Might as well put this up in the politics subforum, to spare the front page. It's 18 months away or so, but here we go.

This is how Dutton wins:

Last time I checked, Lithium batteries in Australia were being recycled at 10% and overseas 5%….thats a lot of waste.
Lead acid batteries are being recycled at 95% so perhaps even though less efficient, we should go back to the old school backup systems which also use less other critical minerals.
Lead acid battery banks can be put together easily and cheaply and if not over discharged ( no more than 25% at a time) can last up to 10 years.
I’m going lead acid on my home and treating it really like a big mobile home with solar and mains charging. I don’t see the point in over priced over taxpayer subsidised lithium systems from China that can catch fire and be hard to recycle.
Most people could run an solar charged auxiliary power system through their house off common mobile home type inverters using a different coloured cable to the house cabling….free power.
We did it years ago in our little off grid surf shacks with the cars battery so I can’t see why upscaling is an issue…
For a few years in the early days I’d pull up at my shack and connect jumper leads from the car to my house cable and enjoy 12v lighting 12v TV and a thumping alpine car stereo mounted in a box in the lounge area…
So if you try you can have free power ….where there’s a will there’s a way.

You make some good points.

Lithium batteries make sense in many circumstance's like EV's but yeah for household system's the advantage's aren't as big, it not like you need that fast charge, or limited so much in weight and even size of batteries, acid batteries still do need more maintenance though and less efficient. (but assuming if cheaper)

Battery's overall though are pretty shitty things, expensive and limited life.

BTW. i think you can get proper acid batteries for solar set ups, when i lived at Fraser island most houses had solar with batteries and a generator.

If they can drastically reduce the price tag then this would be awesome , particularly for the trucking industry that Australia relies heavily upon . https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20240130-wireless-charging-the-roads-...

Optimist. Hi mate.
Glad to hear you’ve had and got PV and battery systems .
I’ve a mix of Lithium and Lead Acid.

Just to clarify, it’s Lithium ion batteries that are the ones periodically catching fire.

Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries are the ones campers and boating people are using, including myself.
I’ve four connected so I’ve ended up with 48V, I can run a 3000W inverter and use any electrical appliance I like even if I’m way out in the boon dogs.
The personal technology available today is outstanding. AW

Udo, you may like to put up the list of natural gas cars currently available overseas but not here….if not I’ll do it later …
so many brands and models available…..we are so far behind.
We have all the gas and yet no CNG cars.
Europe have just declared and proven that CNG cars are the most environmentally friendly due to production and emissions.
As well, they are cheap using normal engines with slight mods.
Bowen and Labor wants all gas gone and yet…??????
I can’t figure these guys out.

@Opti's Chanel 7 special was interesting @zen and @blackers. I haven't watched a tabloid news special for ages (Spotlight is the TV program that former producer Taylor Auerbach claimed footed the bill for cocaine and sex workers to jag a Bruce Lehrmann exclusive). ^ basically the special highlights the collapse of the relatively 'green' Australian nickel mining industry, due to Chinese mega industrial plants in Indonesia.. 'dirty nickel' they call it: daily deaths, slave wages, rainforest clearing, arsenic and mercury poisoned locals, slag and runoff pumped directly into waterways killing fisheries so there's nowhere to work except the factories. And eleven times the emissions of Australian nickel. I guess just research where the nickel comes from if you get one?

There's also concerns of the 'genocide' of Indigenous Hongana Manyawa forest people, of Halmahera island:
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/nov/26/uncontacted-hunter-gathere...

Here's @Opti's list, the Euro and American ones are caving to the financial pressure of using 'dirty nickel' to stay competitive with Chinese companies..

Tesla, Hyundai, Ford, Volkswagen, Jaguar, Weltmeister, PSA, SGMW. Audi, Daimler, Lucid, Honda, Kia, King Long, Dongfeng, GM.
Channel 7 cites 'Mighty Earth (data on likely supply chains from Rosa Luxembourg Institute, 2023)' as the source for the above list.

Righteo @opti, for fuck sake stop the bullshit about AU gas powered cars being cheap to run.

The average LPG gas price in Melbourne today is 0.96 a litre. Now given most gas cars use twice as much fuel as the equivalent petrol powered car per km driven +/- that works out at $1.92 per litre comparing the two fuel sources. Today unleaded’s average price is 1.70 per litre +/-.

So how are gas powered cars cheaper to drive?

^^ my comment above is based on previously owning 2 factory fitted (green rocker covered) LPG powered Ford Falcons and my father’s taxis.

Now if you are also thinking about the federal government removing the excise Hawke/Keating** introduced and increased by all governments since man up and say so but just for once stop the bullshit.

** my taxi driving dad was filthy on Hawke/Keating for this decision with the price going from just cents per litre to a price linked to petrol

So my argument about cost per km driven doesn’t apply? and infrastructure? Tax/excise?

My argument has been about the best cars for the environment …..you sorta missed that ……
….CNG cars are the best….production ….pollution etc etc
And where have you been… even LPG cars now only use 20% more gas than petrol making them your 96cents + 20% around $1.20 litre vs petrol .with the new systems…
You have the luxury in Melbourne of piped gas which can be pumped into an LNG car at home with the right gadget…..so it’s your home gas price to fill.
If the spud can supply east coast gas instead of flogging it all off to Asia and Europe to run their LNG cars we can not only cook a decent meal on a decent cooktop but run clean burning cars that last 30 years like they do now…
Bowen would have us using electric cook tops which won’t happen at my house.
I like to cook…..and any chef will say the same.

