Shaun Tomson recreates famous Pipe board
Former Pipe Master Shaun Tomson has reunited with Hawaiian shaper Bill Barnfield to produce an exact replica of his 7’7” 1983 Hawaiian gun, designed specifically for big Pipeline.
The board was recreated from recently rediscovered design templates by Barnfield, and features an identical airbrushed zig zag design by the original artist Suzi Gillette.
The board is for sale on eBay with a starting bid of $1,000. All proceeds from the auction will go to the Santa Barbara Boys & Girls Club of which Tomson is a board member.
Swellnet isn't exactly sure what the Santa Barbara Boys & Girls Club do but we'd like to take this opportunity to wish them well, we'd also like to take this opportunity to run a photo of Tomson on the board in 1983 at big Pipe. The photo is by James Cassimus and still stands as one of the great surf photos.
“Photographer James Cassimus captured a moment in time that is frozen forever in my memory," Tomson has said of the photo. "I looked over the edge on that beast of a wave and thought I was going to die, but went anyway. It was one of the most radical drops of my life.”

Gonna buy one BB?
It presents a good argument for getting your board sprayed. A 'standard' Pipe drop becomes something else entirely when a hypercolour spray job raises the drama stakes.
A standard Pipe drop, eh Neville?
It's just an awesome shot, 30yrs later, still makes you go 'whoa'.
Waiting to see a photo of you taking a 'standard' drop Neville.....crickets chirping
