Eastern Tasmania Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Monday 22nd February)

Best Days: Tomorrow, Wednesday, Thursday morning

Features of the Forecast (tl;dr)

  • Good E/NE groundswell for tomorrow and Wed with morning W/SW winds ahead of N/NE sea breezes, easing Thu with N/NW tending fresher NW winds
  • Weak S'ly swell with S'ly winds building Fri, easing Sat as S'ly winds persist

Recap

A drop in N/NE swell Saturday but with cleaner conditions across selected spots, smaller Sunday morning but nice and clean. Some new trade-swell has filled in, replacing the windswell energy with less consistent, but good quality options across open beaches this morning.

This week and weekend (Feb 23 - 28)

We've got our better pulse of E/NE groundswell on the way for the state over the coming days, generated by a tropical low drifting south through the Tasman Sea while squeezing a high over New Zealand.

A great fetch of strong to gale-force E/NE winds have been projected through our swell window, and it's resulted in a large and on forecast pulse of swell for the southern NSW region through today.

We should see it arriving this evening, building towards a peak through tomorrow to around 4-5ft. It'll be a touch inconsistent but long-lined and great quality, easing slowly Wednesday from 3-5ft owing to a healthy fetch on the south-eastern flank of the low still being aimed towards us.

The surf will ease back Thursday from 2-3ft, tiny into Friday as a new S'ly swell develops, discussed further below.

Looking at the local winds and tomorrow should be great with a W/SW-SW offshore, giving into NE sea breezes, similar Wednesday but with stronger and earlier developing winds. Thursday should be clean all day with a N/NW tending fresh NW breeze, with a trough bringing S'ly winds Friday.

Now, this trough is due to form a weak low off our region Friday, kicking up a weak increase in localised S'ly swell, reaching 2-3ft, fading Saturday with persistent S'ly winds.

Longer term there's nothing significant on the cards so make the most of the coming days!
