Shark Attack at Fishery Bay, South Oz

Just got word that a young surfer's had his leg bitten off in a shark attack at Right Point, Fishery Bay (near Port Lincoln) this morning. Media reports are now filtering in that the fella is on his way to Port Lincoln Hospital.

This is the the same bay (although the opposite side) from where Jake Heron was attacked at Left Point in 2005.

Just chatted to a mate in Lincoln, who spoke with someone who witnessed it - apparently he saw the bloke's board cruising outside the lineup on its own. Took a while to register that the shark had bitten off the guy's leg, which was still attached to the legrope (and subsequently the surfboard) - so the shark was dragging the board around! There were 12-15 guys in the lineup at the time too (on days like today, Right Point is the only wave that's surfable). He got attacked right near the suck rock too, i.e. not very far offshore.

Shit that's awful. Poor bastard. Best wishes to the bloke and his family, for whatever that's worth at a time like that.

Apparently the surfboard with legrope and leg was retrieved . That might prove the shark wasnt hungry , maybe just one of the many pointers that have been trained by the shark cage dive tours nearby . Trained to associate humans with biting

Some reports of witness saying the shark was potentially 6m.
A 6m GWS would take much more than a leg if it was in feed mode.
Don't want to make any light of the situation though, best wishes to the poor young fellow and fingers crossed for him and his recovery.

All the best to the young fella. Hope he pulls through ok.

And to the SA surfers down there, take care.

Yeah a 6 metre long GWS dragging a board around is a bit like a jaws movie

that's a helluva guts effort for the people who managed to get this bloke to shore alive. He would've bled out in minutes with a leg missing.
Best wishes to him and his family and the people who rescued him.

Hows the coverup attempts by obviously pro shark tour reports . Originally this story for the first day or so , all news reports say chris was 350 metres from shore surfing . But a report obviously with a different agenda reports chris was a few metres from shore . Ie surfing a point break & being attacked just near the rocks . Ie take off spot . Media = fish bites surfer ! Bullshit

It shits me to think that these shark tour companies probably know that they are potentially creating a monster with associating humans and food but what the heck theres money to be made ,fuk everyone else.Rodney Fox a shark attack victim himself started this originally and you would think he would have gone 1+1 =2 and been totally against it,love to know his thoughts on this these days .Ban it!

thermalben Wednesday, 29 Apr 2015 at 6:42am

I remember seeing the 350m reference and thought perhaps they were stating its distance relative to the beach (in actual, Right Point is 600m from the beach!).

Dunno if it's a 'coverup' though... I really can't see how anybody could spin their agenda into something like this.

I mean, as MDM mentioned in the third post, Channel 9 reported the attack happening from a different beach (Sleaford Bay). So as is common with breaking news events, the actual facts are sometimes rough approximations in the rush to publish.

Ben i googled all the news for more than 48 hrs after the attack . If i could link them to here i would . Well we all know about the changing of the word shark attack to shark bites dont we ? That ones about a few years old . Rod fox used his misfortune to his advantage by working with sharks

P.s. Even the report that said sleaford still said fisheries beach . Mdm was mistaken there . I read everything googleable & they all said fisheries & had accurate sounding reports .

It did say Sleaford when it was first published - looks like they've gone back and amended it.

No worries Caml...

How do you think it's going to affect the region? I mean it's such a good spot in winter. Few weeks out of the water then back into it like Cactus and Elliston in 2001?

Wonder if any of the local boys are gonna take up shark fishing temporarily....

So i read that its seal pup season for the next 2 months . Bring the pointers in for meals . Even with all the exposure s.a. Is getting it can be countersacted in a moment with a shark attack . Instead of being last out alone i went in with the last lads recent days surfing . It doesnt matter how long you stay outta the water after an attack ! Jaws will be waiting ! & chris .hope your feeling better .poor guy.

A good friend of mine was there and witnessed the whole thing, hes still very shaken up by it, he said the guy was only a few meters from the rocks in no more than 2 meters of water and in a group, he heard loud splashing and turned around to see the blokes board tomb-stoning then the board started being dragged off, he was watching from the car park and was the one who retrieved the guys surfboard which by then had drifted over to the left point, upon retrieving the board he found the leg still attached to the leash.

Gotta say it and im totally anti cage diving but that video was such a beat up,lets stir up a couple whites stick two dudes in a bath tub and get the shots, dont know whos more stupid cage operators or these idiots.Anyway you can see what happens when the whites get frustrated and angry and not sure if that was a six meter white looked more like 4 meters to me imo.

Hi Udo love the way its been dramatized into its gotta be massive to have eaten a 10ft white But who said it ate the whole shark?Theres no evidence only the washed up shark tag with the temperature change recorded on it but whatever ate the tag didnt necessarily eat the whole shark, maybe one big bite where the tag was would be enough.Anyway as seen recently at the Neptune islands orcas love attacking and eating parts of whites and a sperm whale has massive teeth and probably wouldnt say no to a bit of white pointer plus the many sharks that grow bigger than 10ft as in tigers and other whites.I have seen the boat attack thing before and its impressive if its the one im thinking of a few months ago, bigger shark than the nz one ......makes you wonder how big did they grow too before white men came along?

"Great White Sharks are widely, but not evenly, distributed in Australian waters. Areas where observations are more frequent include waters in and around some Fur Seal and Sea Lion colonies such as the Neptune Islands (South Australia); areas of the Great Australian Bight as well as the Recherche Archipelago and the islands off the lower west coast of Western Australia (Environment Australia 2002g; Malcolm et al. 2001). Juveniles appear to aggregate seasonally in certain key areas including the 90 Mile Beach area of eastern Victoria and the coastal region between Newcastle and Forster in NSW (Bruce & Bradford 2008). Other areas, such as the Portland region of western Victoria and the coast off the Goolwa region of South Australia, are also reportedly visited by juvenile Great White Sharks."

Well, I'm sure they visit many other spots down south other than Goolwa.

True that Ben, makes sense.
Sometimes there is no rhyme or reason, at a local level.
Secluded beach in WA, busy SA reef, river mouth in Nth NSW, Sydney Harbour, so varied in conditions.
In my opinion, there is a more fundamental change taking place regarding the food chain, therefore it works its way up the chain to the alpha predators. We cannot rape the ocean, so relentlessly and expect nothing to change. I don't mean taking too many sardines directly means more shark attacks, just that there is a relationship with the whole chain of events, across many species. Eventually we must expect to pay the ferryman our dues, through poorer quality food, lack of availability or other.
My two cents.....

nochaser's picture
nochaser's picture
nochaser Tuesday, 5 May 2015 at 12:59pm

Agree with the food chain DALTZ, fish farms more harm than good purse seine bait fish to feed the farm stocks and remove a integral part of the food chain creating imbalances.
"Due to the closure of the Eden cannery and decisions to ease commercial netting in the 1990s, the stocks have recovered. Commercial catch rates are again at historically high levels, although stocks appear to be relatively healthy." (Monthly Fishing Mag.) Most of the salmon ended up as cat food.
The Salmon due to overfishing were unknown to go past Sydney now since recovered fish stocks they migrate well into QLD water and it's old whitey's staple.
