More perfect tens, more sharks as J'Bay reaches the pointy end

JEFFREYS BAY, South Africa (Wednesday, July 19, 2017) - The world's best surfers have been breaking performance barriers over the past several days with a flawless swell gracing South Africa's Jeffreys Bay for the Corona J-Bay Open, Stop No. 6 of 11 on the 2017 World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour. Competition ran through the remaining heats of Round 4 followed by Round 5 and the first two Quarterfinal heats in beautiful six-to-eight foot surf at Jeffreys Bay.

Following another morning of electrifying surfing from the world's best, this afternoon's competition was placed on hold when event organizers and safety teams began tracking a 3 metre Great White Shark swimming into the competition lineup during the Quarterfinal heat between Gabriel Medina (BRA) and Mick Fanning (AUS). Fanning, a 3X WSL Champion, famously encountered an aggressive Great White during the opening minutes of the 2015 Final at Jeffreys Bay, the dramatic live broadcast vision of the encounter quickly becoming the biggest story on the planet.

Response and Safety Teams placed the athletes onto boats and monitored the shark as it exited the lineup. After discussion with the Commissioner's Office and the athletes, competition resumed with Medina besting Fanning and advancing to the Semifinals.

“I’m really glad they got us out of the water but I felt really safe out there with the skis, the drones and the plane so it was an easy decision to paddle out,” said Fanning. “We had a slow start to the heat and I made a few mistakes but Gabe (Medina) is just surfing so well at the moment so it was a tough heat. It’s been such an incredible contest though. I think we’ve seen some of the best surfing to see how many 10-point rides have gone down. What else could happen here?”

Frederico Morais (PRT) upset the reigning WSL Champion John John Florence (HAW) again today in the Quarterfinals and eliminated him in equal 5th place. Florence put the pressure on early with two big nine-point rides. The rookie rose to the challenge and selected a beautiful wave to score 9.77 but Florence answered back and improved his situation with a 9.10. With three minutes on the clock and first priority, Morais let go of all the pressure, found a perfect looking set wave and was rewarded with a Perfect 10-point ride, his first on the CT and the eighth of the event, to send home the World Champion. Morais will advance on the Semifinals for the first time this season where he will face Medina.

“The waves are so much fun out there,” Morais said. “We had a little adventure out there with the shark at the beginning but everything was great and we’re safe and taken care of. Every time I surf against John (Florence) we have some really close heats and some really tough match-ups. He had me on the ropes until the last minute but I had priority and I used it well. I love a good challenge and this heat was a big, big challenge and I loved it and I’m into the Semis. Honestly I hate sharks, we don’t worry about that in Portugal so I’m not used to it, but we were safe so we surfed and it was fine. When you’re focused on the heat you forget all about that. It’s my first 10 point ride on the Championship Tour and on day like this and against John is emotional.”

Earlier in the day Fanning delivered a near-perfect 9.80 in Round 5 for a series of carves before he pulled into a wide open barrel on a beautiful set wave to end the run of 2017 WSL Rookie Joan Duru (FRA).

Florence previously dispatched current No. 3 on the Jeep Leaderboard Owen Wright (AUS), who was eliminated in 9th place, with another solid performance.

An in-form Jordy Smith (ZAF) opened the resurf of his Round 5 heat against Conner Coffin (USA) with an excellent 9.37 and quickly backed it up with his third Perfect 10 of the event. Two excellent scores from Coffin were not enough and his is eliminated in 9th place while the two-time event winner will advance on the Quarterfinals where he will face Toledo.

“I’m pretty stoked to get that one out the way,” said Smith. “Filipe (Toledo) surfed a great heat this morning and went absolutely mad. I tried my best but Filipe took to the air and did what he does best. You have to start fresh every day and it’s pumping out there so you just want to try and dominate.”

Jordy Smith

Round 4 saw a sensational aerial display from Filipe Toledo (BRA) who was rewarded with a Perfect 10 (his second of the event) and a win over Smith and Julian Wilson (AUS). Toledo advanced on to the Quarterfinals, skipping elimination Round 5.

“The wind is really good for airs right now,” Toledo said. “It’s really hard to surf when the wind is like this so I decided to go to the air and it worked really good. The waves are pumping today so it was really fun and I’m ready for the Quarterfinals.”

Filipe Toledo

World No. 1 Matt Wilkinson (AUS) also claimed his place in the Quarterfinals with two excellent scores, including a 9.43, to send Michel Bourez (PYF) and Coffin to Round 5 where they were both eliminated. Wilkinson will match-up against fellow Australian Wilson when competition resumes.

The contest was eventually called off after Quarterfinal 2 in declining surf and event organizers will reconvene tomorrow morning at 7:30 a.m. local time to assess conditions and make the next call.

Agree TB, been a spectacular contest all round.

Would have liked an interview with Jordy after the re-surf, I'm guessing he wasn't in the mood to talk though. Roles reversed he would have done the same in a minute so hope he realises that. Him and Felippe is going to be the heat to watch.

I could go on and on but the winner has to be the surf- how much mind surfing have we all done in the last few days. Beautiful stuff.

