Dave Kalama and Jamie Mitchell talk story about Belharra and big waves
"I just knew I was in the right spot spot," says Jamie Mitchell about his 60-foot Belharra bomb. "So basically I just swung, put my head down, and paddled my arse off."
Listen to Mitchell and Dave Kalama as they kick back on Kalama's Hawaiian lanai and talk story.

great interview.....titanium nuts is a cool dude.
great clip and some good question answered by Jamie . I would have liked to ask him what sort of board he would have like to have in future , and also if he had his Patagonia vest fully inflated or semi inflated . there are actually four cannisters in that vest which can be deployed separately. that's why the Patagonia vest is the best of the couple of varieties. Jamie seems to have extra big hands , part of his natural physique that makes him the best paddler , he doesn't need webbed gloves !
Same. I was hoping that question was gonna come up.
Fascinating stuff. So Twiggy got the next wave on the head. 70 footer broke 10 feet in front of him....someone must have the photo of that one surely. Wonder where Shane was in the lineup as Jamie said he was too deep to go for his wave. No doubt he would have gone if he was in position.
Despite the difficulty of actually making a turn maybe Rowley is onto it with his 11 x 4
Here's the photo of Dorian trying to paddle down the wave that Jamie Mitchell eventually caught.
Dorian's got the crazy paddle trail, and Jamie is way inside about to turn and pounce!
mick , jamies board was 11ft . dorians apparently was 11'4 . not sure about twigs but I will find out . twig broke both his boards there and im guessing it was 11ft . after that he ordered a 12 ft x 23 x 4' 1/4 . so I think Rowley would want a bigger board for that sorta size surf if hes using a 11'0 in 20ft surf as seen on his recent video clip in Australia .
I think Stu has Rowley's dimensions. Apparently its on for Jaws tomorrow with crew flying in so will be interesting what craft will be in the water.
On a side note how are you going to travel with 12 foot boards?? They stopped Skindog Collins bringing his boards for Punta Galea comp.
Enter Vis , with his B52 ready to go ........
the man is b4 his time i tell ya ......
or alternatively the guys are going so long now with boards , that they could just possibly paddle to the events .... the fall back option if they don't have a month or two to spare getting there . is the " vis " option .... BYO parachutes ....
i know it was an interview , Jamie was probably answering more for the audience .... But i felt uncomfortable when jamie was trying to convey the shear size of teh waves to DK .... in all honesty i think Daves probably seen a few ... obviously not paddling , but he's been around ... nice guy too
Southey you always have something interesting to say , I did see vis on some popup ads today surfing the net ! ive heard he was paddling jaws late last year . just talking to wayne webster, vissers and twigs surfboard shaper extroadinaire who told me that and also that twig had a ten ft board, obviously undergunned (at belharra). the other one that broke has yet to be identified and reported for this thread .
mick maybe the board has to be made in the area and then stashed nearby ? target locations and boards already there ready to use for the modern big wave surfer .
Thats not a new concept though is it caml .... except usually people are only targeting one wave . When i was on rotto , i used to store boards all over the island . As often , wind would make it hard to ride out with more than one . or generally any board over 7-8ft was too hard to ride with full stop .
yes southey . just new for 12Ft boards instead of skis stashed about
Jamitchel could be the man for the job paddling the RIGHt . He doesnt mind a wipeout or 2
