Australia - you're standing in it
seeds:
"Our pies are hard?"
...well 'ard ;)
- maybe just different structure or thinner pastry on ours
One thing the kiwis do good are mince/steak and cheese pies.
well ‘ard! Haha funny stuff.
Don’t think I had a pie when I was in NZ.
I don't want to go too far off-topic, but we just had my favourite pizza from our local as a treat for the grom who is going to be on liquids for the next little bit following some surgery. They don't go OTT with the cheese, just quality ingredients and flavour. Hmmm, pizza pie ! (back on topic again).
I just had the best chicken party ever at Jamie Oliver's Kitchen in Kuta, nearly as good as a pasty.
l meant to say chicken parmy.
Chicken party works. Wish I got an invite.
Heading back today- had a few pies since I've been here. Local Vietnamese bakery does killer steak and mushroom. Might have to smash one more before I say sayonara to Oz.
Roady mentioned onigiri might be the J equivalent to a pie but I reckon moreso nikuman (steamed pork bun) in different guises- cheap, hot and fills a hole.
Btw- how fucking good is Oz! Apart from being bent over everytime I opened my wallet, everything is so beautiful and looked after, not much litter, people are so cool. Multiculturalalism seems to be working, everyone just getting on. Loved it.
Took my wife for a walk in the bush near mums home looking for koalas on sunset. Saw one and got pics. One of the highlights of her trip.
Don't worry, Australia is still the lucky country.
Catch you when we get back.
Sausage roll stuffed into fresh bread roll with dead horse fresh from bakery...
Use to be my go to, easier to eat driving than a pie...
Now only clean living haha

You must have travelled with me in the past Zen! :)
Hey Zen what did your better half think of Aus ?
and did you get a surf in ?
Loved it. Bit scared of the people though but that's her, she's pretty shy. Loved the nature and how family all comes together. Think she's stinging for some soba though.
Scored some nice waves with my bro on the Monday at Wurtulla- basically where it all started for me 40 odd years ago.
The walk into the beach through the Casurinas and the showers, little park for the kids, clean and well looked after dunny, little picture boards educating people on the coastal flora and fauna. Cold sand, warm water, good vibe in the water.
Fuck Oz does beaches.
Cheers guys.

Classic Zen, you were in my present stomping ground. Lucked out Monday ey.
I was at Firetail....

what did you pay for a chicken parm at Oliver's in Kuta?

@ Roadkill, it was one of the dearest dishes, 169k, the deserts were to die for and being happy hour got 2 cocktails for 1. Had the pizzas the other night, 109k fucken unreal.
@old-dog , will you still be in Bali for the coming swell ? Hope your wife’s mozzie free , my daughter got dengue last week, she’s recovered quickly, had 1 night in hospital as a precaution, she only had mild dengue, temperature, sore stomach, red spots on hand . The hospital had a lot of cases .
@ Superfreak, sadly going home tomorrow. Went out to Ulus a few days, plenty big enough for this old bastard, took 2 hours to get back one day, full gridlock when the school term ended. Had a couple of O.K. Sessions at middles and Kuta Reef, not too busy in the arvo but a bit windy. Went against all my principles and hired a log and had some fun at Legian too. Haven't even seen a mozzie all trip. Cheers.

Does it what.
Ms IB and I had a morning swim at a Ballina beach ages ago. Small waves, crystal clear, warm. Nobody else around.
Air dried on the beach afterwards, then walked to the local cafe for coffee and breakfast. Perfect morning, and she still talks about it.
Australia is wonderful.

Not sure if it applies to pasties.
Love it. Missed the pie thread so far. Didn't Dad love the Tassie scollop pies when he came down to visit us while we were working there - height of civilisation he reckoned. They are king of all Oz pies.
The surveyors staple was the pie and iced coffee, by traveling widely one could gauge inflation, and quality of produce in many parts of Oz. Noticed east coast dairy had more creamy iced coffees, but as WA crew cannot ever say anything bad about Brownes. The numbing shock of morning tea breaching $12.50 in Karratha in 2006 has probably been overtaken by today's prices. Shoutout to the old Dunsborough bakery, and the more recent Miami bakery in MH, if they are still on top of their game.
Funniest exchange of of food pics was when in UK in 2013 with huge plate of salad dinner for 3.50 pounds, bro is on plane up to NW mines and has the saddest takeaway salad in plastic rectangular container for AU$17.50 at airport. Ripped.
The Ms is a country girl so quality pies are a matter of pride. "How did you remain so thin?" my brother in law asked me. The apex of all recipes is her mum's carrot cake recipe, you could feed a family off the thing with nutrition taken care of.
"autodidact" had to look that up.