Go Wilko! (and Felippe)

2 heats cleared due to sharks, one with J dub and then with Mick , what r the chances!!!
Not sure I go for Connors resurf though, how much more would he have needed to get through, old heat scores were deleted, it was maybe a low 8 , would it really have made a difference?

This is great:+) this is more like being part of the Floyd Mayweather versus Conor McGregor beat up!
All we need is a fist fight and this sport tops it all! I mean we have death waves sharks and.......

Frederico Morais is now the deserving winner in my opinion!

A few things stand out. Not many of you's have ever surfed or seen very good waves have you. A wave that breaks like a freak bank at dribs, and zennie's foaming.

Then there's the even more obvious. You could hear that pointer laughing its fucking head off from here! Imagine it going back to its mates, laughing its fucking head off, and telling them, 'ya got come and look, now they've they painted themselves like fucking zebras, and they got these little bits of fucking wire hanging off their arses! Fucking hilarious, I swam where ever I fuckin' liked and they did fuck all!'

Then the finale. Kelly's bought surfing. Zenny and the little drivlin' double decker blowie will be first in line at the pool, after the WSL have banned the ocean, and will be the first to get their autographed copies of the 'Slats guide to weightlifting and back power (revised edition)'. And they will be first to buy the weather guides, telling them if they should wear their fannsy pastel T, or Parky hooded parka on the way down there.

I knew it would happen. Things are completely out of control over west too.

Interesting comments, Herc. You've been to Jeffreys I take it?

It does get better than this. That's a given. It's even been better in competition previously. With better approaches.

Anyway, frothers gotta froth.

Actually, how's the shark attitudes? Do I detect a change afoot? Less "kill 'em all, let God sort 'em out" to "meh, they just be chillin', no sweat"..."they're almost like dolphins with sharper teeth, chillax".

Will this pro attitude filter down to the cheap seats?

If I pulled up to what I consider good, and it needed a 200 knot cross shore to blow the 'swell' in, I'd say it was a surf, but wind fucked. If the 'big' sets were slopey, thin, wobbly fat handers, same. If I had to sit for ages to wait for a 'goody' same thing, fucked. Bunny hopping and even that fucking crouching, using your hands shit to pull you around the slop, that even JJF was reduced to... maybe that's your thing zennzless but... really? You've already booked ya tickets haven't ya.

If Herc reckons some of these waves (the not wind blown ones) are rubbish I am not sure what planet he is on. He is obviously nowhere near the standard of these fellas or he would be out there and frothing like they are. These are the best surfers in the world on great waves full stop. Never pleasing some people always a glass half empty miserable way to approach life.

Driving these class of boats is not as tricky as you think. But you may notice he nearly got a front edge in as he was coming down. He had control. There is a main rib thru the centre which prevents the buckle. It was cool but I'm not sure if WSL would be too happy. A smaller IRB (as what the lifeys use which a totally different story.
But that surf is as good as it gets given the timeframe we have had this swell - with more to come. And to think JJF was beaten just shows how these blokes are up ting the anti.

Looking back at the JJF - Frederico heat, I can't see Fredo winning it. Sure, Fredo made no errors but just look at JJfs laybacks, some green rooms. Hmmm just can't see it.

lolo's picture

lolo Thursday, 20 Jul 2017 at 2:36pm

I reckon they are screwing up big time by throwing all these 10s out there and the JJF - Morais finish was the perfect example. By giving Frederico a 10 they combo'd JJF which is stupid. When you're trading mid 9's and throw a 10 in there it fucks it.

What happens if he comes out and gets a wave like Toledo's. It's about a 14 or 15 up against most of those 10's. It should not have been impossible for JJF to win that heat with a couple of minutes to go.

Herc's picture

Herc Thursday, 20 Jul 2017 at 2:55pm

Membless, get a grip. Again, if the wind is howling 318 knot cross shore, and makes the 'swell' 'peak', it creates what is called fucking slop. And if that wind finally drops out, well, again, guess what the fucking slop hangs in for days. You might delight in surfing fucking slop, good for you. Also, if the sets all miss the reef, its slop, with thin fat handers. If you need to sit around for ages to finally find one worth riding, in the slop, its all yours. Never needed it. Some of us have standards.

Good call shats, the poor fucking boat crew was forced to ride the wave of the day (under direct command from upstairs), to create the 'excitement' of the day, because the 'champs' couldn't even figure out it was coming, or where it would break, and just got smashed by it.

Also, notice that the call, the cry, the blatant, cocky squwark from the booth, was that the boat was, quote, 'a twinnie'. The only craft that could get near the thing. And yes, the sceptics among us will note that it was made pretty clear that that comment was directly aimed at, yes, our own champeen twinnie drubber, stuwed.

Finally membles, trust me, the cheeks and clackers will already be quivering. By the time the girls running the show finish with their performing clowns (for a start, they are twice their size), those champeen clowns will say what they are told, when they are told, why they are told and how they are told, on demand. They will stand on the edge of the pool screeching, foaming, spraying and squwarking about the greatest waves, the most magnificent spectacle ever seen, as if their dear lives depended on it. And you fucking skittles will all line up nicely.
