Watch: Mid-winter Supertubos

With 6-to-8 feet of north-west swell and all day north-east winds, the 12th January was a belter at Peniche, Portugal.

"Supertubos doesn't deliver days like this often," said videographer Balint Hambalko. "It was the best I've seen for a long time."

After shooting all day, Balint saw very few turns but recorded hours worth of tube time from the likes of Gui Fonseca, Joao Chianca, Luis Perloiro, Marc Piwko, Gonzalo Montalvao, and many more rippers.

And for those wondering, the CT is due to stop at Supertubos in two months time - 15th March to be precise.

Yep, swell was 6'-8' from the NW, though Supertubos faces W/SW.

Yeah I was thinking 5' maybe the biggest just 6'. Must measure them different down here.

Checking the surf yesterday a bloke was telling me, ‘yesterday the swells energy was 100kJ and today is only 70’ ……..after nearly spitting my coffee out, I reminded him I had eyes.

PS - it’s a thing

That's a relevant point to make, it would have been 6-8ft and out of control on the open beach breaks, but the bathymetry at supers concentrates the swell into thickness instead of height. Similar to Chopes at 4ft vs 8ft at the outer reefs
Us boogers love it

Very similar to today here. Keito Matsuoka (2019 Wave of the Winter) was up here tube-pigging. One of those guys where sometimes you just get out and watch.

I was at nazare that day and it's amazing how the canyon there multiplies the swell. Biggest waves I have seen in almost 60 years of playing in it

Because in all honesty it's a fickle wave. Days like this are few each winter.

Supertubos is similar to D'bah, it looks better inside the wave than it looks from the beach!

Portugal has a handful of waves that would be much better suited for WSL armchair commentators, but they're a relatively young surfing nation and doing the best they can, speaking on which Sagria beer comes in glass for 2euro with excellent hospitality, compared to surfing in Norway!

Too funny.... I knew the 6-8' would create havoc!
It's simple really. That's 6-8 by the Sydney SN surf reports...
4-5 by the Victorian ones.... (now where's the winking emoji?)