" The surveyors staple"
Whilst developing the nation, one can partake in a wonderful hobby of sampling Manny fine pastries .
Also guaging the barometer of the economy

The other fun bit was every time going through a wine region, I asked the locals what they thought was the best drop and sent a bottle back to Dad in one of those Australia post red plastic wine freight containers!
As long as everyone is clear on how to say pasty. Its parstee, as on the clip from jelly, only poms say passtee. I am going to buy 2 for lunch.
The bakery at Crescent Head makes a good pastie (Parstee), only thing I don't like is they put corn in them
Btw here in S.A. the undisputed birthplace its spelled pasty (singular) and pasties (plural).
Parstee and Paystee is like the old Masters Cows ad where the boys have a word with Tania
Tarnya/Tan-ya
Cannot find this gem of advertising on youtube, anyone who missed these legends, here's a link to the 2015 reboot:

Great bakery. They make pumpkin bread which is just devine lightly toasted with butter lashings. My local bakery does it but only on Saturdays.
wot's a pasty? is it like a pie?
beyond the tunes thread @blackers. Aussie as... venues and public meeting places for misfits, the confused, and those that know what's what. Proper punk. I knew it as the public bar, and we all played gigs there, they let anything in. today it is more 90s punk that anything on brunswick st ever was.. absolutely love it, thank you. can't believe it exists and the owners did that tote fundraiser thing!

Haha Thanks Blackers yeah I used to until my kids went to Uni then well and truly put me in my place,
Wots a pasty? The pasty (rhymes with nasty) was introduced to SA by the Cornish migrants who used to eat them while working the mines. Beef steak or mince, diced potato, turnip, and perhaps onion and a few peas, seasoned with salt and pepper wrapped in a D shaped case of short flakey pastry crimped on one side. These days there are countless variations like spinach and cheese, chicken and mushroom or pumpkin and ricotta etc. In SA they outsell pies 4 to 1.
A pie is a mystery bag of minced left-over animal parts, offal, gristle and gelatine encased in a round pastry case that falls apart when bitten into. Cheers.
I feel better after eating a nice Parrrrsty , than after eating a nice Pie .
I feel better eating a Pie .
Just saying .
I might feel even better eating a nice pie , after a nice pastie , nearly .
A pie @ the Footy is tradition .
Stuff that Sticks to Ribs !

It's a great place indeed, a thing of naive beauty and a collective memory of what things have been and can be. Glad you enjoyed it. It was the setting for this vid.
Btw best stop teasing on the pasty front, it clearly confuses.
This one for dinner tonight, excellent.
Didn’t buy from there about $6 locally.

Seeds. Hi and thanks for posting this. I’m following this shit situation closely.
Simply don’t buy the salmon from these greedy Brazilian environmental morons.
Weak as piss state and federal governance.
So much for Tassie’s clean green push of tourist marketing, before you know it we will be following the Kiwis with their 100%PURE slogan which is blatantly just utter bullshit, NZ environment is an incredibly polluted one and especially from all of the timber preservative chemicals used in that type of industry.
And before anyone shouts me down, take the time to look into the NZ problem, because I tell you, we’re running a very close 2nd. Makes me sick.
Environment 1st, jobs 2nd, no life on a fucked up planet. AW
Edit, my brother on King Island says they are constantly battling these salmon cartels as they push to install that horrendous process onto the pristine northern beaches of known acclaim.
Its a pity it taste so good.
indo-dreaming wrote:Its a pity it taste so good.
Indo. Hi.
Totally agree. But this is what’s going on.
These fish are being fed pellets that they eat voraciously whilst swimming with thousands of others in their own faecal matter, that’s then deoxygenating the water column and adding to that local skate’s existence.
In addition, feed pellets are dyed all different colours so the fishing cartel can discern who belongs to what.
And people want to eat that!!!
I once had a client in Hawthorn in Melbourne, he was a fucking jerk and was a school fish doctor, basically a trouble shooter for these big cartels, his smart wife left him in the end.
He was rarely home because of the diseases that use to trouble these monocultures in these pen/ponds. He earnt a fortune and was basically on speed dial when ever something went majorly wrong , which was very often.
This practice is no good for people, bony fish and cartilaginous fish (skates, sharks). Fuck them off I say. AW
Pete Evans did a series on ABC TV years ago on sustainability in the fishing industry, pretty rooted overseas with high and low standards here. Most sustainable fish we can all eat are sardines it turns out
Not just salmon from Macquarie Harbour but also trout. I believe, in a unique situation they have there, in the pens are trout in the upper levels in a layer of freshwater and salmon lower in a saline level of the water column.
Love to eat both but don’t anymore.
Such a beautiful place to visit.

We are so good at destroying our remaining relatively pristine locales.
