Patagonia and The New Localism

This Spring, Patagonia will be travelling to 12 locations to promote the New Localism film tour.

You may have recently noticed a few film projects coming from Patagonia in which there is a focus to protect local areas. This driving force to acknowledge, support and give back to our own backyards is the momentum behind our campaign, The New Localism.

Our latest film, The More things change for which we will be holding the World premiere in Bondi, Australia on Wednesday 21st of October 2015, features Gerry Lopez on his return to Uluwatu.
Gerry Lopez first surfed Uluwatu in 1974. The fabled Balinese wave was pristine, magical, and empty. Gerry returned 40 years later to find it bustling, developed, and a different scene. He also found that the pristine local environment was straining to cope with the pressure of development. We hope to encourage people to help protect a place where surfers have long come for indo adventures and support Project Clean Uluwatu.

In developing the new campaign framework, Patagonia has drawn on two main sources of inspiration: the sports we love, which allow us to spend time in nature, and the grassroots activists working in their own communities to protect their piece of the planet, which Patagonia has supported for years through the grants program.

The New Localism campaign recognizes we can no longer pass through remote, wild places and trust they will remain that way. Brought to life through stories of ambassadors and activists, it engages our community to protect threatened places that are home to the sports that inspire our adventures and the products our company makes.

We’re all locals living in a global world and we all have a chance to make a difference.

During the tour, Patagonia will be telling stories through a series of films that inspire people to take action – centered around surfing, trail running, skiing and snowboarding and rock climbing.

For example, Patagonia will be showing Mile For Mile, a film that celebrates Patagonia National Park through the sport of trail running and asks customers to donate money to fund 50 miles of trails needed to complete the park (Patagonia is matching every donation). The Fisherman’s Son film tells the story of surf ambassador Ramon Navarro and his push to protect the culture and environment of the Chilean coast, Punta de Lobos.

And Jumbo Wild film covers a decades-long fight over a proposed ski resort in British Columbia; it features unprecedented documentation of all sides of a divisive issue bringing the passionate local fight to protect the Jumbo Valley to life for a global audience for the first time.

The main goal of the New Localism film tour is to use these global issues to inspire Australian & New Zealand people to protect the places they play and live in but also to support local environment activists and community groups.
Regardless of region, we are all locals with challenges in our backyard.

During the Film tour, Patagonia will be partnering with local groups and invite them to speak about their project or issue to raise awareness among the widest community.

Hi Patagonia,

A very tongue in cheek reminder that if you go west of the vico border there is place called South Australia and just after that is another called Western Australia.
