Eco Challenge Gold Coast: Jesus was a carpenter...
...and he had a big long beard too - at least if the statues are to be believed.
So what happens if you combine a carpenter with a surfer? Well, you get a master craftsmen of wooden surfboards - presumably one with a big long beard.
If Jesus and his mates lived near a surf beach the stories written about him would have taken on a whole different theme. Instead of fishing boats the boys would have been designing stylish, beautifully crafted boards to frolic in the waves and pull into the pit deeper than each other.
Now by this statement I’m not saying by shaping or riding a wooden surfboard will get you closer to God, but I believe you’ll have a more spiritual experience than riding a craft made from dead sea creatures that have morphed into a toxic sludge.
OK, enough sacrilege...
The Eco Challenge is not a christian thing but it is happening this Sunday the 16th of March 2014, from 9am to 1pm at Tomewin St, Currumbin Beach. Its an event that will rock the surfing world, shattering the myth that surfing needs to be a toxic chemical ridden pursuit. The Eco Challenge will show just what a sustainable surfing can be, it's a searoots event, a partnership between Surfrider and Climate Wave Enterprises.
The Eco Challenge is a wooden surfboard expression session, open to all levels and abilities with a fleet of wooden boards on hand if you dont have your own to ride. In some ways the event came from discussions and encouragement from wooden surfboard innovators such as Grant Newby, Tom Wegener and Geoff Moase. After Grant’s successful Wooden Surfboard Day at Currumbin Alley all the local shapers and crew from Byron Bay up to the Sunshine Coast will be on the beach surfing and showing their wares for all to enjoy.
The team are interested in hearing from supporters who would like to align themselves with this event which will be following sustainable event management guidelines and practices. So if you like what you read please 'like' them on Facebook, and spread the love by sharing within your community.

If Jesus and his mates lived near the beach they would just stand around happy clapping each other and try and take 20% of everyone's income to maintain their Friday evening band.
Worst into to anything ever.
Why not just say surfboards made out of timber, come down and have some fun ?
Yeah, I don't know. Would've thought the worst intro to anything ever would be the one where no-one commented.
There's always that one grouchy uncle at every Christmas...
I think this idea is bloody good and overdue. And oddly coincidental given my brother-in-law was asking me if people make bamboo surfboards. I said yes, they've been around for a while but I reckon I've only ever seen a handful in use. I wonder if this is because, as sheeple, we don't want to try something new unless others have boldly gone where we won't go and shown us it can work and God/Allah/Cthulu forbid actually works better?
Shame I moved from surfing on the GC to Sydney 3 years ago otherwise I'd definitely head down for a looksee!
