Episode 2 - La Nina Lapping it up in Hawaii
It's lunchtime here in Hawaii and for the first time in the Vans Triple Crown 28 year history there hasn't been one day of iconic winter surf, typical to this time of year, for the O'Neill Sunset Comp. Yikes! Everyone's blaming La Niña, a naturally occuring ocean-atmosphere condition that affects weather patterns responsible for the formation of Hawaii's winter surf.
And with only two days of swell predicted from now until Dec 6 it looks like the comp will be played out on Wednesday Dec 1 and Thursday Dec 2, with heats running simultaneously, west of Sunset at Kammies and the shallow reef inside Sunset main break - Val's reef.
Although the pro's must be getting a little edgy, all dressed up and nowhere to go, they're the first people to understand the unpredictable nature of surfing... and with the good comes the bad. And so the North Shore sits and waits. Hopefully the swell that comes through will be enough to set the comp on fire.
