This week and weekend (Jan 19 - 24)
The weekend still looks void of any considerable swell, but our strong and distant low that's expected to bring a new long-period W/SW groundswell for Monday has been upgraded.
The low formed in our far swell window around the Heard Island region mid-week and is now pushing in from the south-west of WA.
It was forecast to weaken on approach but the models have it now holding its strength with a fetch of severe-gale W'ly winds persisting through our swell window right until it passes under us on Saturday evening.
We may see a tiny increase in W/SW windswell during Sunday ahead of the groundswell proper on Monday with Clifton now due to come in at an easy 3ft on Monday morning, if not for the odd bigger one.
Conditions are looking a little dicey with a variable W'ly wind likely tending W/NW early, ahead of S/SE sea breezes, while Tuesday will be great with a N/NW offshore and fading 2ft sets.
Small to tiny swells are due through the middle of the week, but into the end of the week we're likely to see an elongated and strong polar frontal progression moving slowly along the shelf. This should generate a good SW groundswell event from Friday through next weekend though winds look dicey. More on this Monday. Have a great weekend!
