Alright, time for some discussion on what yr all listening too. My iTunes inventory is getting a little stale so I'm up for some inspiration.

Currently loving The Drones' album "Havilah".. incredible songwriting and some of the best recorded guitars and drum I've heard in a long time. I'm a little late to the party with this album but it's on high rotation at the moment and will probably stay there a while. I've seen these guys live once (Fowlers, Adelaide) and fortunately they're incredible on stage too. Can't wait to see them again.

a shot from the nunnery backpackers, and footage from a rental we stayed at with these peeps, awesome folks, fascination with ben lee notwithstanding.
(one of the best things about the intertube is that low-fi is a thing.. love it, this is 3rd/4th-use vhs quality!)

It's such a good album, everything is perfect about it, the cover art, the album name and of course the songs especially these two and others like Fingers & toes, Sushi bowl, hole of blood maybe only the last few tracks fizzle out a little.

I like a lot of their other albums (the next three) but for me there is something about this albums sound and lyrics that just click.

play this at 1.5 speed!!! (we're a bit mellow and laconic in SA.. )
actually only for track 1, dial back to normal speed, or maybe 1.25 after the first track, haha)

This is also an Aussie classic, love these guys.

I use to go up town and see bands pretty much every second week, but these days i just cant be farked, the city drives me crazy.,

Missus just saw/told me Tumbleweed are playing in Melb in Jan too but i will probably skip both gigs, ive just seen them both enough times.

Will probably make the effort to go see Superchunk next month though, only seen them a few times and not since the 90s, at a good venue too.

yarp, I've got friends in balnarring, and in hastings and flinders, and they all feel the same way, I can only try to imagine how that jaunt would feel from where you are.. my mates in brunswick don't even rate the city.. 'what's there?' they say. why would you go into the city? funny how city adjacent people don't do the city.
probably you'd treat it like when I go to Melbs, like a city visit. you should do a couple nights like it's a holiday. epic fun when you do that, I have a place that @blackers recommended, where I get mussels at brunch, watch nice punk across the street. used to stay at tyrian apartments up brunswick st too, that's a nice spot, supermarket with a cheap coffee machine next door, good venues next to, and over in collingwood..

In the 90s i loved going into the city as it was the only place you could get good music or buy tickets for upcoming International band gigs. (like Dino Jr, Sonic Youth etc)

I had like this routine get off the train then first stop was always Aug-go go then onto places like Gaslight records, then catch the train out to Parahan to Greville street and Rare records, few other odd stops, even treat myself to a big mac for $2.45 (that was before my boycott Macas because it was a big business phase)

Same deal when i did east coast road trips id hit the city in Sydney just to go to Waterfront or Red Eye and in Brisbane, Rocking horse.

Now most(not all) of those record stores are gone, and you can get anything you want online new or second hand.

Kinda sad, it was always a real buzz going into all the record stores seeing what new stuff was out and searching through all the albums and often getting albums with bonus disc or signed copies, and getting all the street press.

Yeah we have done that before, getting an apartment or hotel room and staying down in the city for the weekend, missus loves it just for the Indo food.

Not a big Blue bottle Kiss fan, but they have a few decent songs worth throwing in spotify mixes.

very east coast @JF.. where are you based? I held a feller's head in a urinal telling him to be a nicer man at a 'sick of it all' gig around alternative nation time, 1995 the machine claims, brunswick st, maybe at the evelyn, (mr floppy at the punters club the following night), wasn't you that smashed a VB subbie on my head when i came out from the bog was it?