I had a ford wagon converted to gas , was also filthy when tax was increased . For all the incentives government gives on cheaper alternatives to then turn around and burn the public is just taking the piss . Why the fuck is diesel dearer than unleaded ? Edit …….spud won’t be doing the public any favours when it comes to gas , he knows where his bread is buttered .

Always prefer to cook with gas or coals on an open fire.

Blackers- Q4 E-tron. Loved it in the first 500 metres.

Lpg cars +20% — some evidence please @opti, it doesn’t make any sense what you are saying.

Piped gas and your Dutton “if” … so you want a completely new way of fueling (fossil) cars based on a “if” from a politician and all its inherent infrastructure (and lack of tax/excise) … good luck with that one.

Cooking …. Yeah, I’ve heard that argument before from my chief standard wife, we recently went to all electric and she loves it and how much cleaner the kitchen stays … and the health consequences are also huge for any family with asthmatics.

Your pushing it up hill there @opti

As I’ve talked about before, the beauty of gas engines whether CNG or LPG is that they can run on the future bio gases without any alteration….this is the same with cooking…..so it’s long term for the battlers.
Elon musk now admits that the future is not electric cars but hybrid electric with engines like Toyotas new combustion ones you will see soon….
…these have near zero emissions or actually if you factor production , well below world zero standards as they don’t require the critical minerals that are wreaking havoc on the environment.
Bowen thinks he is ahead of the game but is actually spouting old tech….he is behind.
Things have moved way ahead….and they are moving quick….
Did you know that it produces 4 tons of carbon to produce 1 single EV battery which in turn will take years to cover itself…..
Then you have to get rid of the toxic waste after it’s worn out ……currently 5% are being recycled…..10% in Australia….
We have gas, …gas is cheap if you keep it onshore….you can make cheap cars….
You can run them on bio gas as well….less than half the emissions of petrol and diesel…..infrastructure is as simple as placing a cylinder on the ground or piping it around.
NSW AUTOGAS is pure propane with the same emissions as your camp stove.
My point in all this is I’m disappointed that Labor are stuck in this electric dream.
It’s part of it but no where near all the solution people like Bowen think it is.
We have millions and millions of cars that can be converted right now if your really serious about saving the planet.,,,
The greens now want to charge 3 x the price for parking if you own an SUV….
It’s that kind of thinking that shows true colours…..most of those SUVs probably use the same amount of fuel as their cars.
Plant trees then plant some more…drive an efficient car….do your best to keep the place tidy…….things will improve naturally without the heavy hand….
…...now your cookin with gas.

Convert right now??
The big thing is gas burns hotter in your engine and it’s going to wear out your existing valve stem seals very quickly so again not as simple as you portray there @opti, so a second question to my first above ^^ which you haven’t answered yet … replacement cost of a blown engine when valves fuck up?

Plant trees - never counted by my tally would be in the 1,000s so great idea

You talking Stem Seals ...or Valve Seats ?

My father called them value stem seals from memory and he had to replace them and I think the top end, make sense?

@zen, good work, buggered I know how I managed to snare such a beautiful multi talented woman, batting way way above my average :))

Here's some new natural gas models....cheap to buy , long range, ...run them on aussie gas and we are set...
don't know why we don't import them and set up the network...people with gas at home could fill there with a wall mounted gadget.

I wonder if they can be converted to run on hydrogen?

Ive had two cars that ran on gas/petrol, but they always seemed to get issues even when i also ran them on petrol every week to stop everything drying out,(actually i think i might have even left one on petrol over night and swapped it over a few hundred metres down the road to gas)

But i guess brand new made cars made to run just on gas would be much different.

Not only was I impressed that Guy was married…but she actually feeds him….ha ha
That woman deserves the Victoria cross….
But yeah, just run petrol through every now and then for a bit to keep the valves happy…..the designated gas cars have different tougher valves etc.
I walk the walk and own one….Ive owned a few back in the day …falcon wagons Holden wagons lpg……these new systems I have now are no comparison.
I spent $3800 converting my all wheel drive SUV 2 years ago and it’s amazing on fuel and powerful at 110 octane because I am a bit of a hoon…..especially on dirt.
It does 10 litres per 100 k on petrol but now 12 on my advanced gas injection system so 20% more fuel but 70 c a litre cheaper…
I did it for the environment though and can move it across to my next car as well.
I like petrol cars and so gas for me was a responsible choice…
95% less particulate emissions and 30% less carbon.
My oil is always clean and the car runs faultlessly after the original remapping by a real pro.
I think it has a place with the rise of bio gases which will replace gas with no modifications….
There are many solutions to cleaner air and lots of petrol cars that can be cleaned up. I don’t know why govts don’t manage what’s already here . Millions won’t change to electric etc. ….and if all do and we get rid of gas cooking as well the grid won’t tolerate it.
Anyway they are my thoughts based on experience.
