This week and weekend (May 19 – 25)
We've got a couple of strong and good S'ly groundswell pulses due this week, all owing to a flurry of vigorous polar storms up past us as a strong node of the Long Wave Trough sits over the Tasman Sea.
Currently one of these systems is pushing up from below the state, generating a good fetch of gale to severe-gale SW winds which will swing more S/SW through tomorrow morning.
We should see a good S'ly groundswell building through tomorrow, with a secondary good pulse for Wednesday morning.
South facing beaches are due to start from a small base of around 2ft to maybe 3ft, kicking to 4-5ft later in the day, and then easing from 4-5ft+ Wednesday morning.
Winds won't be great tomorrow with a fresh and gusty W/SW tending SW breeze, but Wednesday looks great with W/NW tending W winds.
A low point in swell is due early Thursday but this will only be temporary as a severe low projects a fetch of severe-gale to storm-force SW winds from under the state up past us through Wednesday evening and Thursday morning.
We'll see a large long-period S'ly groundswell generated that's expected to kick very strongly Thursday afternoon to a good 6ft at south magnets by dark, easing from 4-5ft+ Friday morning.
Winds on Thursday look dicey with a W/SW tending SE breeze, but Friday will be excellent with W/NW tending variable winds as the swell eases.
The swell will continue to ease into Saturday ahead of another smaller long-period S'ly groundswell from another polar slightly smaller polar low.
The swell off this is due later Saturday but more so Sunday with good sets to 3ft to maybe 4ft at south swell magnets with N/NW offshore winds.
After this the outlook goes quiet, so make the most of the coming swells!