Love Toe to Toe JF. Had Threats and Facts on repeat for a good part of the mid 90s.
Was one of the Webber boys in the lineup if i remember.
Fark yeah up the Numbies Basesix.
Pretty much the first band i saw live as an underage grom. Still rate them as one of my all time favourite bands. Soft Cock, Patawalonga, Cocopops, etc. All time classics and a shame they didn't get 'discovered' because they should be the anthem to every surf flick ever made. So much energy and driving guitars.
Also got my nose smashed in by a pack of tuna fishermen from Pt Lincoln at one of their Adelaide Uni shows. My crime, being too pissed and trying to stand up for some chicks they were bashing about. Unfortunately my reflexes let me down that night! Lesson learnt. Legless fighting never pays. Was lucky though, due to the intoxication i happily stood in front of the mirror in the toilets and rearranged my nose back to how i thought it should look. A few crunches and cracks and given the circumstances, i think i got it pretty straight...til the next break(s). That was the only fighting one though.
But yeah the mighty Numbskulls. A staple of Adelaides punk scene in the 90s.
Got to play on their set for their final show...before they returned again.
And the Mark of Cain. Got to play on their set, for our first ever pub show w T.Es at the Crown in front of 1000 odd punters.
That was a little bit of a buzz for a grom.

Well Alright by Santana was a huge Surfie hit in Oz 1978 (tbb/twin sis/ crew Loved it!)
Only just realized it was earlier a super cool Live track for Blind Faith...(Brilliant)
Actually thinking to myself wow...how modern the composition was for 1969
Ok! So that's it...Love the song no matter...such a cool vibe

Well Alright (Original) is the B Side to Heartbeat by Buddy Holly.
The Song was never released on any early LPs

Wow! That's some shit hot B Side Track from 1958 (Far out ...that is a trip out!)
These gems that are buried in plain sight...gotta cue that!

Wow that's something Special...so far ahead of it's time...by an underhanded smooth operator!
Just how ya lay this song down on a B Side & Laugh it off...that earns buckets of cred! Far out dude!
Went thru all the covers...and all are winners...(Thought I had my fill then this cover stood out...)
Firstly coz it's by a chick...and this song would suit chix...very much so...love to hear that...
Then low & behold it's by 'The Crickets' the band behind the cool vibe...Drool!
Also check The Waylon Jennings / The Crickets for more experimentation from the band.

But tbb has more special reason to play this version...
Nanci doubles down on Double Southern Drawl...man is this a wild west treat.
Love everything about this track + The insane clear clean Crickets' sound is...so impossibly true!
Taken from (1996) Tribute LP 'Not Fade Away' Enjoy this rare double Tribute

This version is actually too good to be true...

Take note of the Upload date 11 Aug 2021 > Sadly Nanci died 13 Aug 2021
Says she died of natural causes...
That makes this a very special swansong indeed...this was a parting gift to the people!
Just looking at the counter & read the Stunning Comments...this was a tribute to true Fans!
Soon as ya hear it...that includes the crew...good as it gets...stoked to share this "Official Rarity"

at the risk of trying to avoid paperwork a bit too vigorously, and overstating 'what about me' lyrics (while ignoring that big black car shannon feller, half remember, don't want to, the show not the feller, particularly, noll, oops, remembering..) to illustrate an idealised version of Oz, (which I'm sure many didn't share!)

Dear @wax24,

I hope you enjoyed the above film-clip.

welcome to Australia. As you may have noticed, we don't over-dramatise video, based on lyrics and audio.

We also went through a phase of enjoying horrible 70s-joni-mitchell-bubble-bass sounds, but also saxophones and buskers.. we love coins (look up two-up when you get a chance.. maybe read 'wake in fright' too, @seeds sent you a wonky video of it once..)

But we also have a strong propensity to wear tiny shorts and skirts, and pork pie hats, in welfare queues, as you will have noticed.

I think you would enjoy our habit of placing timpani delicately outside all the delicatessens (the milk-bar/deli thing will absorb you for half an hour, in itself) and synch them up with midi-systems to sound like 3 toms on a drum-kit.

Oh, and we are all pretty girls, working in shops, reading 'Schoolgirls Weekly'.

All the best,

basesix.

(sax-wise, we very much enjoyed the Geordie feller's song to Local Hero, and also heroic sax anthems from the time.. I was of the Guru Josh gen, but yeh, the ennui/melancholic apartment rooftop sax passed us by, maybe some people did it in fitzroy for a beat in the 80s.. we do heroic.. bit of a shame probably)

Funny how you know songs but have no idea what band sings them.

Speaking of 80s bands my wife told me yesterday in the aged care facility she works, the Models lead singer/guitarist mother is staying so he regularly visits.

They had a few good songs, this one was on Blazing Boards
