Feels good after it, like your bodies charged up and full of energy.
Been doing a few long trail runs lately and it feels good for the muscle soreness after them.
Sounds good. Have been thinking of getting one as a few people I know swear by them. Most people seem positive and get benefits from it.

About the cheapest ice I can find is 3 bags for 10 bucks at Woolly's GF. That's quite an investment over the long term (unless you're making your own ice).
I used my own pool last year when things cooled down (lucky to have one), but I'm looking for a solution year round. I'm into it - definitely helped with recovery and mood. Cold showers don't quite give you the same buzz as fully immersing in cold water.
Ahhhhhh, Ice baths. Putting your body into a state of shock/death for 5 minutes everyday isnt going to help you in the long run.
You get an intitial buzz sure, feel great for a few hours sure, but the long term affects are not what you think.
Putting your body into a state of shock everyday aint what your body is designed for. Fight or flight isn't good long term and will age you quickly.
Do them 3 times per week MAX and no longer than 5 minutes, anything beyond that is completely unnecessary.
^^^ Yep.
(More appropriate if you are doing daily rigorous full contact / heavy intensity training)
Enjoy the fad tho, it's z modern saunagus therapy ;)
Old school Russians and Scandinavians been doing it for centuries.
@goofyfoot , those photos are right next to that little beach overlooking playgrounds , not far from where you’re staying . I was pretty sore in my right arm and shoulder yesterday and didn’t surf . After this mornings sauna /ice bath I felt pretty good and no longer sore in right arm . Got back and shippies was starting to pulse at a consistent 4ft , very surprising swell out of nowhere. Had a really fun 2 hour surf before wind got into it . Sitting here now pain free so I think the sauna/ice bath has done something. I don’t know much about the science behind it , just heard it’s good for circulation.
It's very helpful with recovery.
I'd probly be in it twice a day with that view to remedy specific aches and pains - its not essential healing stuff, great for helping change states tho and assisting with treatment for a soft tissue issue ;)
Supa, think about the affects to your body almost getting hit by a car every single day. The adrenaline spike, and fight or flight feeling you get. The stress you put your body through in ice baths isnt a good thing long term. Short term, great.
Look at Whimhoff, he looks 110 years old. haha
Scandinavian countries, Russia, Ukraine and a heap of other countries have been using sauna and ice baths for centuries.
I guess they didn’t get the SN experts memo.

You go girl. keep aging that body unnecessary because you saw it on instagram. go The Dill.
At the risk of getting into another disagreement about science, I'll hang my hook on Hubermann and Soderberg. Sorry Burls, your anecdotal advice just doesn't cut it. I've also read Wimm's book ( a bit of a crack pot, but he has done some amazing things with his body which he attributes both to cold exposure and breathwork). I've been hit by a car 3 times on my bike (none my fault) - apples and oranges - I'll take ice baths anytime. I got into them as a pre-diabetic and did my own research. (So I guess I had an existing bias but it feels good and I actually look forward to it). Also on a 16/8 fast most days. Dropped 8kgs and kept it off for over 18 months.

i would say the fasting along with healthy eating is the reason you dropped the weight. Not the ice baths.
It's a fad, not a bad short term fad, but longterm, putting your body through that for 30 minutes of heightened life isn't worth it.
Your body doesn't know you're just having an ice bath, it thinks you're dying, doing this everyday won't help you.
I'm all for breathwork and limited exposure to ice baths. just not everyday
Yeah - not in the ice baths for weight loss - and I agree with not icing everyday. 11 mins total per week is enough.

Not having a dig burls but is this just your opinion?
Nearly everything I’ve read/listened to about them is overwhelmingly positive.
A guy called Paul Taylor( the Paul Taylor podcast) has a big range of doctors, scientists, coaches, athletes, as well as being a very knowledgeable guy himself all say good things about them.
The Andrew Huberman podcast also interviews scientists, docs etc etc that rave about ice baths. I could go on but that’s just a couple.
Keen to hear where you got your opinion from.

Bugger, I should have just copied and pasted your post ha ha.
Yeah Woolies probably cheapest. My ice bath only cost about $150 to buy so if I’m spending $30 odd bucks a week (much less in winter in Vic I’m assuming) I’m ok with that outlay.

The problem with them is not that they are bad, but that their importance is overhyped. Or, at least, people see fit people using them on socials and overhype them in their own mind.
Getting a good balance of diet, exercise, rest, stress management organised is the most important and then you can add the ice baths.
And yeh, wouldn’t do it every day but 1-3x a week I wouldn’t have a problem with. Your body doesn’t think it’s dying lol

Quick, let’s post about intermittent fasting…
It’s been going on for centuries also. It was just called by a different name. Hunger and famine and the crops didn’t come in on time.
Those subsistence farmers really were a healthy bunch.

Maybe temporarily. But then you hit 30 lol

Fark off toady
- geez you think u know a lotta shit when u don't.
Ice baths are aligned with sports science - they are not sport science itself but a small aspect of it
- modern sports people don't have all the better faster skills and recovery due solely to ice bathing farkn 'ell ;)
All u do here is conflate nothingness into pathetic pretentious non facts.
Part of the lure of an extended ice bath routine is the prospect of good sleep as another byproduct - one of the greatest healers of all
Ice baths are great.
The modern stuff is mostly a fad.
Doesn't mean it's bad or wrong ;)
- what supa is doing is great, and go it if he's getting results.
And goofy, I was referring more to the insta image hype train bs.
I'm more than aware of the decades old professional sport and sports science driven catalysts
- it's also been in the fight game for a long time.
In regard to the old school practices including back to viking days etc, the ice bathing / sauna 'saunagus' rituals and cultural rituals etc - they were similar in the sense of the therapeutic benefits, but the whole new age ice bath ' movement ' is an offshoot of alternate methods to keep things like the black dog at bay.
And if that is what ppl wanna do and it works then good on em ;)
- our versions tho are populist westernised fad versions. $ .
@goofyfoot , I don’t cook but have access to a good kitchen if I get the urge . I eat at warungs and restaurants, warung costs about $3-$5 depending on how much of a pig I wanna be , a nice Japanese restaurant has awesome menu and costs about $10-$20 again depending on how big a pig I wanna be . There’s 3 new French bakeries on the island that I try to avoid but every now and then I succumb to their blueberry cream tarts , fucking expensive though, western prices . I eat for free where I stay but get bored with menu . I eat fish regularly which is fairly cheap compared to Australia . There’s lots of restaurants here with good food but western prices .
Jelly I agree with a lot of what you say in your last post.
Especially this bit “ And if that is what ppl wanna do and it works then good on em ;)”
Because in the end that’s all that really matters isn’t it?
Also that Viking stuff sounds interesting I’m going to read up on it. Fuck they were wild

Beautiful place and people. I visited around 2014. If you get a chance visit Skagen where the North and Baltic seas meet. It was probably where I had my first ever cold dip. A unique experience. We stayed with friends at Kandestedern in houses nestled in dunes and turf grown on the roof. (Not sure why, maybe for insulation). Unforgettable place. Loved it.
