Tiny, mostly onshore period
Southern Tasmania Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Monday 14th October)
Best Days: No great days, Sunday morning for the desperate, try the East Coast notes
Recap
Fun waves all weekend with a reinforcing S/SW swell Saturday, easing into Sunday morning back to 2ft. A new S/SW groundswell kicked through the day, but this has eased right back overnight leaving tiny waves into today.
This week and weekend (Oct 15 - 20)
With the S/SW swell from late last week and the weekend now on the way out, the outlook for the region is pretty slow going.
A positive Southern Annular Mode event is keeping the storm activity at polar latitudes but the activity from last week as settled down and we’ve got subdued, weak and not overly well aimed fronts due to move through our swell window.
Tomorrow will be tiny and a morning offshore will give into a change as a trough moves through, strong into the late afternoon and evening.
Swell wise there’s nothing expected in the wake of the trough, with onshore S/SE winds into Wednesday with a tiny, weak windswell.
Thursday will see winds swing around to the E/NE but with no decent size, just tiny offerings for beginners, if that, while another trough looks to bring onshore wind from dawn again Friday with a tiny mid-period SW swell.
Into the weekend we’ll see a touch more energy arriving out of the SW, generated by a weak polar frontal system developing south-east of the Heard Island region tomorrow. A weak fetch of W/NW-W/SW winds should produce a small, mid-period swell for later Saturday but more so Sunday coming in at 1-2ft across Clifton.
Winds will still be dicey and onshore Saturday but Sunday will hopefully see variable morning winds ahead of sea breezes.
Longer term there’s a good chance of a stronger polar front firing up in our medium-range swell window, generating a fun swell early next week, but more on this Wednesday. If looking for other surfing options try the East Coast Forecaster notes as there’s a bit more activity over that way.
