Great waves Tuesday, new swell Thursday
Southern Tasmania Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Monday 26th June)
Best Days: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday morning, Saturday
Recap
Large surf Saturday with a big W/SW groundswell, mostly too west to provide epic waves in protected spots.
Sunday was great with offshore winds and easing surf from the 3ft range across Clifton.
Today a new SW swell due across the South Arm has come in under expectations with only 2ft waves reported. I was expecting 4ft but the front generating it over the weekend must have been a touch weaker than forecast on Friday.
This week and weekend (Jun 27 – Jul 2)
Today's swell has come in a little under-cooked, but a reinforcing pulse for tomorrow is still on track.
This is being generated by a secondary broad but not overly strong polar front, generating a fetch of strong W/SW winds through our south-western swell window last night and this morning.
We should see 3ft sets tomorrow morning across Clifton, easing off through the day, back to 1-2ft Wednesday. Conditions tomorrow are looking great with a light N/NW tending variable wind, similar Wednesday.
Into later Wednesday and more so Thursday a fun new W/SW groundswell is expected, generated by a strong polar front forming south of WA today. A fetch of severe-gale W/SW winds will be produced through our western swell window, with Clifton due to see 2ft to nearly 3ft sets Thursday morning.
A morning offshore wind should create clean conditions ahead of an afternoon W/SW change.
This change will be linked to a strong cold-outbreak in the Southern Ocean, with a patchy fetch of gales due to generate some new SW swell for Friday, mixed in with some S/SW windswell as the front pushes through.
We're likely to see messy surf in the 3ft range with gusty SW tending W/SW winds, much cleaner as the swell eases Saturday.
Longer term the storm track looks to push north and up into WA and SA, which isn't favourable for swell production in our region. Therefore make the most of the coming waves this period.
