Daly Head National Surf Reserve Dedication Weekend: Final Details
The Daly Head National Surfing Reserve commemoration weekend is only a couple of weeks away, so here are the final details about the ceremony and after party.
The ceremony will take place on Saturday the 12th of January at Daly Head and commence at 4pm, with speakers Professor Andy Short (representing National Surfing Reserves Australia), Mayor Ray Agnew as well as Quenten Agius, the last true descendant of the Adjahdura tribe.
From 5pm the festivities will move to Timperon's Farm which is located approximately 12km south of Corny Point on Marion Bay Rd.
Entertainment will involve local acts including Courtney Dobie, The Seeds as well as children's performers, Papa Dave the Clown, cultural performances, and guest DJ's SandyBunker & Jesus Egg Boy. From 10pm two of SA's hottest up and coming bands Headphone Piracy (high energy hip-hop/dance) and Urrtekk (psychedelic dance-rock).
There will also be an Art Exhibition featuring artwork from local and visiting surfers, memorabilia display featuring photos, posters, maps and the like and a surfboard display of surfboards through the eras.
Tim Bonython and Christo Reid will provide a variety of local and SA film footage while there will also be a 'Vehicles Through the Ages' Display. Food will be available including vegetarian options - yiros, felafel, snags, curries and cakes with soft drinks also available, but you'll need to Bring Your Own alcoholic drinks. Tshirts ($10) and a Histrical Book ($20) will also be on sale.
The event will be family friendly with a $10 donation (kids free) to cover costs of the event and raise funds for future Coastcare coastal protection activities. On site camping is available but please notify the organisers through this email: [email protected] It should be a great weekend and members of the public with an interest in the Daly Head region are also welcome.

Surfed Chi's with Shaun Dedrick, guitarist with Headphone Piracy last week. They have recently morphed their old band Poetikool Justice into the new outfit and are working on a set for the party that should have the old shearing shed shaking.
Hopefully this westerly storm track that's predicted to develop towards the end of next week will hang in there so we have some swell for the weekend too. Would love to see the dedication ceremony go off with big Daly's firing in the background!
it's gonna rock!... whats the chances of getting a sesh out at SH to myself if its on?? Hopefully everyone will roll up at 3pm... hahahaha
Holy shit - next weekend is looking bonafide epic at Yorkes. 5-6ft Pondi and 8-10ft Daly's with offshore winds. If only there was a way we could move this swell to the following weekend for the Dedication Weekend!
Gonna be a tough call - fair bit of time and petty money to go over 2 weekends in a row. Alright for the locals tho. What a choice - go the weekend before when it's pumping or go the weekend after when it could be flat?
All is looking good for the party and dedication, T-shirts are $20 for adults and $15 for kids but very limited numbers. The book produced by Christo is going to be a collectors item, Quenten Ages is leading a cultural tour of Dalys prior to ceremony, numbers are very limited and if your keen to come along email ([email protected]) and we wil try and fit you in. Tour will depart dustbowl car park at 2.30pm so get there a little earlier if your keen to meet Quenten personally. Cost of tour will be approx $10 (cheap as!!!) and will Finnish just before ceremony starts. If you can't make the ceremony be sure to come along to the after party which promises to be great.
yeah, great... but what about t-shirts and books for all!! Every thing very limited? I reckon you organising guys maybe underestimating the numbers that could roll up... been such a special place to many of us for such a long time... been driving down there a longtime!! (I want a book and t-shirt... or there'll be a riot!! haha)
Don't fret DLT we have more than enough books printed and won't run out of them. There's 120 teeshirts so the numbers there are slightly limited for the party. As we'd had to put the money up for everything we had to limit them as we weren't sure how many we would sell. Hopefully everyone who wants one can get one and if demand exists we will get more made up. See you all next weekend!
haha... fret... sure thing. Hey YS, you organising guys sound like you are doing an amazing job down there to make this onehelluva weekend... Just had a surf at Pidds, lovely SE lumpy washingmachine crud... can just imagine how Dalys or Dustbowls is looking at the moment...
Hi guys, just keep in mind this whole process has been organised and funded by volunteers with a passion for seeing Daly Head preserved for future generations. We have no idea how many people are going to turn up and help celebrate with us. Bring along a few personal extras and don't be afraid to share or volunteer so someone else can have a good time to!! As YS pointed out, t shirts are limited but more can be ordered, we will have a list if you missed out on your size, and can do a reprint of the book if necessary. It's cost us a lot to put this project together and if we live up to our reputation of putting on a good show (pretty sure we have that covered!) all who donated will get there money back and every cent of profit FBEAG make, if any? will be going straight back into future projects in the area. Most of all bring along a positive attitude, a smile, be friendly, lend a hand. If everyone does that it promises to be the best gathering / good times of like minded people that love the natural beauty and stoke this unique part of S.A can and has ever delivered!!! Bring it on I say!!!
