On the road with Mick and Joel - photos
"Never drive away from good waves."
That's the creed surfers should live by. However, it has a caveat:
"Except when the waves are better elsewhere."
So despite the Superbank being smack in the middle of a best-ever run of swell, Mick Fanning and Joel Parkinson drove - or in fact, flew - away from good waves to surf better waves elsewhere.
First stop was the south coast and a well populated ledge doing its thing under the weight of a six foot southerly groundswell. Then when the tide began to drop and wind edged onshore, they drove up the highway to surf Cape Solander.
All the while Ben Kiggins played paparazzi (though he ended up towing them into a few at the Cape which explains the lack of shots from there).
