"I'm not completely sure what we're doing out here. It's all an experiment and we dont know what the outcome will be."

So said Richard Tognetti, Artistic Director of the Australian Chamber Orchestra and one of the chief protagonists behind The Reef, the trend-bucking intersection of surfing, music and film held in the Australian desert last year.

Although the outcome of The Reef was unknown the ingredients weren't; an eclectic bunch of surfers – including Derek Hynd, Ryan Burch and Dane Beevor – assembled with classically trained musicians improvising before the camera of Jon Frank in a lonely desert outpost, the whole package produced for the screen by Mick Sowry.

Without storyboards or scripts they surfed and played music building upon each other's energy and inspiration. The finished product toured the capital cities and was recently awarded the Surf Culture Award at Surfing Australia's award night.

"I wouldn't have dreamed of this twenty years ago." said Tognetti, "Classical musical wrestling with surfing in the desert, performed in the Sydney Opera House...then an award from the surfing industry? It's a bit different to being booed off the stage at Bells in 1997."

The Reef is just about to embark on an East Coast tour playing in Wollongong tonight, Canberra tomorrow (Saturday), and Sydney on Monday. For more information or to buy tickets click here.