Looks like there will be waves on the weekend after all! SE winds and a medium swell. That should make a few options and spread the crowd out a bit. Even Daly's should have some fun ones Saturday arvo while we are unveiling the plaque! Stoked;-)
Yeah, nothing special but a small to medium sized W/SW swell and SE winds is all we need to get a few spots going. Looking to be a great weekend!
hope all have a great weekend on the peninsula ,are you likely to get any swell ?
Yeah Victor, a fun W/SW swell for tomorrow afternoon, probably 3ft Pondi and Daly's with S/SE winds. Not going to make it over?
The party went off last night and a good time was had by all!
Team Swellnet scored some decent waves late arvo at Lizards after the plaque dedication ceremony and seemed to be stoked.
Tim Boynton's home movies from the 70's and 80's were unreal and the band's and performer's had the place jumping.
Its now raining so even the weather gods showed mercy and held off until after it was wrapped up so we are feeling fortunate!
Thanks to all who attended and hope you all enjoyed yourselves!
ok, got home, dont ask me how... felt like I was sleepdriving. I just want to congratulate all the organisers and performers and the local crew down there... what a gig!!! The cultural tour, the great unveiling, the shed, the sandmans... you couldnt have added anything else. And thanks to all the people who kept me well plied into the night... and put up with me haha... especially the guy with the Heinekin mini-keg! anyway, time for a quiet one to iron out all the creases!! Well done Yorkes mob!! HD+
We're currently sitting in the Cooper's bar at Adelaide airport downing the last beer before the flight back to Sydney. What an incredible night it was! We've been trading tales all day, also scored another sly and uncrowned session before the drive back. Had so many great conversations - was good to finally meet you Yorke Surfer. Like to say thanks for the hospitality and special thanks to all who organised it: Ed, Reid, Wayne (that board collection!), Miff, everyone involved. It was an awesome community event.
What an unreal weekend! Scored great waves Thursday and Saturday, even Sunday morning was half-decent before we headed back to Adelaide. Really enjoyed Quentin's guided tour of the Dust Hole/Rockpools/Salmon Hole region, and as for Saturday night's festivities - well, let's just say Sunday morning's shocking hangover was well worth it. Great to meet lots of new faces as well as catch up with a lot of old friends too. Congratulations to the FBEAG and everyone else who made the event a huge success.
Great weekend, great waves, great people and just an awesome community event. It was good to put so many faces to names and I gotta tell ya, the surfing community hasn't changed much at all in the past 5 years, just the same crew, a little older but with a few new groms in the mix.
Thanks Ed, Reid and everyone else who put so much effort into this event and I'll catchya all in the water again soon!
Yew!!! Yorkes was pumping yesterday - Pondie, SH and even BD's had some smoking waves. SH mid afternoon was solid - bigger than the swell charts indicated. Epic day!!
@maddog, what size was SH, was dalys towed ?
Calling a size is a bit hard seeing as everyone calls everything different but most sets were breaking off the boils and every 20mins or so a 3 wave set would almost close out the bay. Not sure if it was like this all day but it was between 1-4pm. I'm calling it 3-5ft with bigger sets. Tide was pushing in then with high around 5pm so there was heaps of water coming in. Billy (think that is his name) was out there on his 9ft mal and his entire board fit on the face easily when he took the drop on the biggest ones.
Na Daly's wasn't towed - there were 3 lads out there paddling. Checked it about 5.30pm. Wasn't that big then surprisingly (think swell angle had shifted a bit south by then which is why SH was picking up a lot of swell) although I'm not sure we saw the biggest sets. BD's had the odd 2-3 footer when we checked it after. Looked to me around 5-6ft (double overhead on takeoff) and clean as a whistle so good for paddling.
Sounds very nice Maddog! Wish we could of hung around for that swell.. even this morning would of still been pumping!
Im thinking ex-tropical cyclone Narelle might have pumped the swell up a bit here yesterday? What do you think Craig? It certainly pumped here. Managed a few surfs even with my dicky knee!
Mark Matthews was surfing 10 foot Westcape with Jarred and Clayton Howse. Mark was paddling in with a waterproof camera phone between his teeth and taken pictures of himself inside huge barrels!!
Hi Yorkes, yesterday's and today's swell actually had nothing to do with Narelle.
It was generated by a real strong and slow moving polar frontal progression moving in from a position east of Heard Island through the weekend and into early this week.
Ex-TC Narelle was just a weak trough when it moved below WA yesterday and it's now SSW of SA, but it will 'bomb' (drop in central pressure by 24hPa in less than 24hrs) to the south of Tassie tomorrow and generate a large swell for the West facing coasts of New Zealand.
Glad you got a surf in, I knew you wouldn't be able to resist this one!
