This is not the article I was after but has similar theme. Tried to find source but those people who never drink statistically die younger than moderate drinkers. Heavy drinking is bad no arguments. Researchers from memory could not determine why, but main theory was that socialising that can be associated with drinking being the major factor. Also moderate drinking can help reduce stress. Lots of conflicting evidence as some point out that any alcohol consumption can have negative health outcomes. Dunno???
Guess at end of day your genes will have final say.

One place i rented in Newtown i was growing dope, a pretty big setup and had a 30cm wide bed and just long enough for my body. The rest of the room were home made clone setups, veg rooms and 2 metre by 1 metre by 2 metre high flowering setup. My powerful extractor fan made the room extremely humid with out a hole in the ceiling, so i pulled down the light and cut a hole big enough for the 150mm ducting..Im pretty sure it was espestos ceiling too and i didnt use a mask.
It worked though and before i did that i was getting huge balls of ear wax in my ears every day and have had itchy ears ever since.

Not that I'm a pisshead (I usually fall asleep after a few beers) but I have personally found it easier to abstain from alcohol than moderate consumption. Made a snap decision a few years back (the afternoon of New Years Eve, no less!) to stop drinking and managed to last nine months.

Been considering another dry spell for a while now, but I've come across a couple of awfully nice dark ales that require some attention. So, I may be a while.

As Zen said, it’s pretty hard to beat a good feed with good crew and a few drinks to wash it all down.

Working week midday pub feed with pre and post beers whilst everyone else is grafting is one of my all time favourite activities. Got some friends coming to visit next week so there’s the ( unnecessary) excuse to green light a hearty session.

I also don’t mind a good beer buzz early in the morning….just like Sheryl. If I do feel like a beer there is no rules.

Noticed one of my favorite surfers has a new board model by JS. Mikey Wright Schooner model handles 8-10 foot pipe etc and classic ad for it had me laughing..But i hope he doesn't go overboard with the piss like many other pros did.Awesome surfer, under rated and tour material i just dont think the tour has waves critical or heavy enough for him.

Never been a big drinker nor are my kids. Although my dad loved a beer he always drunk at home and I never ever saw him pissed. Mates were big drinkers as were their parents and kids. Not always the case I guess but maybe something it that for you young parents.

On the topic of health and fitness, I recently watched an interview with David Sinclair who was explaining epigenetic and biological age.

There is a simple exercise you can preform in which will provide a frame work of where you are with your overall fitness.

Basically you lie on you back and then you must get to your feet without using your hands.

Most 20 year olds can do this with ease. In your thirties you generally need to use one knee and in your forties an elbow and one knee etc etc - there are ways to score how you perform the test.

You can google "sitting rising" test. There are papers written in regards to using this exercise to predict your mortality, which are actually quite interesting.

I grew up in an Air Force family. Liked where I lived. Melbourne, Penang, Ipswich. Sale. Melbourne.. Darwin. Townsville. Realised later in life that it created many problems that continue today.

I used to love Coopers Pale Ale Until I discovered I was a Coeliac at 45yrs age.
I had a lot of health problems before that.
I recommend getting checked if you feel shit after drinking non GF beer or eating lots of bread or pasta.
I reckon there is lots of undiagnosed coeliacs out there.

See if you can track down a Scream & Stout (by Shambles x Pink Boots). Limited run, may be sold out now. Not technically a dark ale, but a "very drinkable chocolate stout. Oats were added for a nice body and a decent amount of lactose for a creamy finish. While fermenting, we’ve added 10kg each of Cocoa Nibs and Raspberries making this beer drink like a bar of dark chocolate & raspberry."

I'm from a military family too Seeds. Three different primary schools and three different high schools. Kinda sucked. On the same token though I was lucky enough to be quite smart and good at sport so didn't take long for me to fit in. Being really handsome kinda worked against me though. I feel for my bros though who were less outgoing and humble than me.

Must be tough on kids in retrospect, not to mention the wives too. And, as you would know, alcohol is in never short supply in the services.

Yes paddling number 1, however a heavy 15m battle rope and simulating paddling (best you can) for 15 - 20 minutes every second day builds crazy strength through your shoulders and back.

Along with dropping the excess body fat will have you paddling harder and faster than most.

Good topic with some great insights. Through the lockdowns of 2020 I started skating again as a substitute and Christmas Eve 2020 fell hard and tore my rotator cuff. I couldn’t lift my left arm above shoulder height and was devastated as surfing was off the cards.
A year passed and Xmas 21 had resigned myself to the possibility of never surfing again.
I’d seen doctors, surgeon (who said tear was small and didn’t recommend surgery) and been pretty disciplined at home rehab/physical therapy. I also bought a road bike and started cycling as an outlet which really helped my mental well-being and kept me really fit. Come February this year I eventually began to feel improvement in my shoulder and felt I had the range of motion required for paddling. So I paddled out on a smallish day and got through a quick session with minimal discomfort, I couldn’t believe I was back out there, was such a good feeling.
I’ve continued on and felt stronger and shoulder has felt better and better each session. I’ve continued my rehab exercises (resistance band and dumbbell work) I also started hanging from bar and have kept up the cycling which I find really compliments fitness requirements for surfing.
For paddling fitness I’ve always found swimming laps to be great.
I’m in my early forties and regarding alcohol have cut back recently and feel much better for it, sleep so much better without any alcohol in me.
I sympathise with N Bone re social anxiety and drinking to combat it.
I definitely see myself going down the path of full sobriety in the near future. Although I do believe everything in moderation to be a pretty good way to go, it’s just I think when it comes to alcohol can be hard to define. Personally I’d prefer nothing over just one beer or wine and when you start having multiple drinks possibly every day it can soon become too much.

I prob didn’t explain it very well reading back what I wrote.

You can’t match paddling standing upright with a battle rope, I stand with legs shoulder width apart, knees slightly bent and lift one end of the rope in each hand.

Bring the rope as high as you can then bring down with force, so it’s more this motion and similar to your hand hitting the water and pulling through the water.

You can find a nice rhythm while keeping your body as stable as possible as you want your back and shoulders to take the majority of the work.

I vary this routine with 15 mins none stop to 1 minute on at 90% then 1 minute rest intervals for 20 minutes.

That prob doesn’t make sense either. Haha
