Good Surf Coast waves Thursday morning, great swell early next week
Victoria Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Wednesday 31st August)
Best Days: Thursday Surf Coast, possibly both coasts Friday morning winds pedning, Surf Coast Sunday afternoon, Monday and Tuesday morning
Recap
A little slow going at first yesterday morning with the new S/SW groundswell being a touch delayed, but we saw strong and clean 3ft sets pushing into the Surf Coast through the day across the beaches, while the Mornington Peninsula hovered around the 4ft range.
Today the swell was a bit smaller but still there with inconsistent 2ft+ sets on the Surf Coast and 3ft waves to the east.
This week and weekend (Sep 1 - 4)
Remember: TODAY is your LAST CHANCE to win a trip for two to the Banyak Islands. More information here.
Our good pulse of inconsistent but long-period SW groundswell due tomorrow is tracking along, with infrequent 3-4ft sets due across the Surf Coast and 6ft sets on the Mornington Peninsula.
Conditions will be best through the morning with an offshore NW wind across the Surf Coast, giving into a shallow S/SW change around midday. In saying this the afternoon should still be fun on the Surf Coast.
Friday is looking a little dicey, with a light SE'ly due across both coasts, increasing through the day. There's an outside chance for variable breezes early, but keep an eye on local observations and the surfcams.
A slow drop in swell is due, easing from 3ft on the Surf Coast and 5ft on the Mornington Peninsula.
The surf should continue to drop through Saturday and again conditions are looking dicey with S/SW breezes across most spots, possibly variable early around Torquay.
Now our strong pulses of groundswell due from Sunday are still on track, with an upgrade in Monday's swell.
Firstly, Sunday's swell won't be too amazing, generated by a distant and weakening polar low generating a fetch of severe-gale pre-frontal W/NW winds, and post-frontal strong to gale-force W/SW winds.
Only small 2ft waves are due on the Surf Coast through the morning, 3-4ft on the Mornington Peninsula with a W/NW breeze.
Into the afternoon though an increase to 3ft is expected on the Surf Coast and 5-6ft on them Mornington Peninsula as winds hold from the W/NW.
Next week onwards (Sep 5 onwards)
Of greater importance is the development of two separate and much stronger polar lows south-west of WA later this week and through the weekend.
An initial fetch of severe-gale W/NW gales will set in motion an active sea state for a more elongated fetch of severe-gale W/NW winds to move over, generating a large and powerful W/SW groundswell for Monday, filling in through the day and peaking Monday evening.
The Surf Coast should build to a good 4-6ft through the afternoon on the Surf Coast and 8ft on the Mornington Peninsula, easing back from 3-5ft and 6-8ft respectively Tuesday morning.
Conditions will be great on the Surf Coast with offshore NW winds Monday and NW tending S/SW winds Tuesday. Lets have another look at this swell Friday though.
Comments
Shallow change for the surf coast.
Howling onny for the peninsula?
No light as well.
Spring has sprung. Suns out. Light winds. All the hallmarks of sea breeze. Could the shallow change be overuled here by a SE seabreeze? Hopefully.
do I smell a swell event???
Fridays forecaster notes headline: "Excellent waves Monday Tuesday, if in Melbourne bring all acquaintances who can float to Surf Coast"
Reality: 3-4ft WSW fat winkipop with 50 guys grovelling on their factory boards
Do not worry Superfish they will end up tackling the huge swells at Fisho's.
I'd love to actually know the percentage of 'Melbourne' surfers vs. 'local' surfers who'd be out on Monday....I reckon there'd be 20 locals for every 1 Melbourne blow in. 20 locals in 20 utes/tradie vans/expensive 4WDs (let's face it, heaps of the 'locals' now are just cashed up ex Melburnians) for every 1 Melbourne surfer.
The percentage of said 'locals' complaining of crowds, compared to 'Melbourne' surfers, on this forum would be 100% to 0% respectively.
Note 'Local' in this case could pretty much mean anyone within a 30km radius of the surf coast.
Don't forget the customary Torquay Automotive sticker Stok.
Seems like you've got your panties in a knot cause you haven't got a 'Torquay Auto Services' sticker on your car Wharfjunk. I'm sure if you dropped into their workshop in Beach Rd Torquay, Browny or one of the boys would be more than happy to give you one. You know, free advertising and all. Whack it on your back window and you'll blend in beautifully with all the 5 year 'locals' who love to display them with pride........quite often in tandem with those poxy little rectangular '3228' stickers.
No ringmaster far from it just parking at bells or Winki you would think every second vehicle is serviced by Browny and the boys.
As for the 5 year locals probably better for a chat than the depressing its not as good as it used to be lifelong locals.
Agree 100%, those who surf winki and complain are dumb ... I just complain and surf elsewhere haha
So most of them are blowins not locals.
Pretty much...a group of blow-ins who like to believe they're locals, and that it's Melbourne surfers who cause the crowds/hassle etc.
You say that like its a bad thing , Hako.
Might see you there.
I'll be getting changed next to my Volkswagon Transporter with So Fresh Ibiza blaring from the stereo at a volume that everyone can enjoy it whilst my retro lyfe Afghan blitzes around the car park pissing on the tyres of $50,000 tradies Utes.
Seems like we swing in similar circles, Blowin, although Gary is more of a Skitzmix man than So Fresh Ibiza.
I new you'd put your hand up for this one Blowin as you are an event specialist, if you put the title of this thread into google translator Swahili to English it comes out as "calling all Blowins".
I've actually been wondering when the Red Setter is to become trendy again.
I'm bringing them back in a big way.
Hard getting all that red hair out of the Velcro on my Webs though.
PS ...Event Specialist - got a nice ring to it .
Might have to add that to my business card.
"Webs" that took me a couple of hours to remember what they were, showing your age.
I was young enough to have a pair ( a gift ) and I wore them non -ironically for a surf or two.
The horror.
The horror.
Noice, just noice.
Heads up, tomorrow will be average now with SE winds due from dawn.
