I heart WOTD
Monster
WOTD is on a serious roll lately- cracker after cracker
Is Tim B shooting on film or is that a trick of the eye?
No film from Tim. It's actually a still from his RED. I assume the colour is more washed out than usual due to the sun being overhead.
Would be such a gorgeous shot if it wasn’t for the Jetski
wow, wow, wow, if this doesn't make you want to go for a surf- what will- shift keys not working again- insert question mark.
Very nice. Saturday was pumping east of Melbourne.
You....
(hang on, this will make it to the front page of the site!)
Thanks VJ...
Close up:
Looks idyllic, but really would have been pretty average, the left is fat piece of shit, the right can get good in the right conditions but only holds head high at the biggest, even then it needs the exact right conditions.
First time i surfed it me and two other guys were staying at nearby village and decided one arvo when the wind was no good at other waves to go for a walk, found this little pass but it looked pretty shitty, but thought what the hell we will go back get our boards and give it a go anyway.
So we did, surfed the right, was pretty shitty at first but could see potential, then as things often do things changed with every set, it cleaned up and then turned to glass the tide hit a perfect stage, and it started doing this nice little hollow wedge on the right one running off through a nice little inside section, not that big but still a lot of fun, only problem was it was also getting dark, but it was too fun to not keep surfing, so by the time we paddled in it was dark and we ended up having to find our way back to the village along a tiny jungle track getting bitten my mozzys, i dont think twice about malaria now, but was much more of a worry then.
BTW. Some graves of German missionaries (yeah not Dutch) near there too, must be a lot of stories from those missionaries that have gone untold..
Have surfed :-)
Im not saying this is 100% correct this is strictly my opinion only.
But to me it seems like the risk isn't what it once was, when you talk to locals they often laugh and say no malaria here and think all bule are just paranoid.
I think just education and distribution of mosquito nets etc has just helped reduce risk.
Just googled the topic and found this http://www.apmen.org/blog/11/indonesia-halfway-to-malaria-elimination/
Which seems to give some credibility to my view, personally id be more concerned about dengue fever these days as can be anywhere even in Bali and Jakarta and other built up areas.
Fully concur with Indo, I'm more concerned about dengue fever these days, can be anywhere in Bali, Jakarta, KL, Singapore etc
Yeah the cases of dengue are up too, if you look at yearly graphs over the last decade it's on the increase while malaria is on the decrease.
This article was written before the end of January but even then 100 people in Indonesia had died from dengue fever in less than 1 month while deaths from Malaria is Indonesia are generally less than 50 people in a whole year.
https://www.thejakartapost.com/news/2019/01/27/dengue-kills-more-than-10...
Although only about 50 people die of malaria every year cases are still quite high though about 1.5 million, so still a real threat https://www.statista.com/statistics/705127/number-of-malaria-cases-in-in...
(to be honest i had no idea it was that high)
Not sure the yearly rate for dengue fever, but read Jan this year was about 15,000 cases in Indo.
It's more about where you are though, for example dengue is a real risk anywhere in Indo but more so in built up areas like Java, Jakarta and Bali.
The risk of Malaria is now pretty low in may places in Indo, but still very high in areas like Sumba and Papua
This is the best risk map of seen of Indonesia for malaria quite detailed https://www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk/destinations/asia-east/indonesia/indones...
MP getting a run!
Don’t see many water shots from that stretch. Nice pic.
Don’t see many water shots from that stretch. Nice pic.
To complement the WOTD :o
And note that one of the first people to comment on that post, and heap praise, is perhaps the greatest power surfer of all time: TVC.
Blew me away too. Last few years there's been talk of 'Conner Coffin's new turn' and Slater's rarely seen carving 3-0, but I've never seen anyone do that turn.
Holy smokes that’s fucked
The force on his fins doing that nonsense must be incredible

JJF goes fishing.
Todays photo almost looks like a Dave Sparkes painting!
Nicely cropped. Bit of a hidey-hole wave that one. Methinks.
the boys on big boards!
Nice pic. Must be from last year?
Yep.
Thanks. Andy's pic from that spot shot from land that you had as a WOTD last year was sublime.
Gary particularly likes how today's photo is cropped so you can't even see the Jetskis helping da boyz do step-offs and get ferried up the point against the sweep.
I guess that's why it's a dreaming, Gary - the jetskis are things of myth & legend
If that's Winki today then it must be picking up a lot more swell than the rest of the coast :)
How good does the arc of spray look. Accidentally captured magic.
Great pic super fun rippable wave on its day, sadly don't see it like that with no one out very much anymore, but surfed it plenty of times with just a friend or two or even alone in days gone by.
First time i surfed it was pre resorts, rocked up in my local friends tiny local style little boat, couldn't anchor it, so waited between sets to fang through a little key hole just on the back of the right of the third wave out where a little village is hidden behind the palms, didn't know where to surf at first but quickly worked out where the wave was.
My first water shot WOTD! Stoked :p
How long did you last before you chucked the camera and got one yourself?
Stunning shot.
So the current was strong and I swam against it for 1.5hrs before I got what I wanted, then went in and grabbed my board and paddled out. Sitting there everything started cramping and I had to go back in aghhh. Made up for it in the arvo and the next morning! Same just a foot smaller.
Meterologist and TV celebrity, saver of dolphins, mountain explorer and geology teacher, and waterman surf photographer - is there nothing Craig cannot do?!
Well done mate, great shot! :)
Ha, thanks VJ, all for the love of it :)
Yep great shot Craig. Lookout Leroy Bellet!
another goodie in the "bloody hell" category
agree GS - how good is that?
Today's is class. Can't get enough of underwater photography.
The wave of the day does it for me big time. Nice work Steen Barnes , Shaun Anderson and Swellnet.
In one photo you've encompassed everything nice about surfing. If I was a wanker I'd say that it was perfect except for the fact he is in a wetsuit. Which it is , it's perfect .....except for the fact he's in a wetsuit.
