a problem with wax, even in info.
Oooh... from 2007
Yeah, prolly should've added that bit - all shaped in 2007.
Cheers Udo.
look pretty sexy but the wax would melt off by the time you got from the carpark to the lineup
very sexy and wax was never a problem
Wow.
Cole himself put a post up a month ago as well.
Probably find Carcass was doing them way before 2001......Freeride ?
not exactly that but he's definitely been on that trip for a long time.
Hell of a lot of near new SciFi's on the secondhand market
anyone buy one ?
Interesting Udo. I'll go the Tomo route one day I suspect, but not yet. A lot of boards going on to the second hand market doesn't mean they are bad boards, but probably a good indicator that they don't work for the average mug.
I'll be hitting up Darcy for my next board on a recommendation from a friend.
After jumping from a vanguard to an evo I have to say I'm super impressed with the tomo evolution of board design. The Evo is something like no other that I've ever ridden. Super fast out on the face and flats and yet turns in a dime with little to no loss of speed. And this is riding it at a thruster. I am only imagine it as a quad.
