Fun waves over the weekend with light winds, becoming small and flukey next week

South-east Queensland and Northern NSW Surf Forecast by Steve Shearer (issued Fri 9th June)

Forecast Summary (tl;dr)

  • Pulse of E/SE swell Fri, with a small fun signal of E/SE swell extending over the weekend
  • Light winds over the weekend
  • Small start to next week- just some small S swell for NENSW- with some S swell expected later in the week

Recap

Yesterday saw a nice day of SE swell to 2-3ft across most of the region under light winds with tended N’ly in the a’noon. Conditions are perfectly groomed today under W’ly winds with clean E/SE swell in the water, ranging from 3ft on the Sunshine Coast to 2-3ft south of the border.

Sunshine Coast beachies get the bikkies today

This weekend (June 10-11)

No change to the weekend f/cast with both days seeing plenty of small fun surf. Morning W winds should tend SW before dropping out and becoming light and variable in the a’noon in NENSW, light SE-E/SE in SEQLD. That will supply groomed conditions for a small but fun E/SE swell signal coming off the top of the North Island ( better aimed at targets to the North). Expect inconsistent 2-3ft surf through the day.

More of the same Sun- small E quadrant swells in the 2-3ft range, easing back into the 2ft range through the day. Winds should tend similar W’ly through the morning so conditions will be sublime if you can find a bank making sense of small E/SE swell. Winds are likely to tend light/mod SE-E/SEly through the a’noon.

Next week (June 12 onwards)

A quiet start to next week is still on the cards- in fact the whole of next week now looks fairly subdued as a complex low becomes slow moving and drives a mostly offshore flow up the Eastern Seaboard.

Long period swell generated by a low SW of Tasmania on the weekend looks flukey and better aimed up the Tasman Sea pipe but known S swell magnets in NENSW should see some 2ft sets with largely offshore winds and light a’noon seabreezes. Not much elsewhere, with minor levels of E swell in the 1-2ft range providing small, surfable beachies.

S swell eases back Tues with 2ft sets at S swell magnets in NENSW easing through the day, not much elsewhere other than some small leftover E/SE swell to 1-2ft and continuing offshore W’ly winds and light a’noon seabreezes.

Surf is expected to bottom out through Wed with tiny surf in the 1ft range across most of the region.

A front pushes across NSW Wed, with a fetch out of Bass Strait and SW winds developing in the corridor SE of the South Coast of NSW. Models have been flip-flopping on the strength of this system with resulting low confidence in size and timing but we’ll pencil in a modest a’noon increase in S swell Thurs to 2ft at S facing beaches in NENSW under a fresh W’ly flow and hopefully upgrade on Mon if it is warranted. Expect surf to stay tiny in SEQLD.

S swell is then expected to peak Fri in the 2-3ft range at S facing beaches in NENSW, 1-2ft at SEQLD S facing beaches with winds tending W/SW through the day as the system tracks through the Tasman.

Back to small and weak surf into next weekend under current modelling as a weak, blocking high sits in the Tasman and another complex low well south of the Bight becomes slow moving.

That offers some potential for S swell early week beginning 19/6 but thats a long way off so we’ll have t see how it’s shaping up on Mon.

Seeya then and have a great long weekend (NSW only)!

Was strange down here this morning.
Straight E/SE swell - mostly 2ft with some slow 3ft sets - but some beaches thumping with solid 3ft+ sets.

Normally with E/SE swells there's a flat distribution of wave heights across spots.

Nice conditions.

How big up there Sprout?

I'd say solid 3ft+ on the sets too, with the odd bigger one every now and then. Yesterday felt more 2-3. Similar in that other banks within sight weren't as big. Certain sand maximising the extra bit of period and other bits not perhaps. Great morning.

Nice, i screwed up and surfed the wrong spot. Broken beachy was really just all closeouts, thought it'd get better on the incoming tide but nope.
Ah well
